I went to the game at the sty all those years ago as a 26 year old.
I am now 72 and still hearing about this being a big thing in their history and that we have never avenged it.
They won 4-0 on their ground and yet we have won 4-2 and 3-0 at the sty over the last few years and they pass it off as "it doesn't count" even though our 3-0 earlier this season is the biggest away win in Sheffield derby history.
What's wrong with these people? Why are they clinging on to this nonsense? Do they not realise how ridiculous they sound?
Baffling.

It’s very sad that all they have left to cling onto is the distant memory of a game played over 46 years ago at the 3rd level. Only 28 years previously we’d beaten them 7-3. I’m 55 now and I only have a vague recollection of the game and I only went to my first Blades game a month after it was played.
They talk of it in terms of achievement but our 3-1 win in 1992 on Bobby Davison night and the 4-2 Bouncing Day massacre are actually bigger achievements as they were supposed to thrash us in both those games and they were played at a higher level and at their place. I think they have won once at Bramall Lane since the 1960’s.

Fact is they're a fanbase of people who live in the past. They had their glory days in the early 90's...to be fair they were close to becoming part of the "big six" that now dominate football. But they didn't. They lost the cup final after beating us in the semi and they've done fuck all since then.

But to your average pig fan...it's still 1993. They've got some sort of collective amnesia where they just forget/refuse to acknowledge the last 30 years. In their minds they're still a top 6 team who have been cruelly mistreated. It's like how they forget how they were all desperately queueing up to fellate Chansiri when he bought them. None of that "counts" in their minds, because they are so massive.

Fuck 'em. They got relegated at the lane. That will stay in the history books forever.

It doesn’t help that we sing about the BDM. Personally I’ve never understood why we as a fanbase sing about a defeat by them and it does endorse their view that it matters to us. We should just not bother. It was decades ago and to many United fans either a distant memory or something that they don’t even know about because they weren’t born.

I was there on the day and can't believe that we sing about it.
We are making it relevant for them.

Was also at the game walk back through hillsborough park after the game was fun
Wendy fans live in the past it’s all they have as derfblade says we have more than avenged it and today will be in the history books forever and they will hate it
I had to laugh, reading BBC Sport comments, 1 Wednesday fan had the temerity to advise a Derby fan "to move on, get over it and live in the now"...

Don't waste your time trying to understand the mentality of the average pig fan 99% of them are deranged and must live in a parallel universe, I mean at least one of them thinks they are a global presence 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

To be fair, we’re quite petty about this too, and fall into their narrative. The 4-0 in 1979 was a trouncing - fair play. We’d go on about it if it was us. But it’s how we’d go on about it that’s the difference.

3-1 (Davison), 4-2 (Bouncing), 3-0 (bwahaha) and Relegation in February Day (even bwahahahahaha-er) don’t individually ‘avenge’ the 0-4. But so what?

The thing is, if we were as lowly as they are now, we’d be pissed off, and demanding that we get back to the levels we were at when we won the above games. We wouldn’t just talk about them as though everything was alright.

The difference between the fans is that Wednesday look to one-off achievements (BDM and Rumbelow’s Cup) and somehow think that those isolated things make them permanently massive. It breeds a weird complacent mentality where they settle for being utterly shit.

Yeh , we need to change the last line of that song ,
Why do we keep reminding them of a time when they thrashed us and crashed our promotion campaign , only to get promotion themselves ?

This season is the 75th anniversary of us beating them 7-3. The biggest-ever Sheffield derby win. I only realised when I checked the date. We haven't celebrated it at all. No anniversary dinner, nothing. They continue harping on about Boxing Day today, constantly referencing it and singing about it as though it was the biggest derby win in Sheffield football history. It wasn't. Back in the 50's we matched their four-goal BD win and scored more.

There were 28 years between our 7-3 and their 4-0. Nearly half a century has passed since BD.

As a person of a mature age , please could you refrain from using profanities - there are many people on here that will take this as a right of passage to use even worse language.

I was also there for that game and it's shocking that the birthplace of football should ever have reached the pub league level. It's incredible that both teams could attract nearly 100,000 for 3rd division matches then and one of them still being singing about it 55years later.

Boxing Day 1979, I had a lot more to worry about than a football game our first child had just been born, and the father-in-law was dying in agony with cancer, he passed on New Year's Eve. I probably couldn't even name half the team, it is a lifetime away as far as I'm concerned.

Had to have a little chuckle when I read this. One thing thrown at us from your supporters are your wins in the 1st division and the FA cup wins. They are all over 100 years ago now.

Mate have a day off.

No disrespect but Coventry dont register with Blades, no rivalry at all.

I would imagine it's because it's literally the only thing we can remember about Coventry

This is exactly the point for me. This is why it is so laughable. We actually hold the record for the biggest derby win. 7-3 trumps 4-0. Not to mention the most relevant stat of all which is all the head to head games played recently - ie our own living memory and history, not that of our grandads!

We all know that the pigs like to live a parallel universe though - they are evening claiming that yesterday was some sort of moral victory cos they didn't get thrashed!

🤣 🤣 🤣 bizarre as fuck them grunters!

As I’ve already mentioned on the pig thread, they equalised our massacre in 1951, not the other way around 🙂

Mate, I don't mind opposition fans coming on here and having a bit of banter - but this makes you look like you really want to be relevant. This is not a Cov thing, it's a Sheffield derby thread.

Yeah we’re well aware of that, we often refer to it as “two bald men fighting over a comb” 🙂
