However we have to put some perspective on it. Tactically and regards substitutions Wilder is far better than Seles.
In fact Seles in-game substitution and tactics were so bad lacking logic you could only conclude he wanted to be sacked for the pay-off.

Agreed i thought he was only in for he money.when he said he doasnt feel pressure thats not a normal reaction to the question.
He got the Southampton (tempory)
job and did nothing although he couldnt be blamed for there relegation .Must have thought this is easy money and no doubt this is how it looks.
His latest job will probably decide his future ! failure and coaching is probably his best bet if he stays in the game.
When he got the job he looked like a man who had been to college and got some nous about him.
 
I believe the sacking of Wilder and his return were all part of a carefully formulated plan in order to manage expectations and thus lower the pressure of expectation on Wilder and SUFC.
Following the much prophesied play off final defeat our supreme owners calculated that a dreadful start - with a new manger - would take care of future expectations.
The first part of the plan worked - maybe even better than they calculated, and now we can see the second part of the plan coming to fruition. This will involve a steady - but unspectacular - rise up the table, ensuring that we just, but only just, scrape into the final play off place.
Achieved in this manner 6th would ensure that expectations don't rise too much.
Then, as complete underdogs we easily win the semis and final, thus ensuring our permanent and rightful Premier League status.
Bravo our owners. Pure Genius and God Bless America.

Last season there were 2 standout teams, Leeds and Burnley. We ground our wins but were overall average.
This season only Coventry look standout
Apart from that the league is more or less the same as last season.

Outside of Coventry, who have similarities to Leeds last year in that they don't seem to worry about defending and just outscore everybody - I'm yet to be convinced there are any solid "good" teams in this division. Watford may be 15th but only a few weeks ago battered Boro 3-0. Hull beat Stoke yet lost to QPR a week earlier and yet sit 7th. Any side that can put a consistent run of results together has a chance this year.
 
As ever, when a lead is tight and competitive, football fans call the league poor, with no good teams. The opposite is just as likely.

Due to premier league squads being bigger I don't see anywhere near the quality loans of 5 years ago and a lack of top talent in the league too

I think almost every player in this line up would be clear standouts in this league now. We came second this season

 
Happy for the optimism. I'd still say that second half is enough for us all to calm down though.
 
The next four games will be crucial. If we get at least 9-10 points out of those then I'd say we're back in the mix. The league is very inconsistent which helps to make up ground relatively quickly.
We can't be inconsistent now though. We don't have that luxury anymore.

Yes, but... That's nearly 7 years ago.

Jack Grealish is the oldest outfield player in that XI and was 23 that season.

It will be very easy to make a competitive Premier League side in 7 years time using 11 teenagers from this season

None of those players were what they are now, back then. Who knows where Ollie Arblaster, Divin Mubama, Hayden Hackney, Jeremy Monga or Mihailo Ivanovich will be in a few years?

That XI is incredible though, mostly fuelled by a generation of brilliant English talent. That is unlikely to repeat itself regularly tbf.

With the way that academies operate these days and seeing the quality of some of the teenagers in and around PL squads I would say its likely to become the norm.
 
6th place was 66 points last season. That was a huge outlier. It's currently tracking at 74 points for 6th.

United would need 2 points a game over the last 28 games to get to 75. Not a chance
 
The Championship has been getting steadily worse for about 7-8 years certainly post Covid..

The least really strong Championship, by that I mean with 8-10 good teams, in it was the bouncing day season.. the following season when we went up it was 6 or 7 really good sides.. after that it’s been 3 or 4 good teams a season at most

Not sure how you worked that out. After 18 games last season 4th had 33 pts, 5th & 6th 30 pts, 7th 28 pts. This year is 30, 30, 29, 28
 
There are 28 games left, realistically we would need to win at least 17 of them and pick up a few draws so that would mean losing no more than another 6-8 games, can't see it happening

Catching up 11 points (or however many it is now the weekend's fixtures are complete) over 28 games isn't the issue.

There are SIXTEEN teams ahead of us in the hypothetical race for 2nd and that traffic is the issue.

Example, Bristol City only need 39 points from 28 games to match what they did last season, which was good enough for the last playoff spot.

For us to emulate that points total (68), we'd need 49 from 28 which translates to an 80 point season overall.

Every further point above 38 they gain, our task gets pushed to the edge of reality. If they did 49 from 28 - not a crazy target for a team already in 6th - we'd need title-winning equivalent form above 2 pts per game to catch them.

The point is that even when you consider all that, there are still 4 teams better placed than Bristol City in the race for 2nd. And another 12 between us and them.

If we were 7th and 11 pts off, we'd talk about giving it our best shot and if teams take points off each other then who knows.

I'm still wishing for it, mind. It's the hope etc etc

Leeds struggles this season shows how wide the gap is and is getting wider.
Sunderland did some great business in the summer ! The promoted team is history,we knew they were far from good enough! Scouts have done a great job.
Leeds have not strenghthened that much and its clear they arnt good enough,a big window for them coming up..

As you say, traffic is as much the issue as points and as teams play each other they can’t both lose.

That said 28 matches is enough to get past if you had promotion form from here.

Need something like a ten game streak.

All the fixtures until year end are winnable if we’re ruthless but it’s about consistency.
 
still think we will finish mid table but its not impossible to get in to the top 6 this season apart from coventry its a very mediocre league imo it will depend on what happens in january get rid of selles loans and bring 3/4 top loans in

but back in 2019, nobody was saying White, Bellingham, Tomori, Henry, Martinez were going to be top ballers back then.
 
Way too early for this kind of chat. It was only 4 games ago when some were claiming we were doomed and that was ridiculously premature as well.
Do people just like to be dramatic online or something?
