BBC SPORT said:
As well as opposing players and managers, the mindset of referees has been changed by Ferguson's absence from the touchline, according to Neil Warnock.

The former Notts County, Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers boss pitted his wits against Ferguson on several occasions, and believes opposing teams are starting to receive more favourable decisions from officials.

Moyes claimed it was "scandalous" that United were not awarded a late penalty when Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris slid out to challenge Ashley Young in last week's 2-1 home defeat by Tottenham.

"At the moment we are seeing decisions going against Manchester United - which is unusual because they have had so many going their way in the last few years," Warnock told BBC Sport.

"Sir Alex being on the touchline must have been a factor."

Warnock's Sheffield United side were denied a penalty at Old Trafford in April 2007 on their way to a 2-0 defeat. A month later, the Blades were relegated from the Premier League with their goal difference one worse than nearest rivals Wigan.

"Our striker Luton Shelton got pulled down by [United defender] Gabriel Heinze and it was a penalty and a sending-off," claimed Warnock. "But [referee] Rob Styles gave nothing.

"Afterwards I said to Sir Alex: 'How did he not get sent off for that?' He replied: 'It's Old Trafford.' It was an intimidating place."

I was at that match but I can never remember anything about the Shelton incident. I do remember Tonge hitting the bar though.

He wasn't pulled down as Warnock says, he had his legs taken, clear penalty.

An ugly tackle through the back of him too. It's a booking anywhere on the pitch barring the home penalty area (where it should have been red).

The Shelton incident is the only thing I remember from that game. He'd caused a few problems that half, tore past the sluggish Heinze, who chopped him down in the area. One of the clearest penalties I've seen us denied. I was raging then - I'm still angry thinking back to me now. Styles had a perfect view and didn't give it. Yet somehow he was able to give a penalty against "the Sheffield defender" for "intent to foul Stephen Gerrard" in our first game. What a bastard.

Warnock is spot on and one of the very few pundits with the insight and balls to say it. Ferguson's influence over referees from the dugout was worth a good few points a season for Man.U.

Which ref with any ambition would willingly upset Sir Alex and scupper their chances of getting a Cup Final or Title deciders?

Rob Styles, whiter than the driven snow, a more honest official you couldn't wish to meet---
What's that nurse? Don't you dare to speak to me, Napoleon like, that.

When incidents like that are recalled you cannot help but think someone somewhere is out there to fuck us over anytime when look like having a glimpse of success.

The so called Gerrard penalty is the biggest bullshit decision I have ever seen. Never seen a penalty given for "intent to foul" before or since.

Ref's really do seem to rewrite the rules when it comes to our matches.

I also remember Rooney flicking us the 'V' in that game after a few raucous renditions of 'You fat bastard' and 'You let your country down', but nothing was made of that either.

...and who can forget Tom Cowan at West Ham in the early 90s ? a diving defensive header to clear a ball into the box gets Wet Sham a penalty in the dying minutes. Incredible.

To redress the balance a bit...

Am I the only person who remembers an incident towards the end of the game v Millwall at the Lane on 4/2/84 when we were winning 1-0 and a Millwall player broke into the box at the Kop end and was literally wrestled to the ground by Joe Bolton? I have never seen a clearer pen, but nothing was given and we went up the other end and Arnott scored to give us a 2-0 win.

Yes, I am probably the only person who recalls that....

And Peschisolido bing offside (twice) in the League Cup QF against Palace....

Nevertheless, the decisions against us in the PL (and for other teams, like WHU) were extremely weighted against us.

It still angers me thinking about that penalty decision. As it does the Gerrard pen at The Lane and the Kozluk equaliser that was ruled out at Upton Park.

I do forget about decisions that go our way pretty quickly though :)

Doesn't matter, it was all warnocks fault for not playing 2 up front cost us 3 points against the best club side in world football

See the things about teh penalty at OT is, had we been given it, and scored, I'll wager we may very well still have lost, but Heinze would have been suspended for Man U's next game (which they draw with boro). Who is to say that they wouldn`t have lost that in that case, meaning they needed something out of teh WHU game on the last day...

Small things can make a big difference...

If we'd lost by one goal less we would have stayed up.

But then you could also say that Man Utd were coasting after they went 2-0 on 50 mins and not really making much effort to increase their lead. Had we pulled it back to 2-1, who's to say they wouldn't have upped a gear to restore their 2 goal advantage?

You could also say we would have had momentum and a chance to get the equaliser against ten men.

Good. Crowds abusing on a mass scale then feigning upset at the slightest dig back is proper mardy.

I wholeheartedly agree. Just thought it was a little odd it wasn't picked up on. Especially as it was in front of the sky cameras.

Wilshere got a two match ban for doing the same thing the other week.

True. It's all in the realms of speculation.

What we can say for definite is that if WHU had been properly punished for their admitted cheating we wouldn't have gone down :-(

That isnt the only reason we went down, we should have had enough so it didnt matter but when a team cleatly cheats week in and week out yet dont get punished for it then that pisses people off.

Perhaps their training in someway emulates that used by the Metropolitan Police?:)

It was that bleeding black and white striped away kit. Feel free to correct me Stato's, but I believe we never won a single game in it.

Wigan watford and newcastle. the only away wins we had. all in the glorious red and white stripes and all 1-0. I think the only point we got in that kit was away at Charlton

The two penalty misses against Blackburn
Crazy nine minutes after half time at Fratton Park when we let two goals in
Dropping two points against Everton when Paddy gace away a daft penalty
dropping two points late on against Newcastle (Claude Davis with a weak back pass I think)
Missing a Penalty against Chelsea.

We had a lot of bad luck that season, but we also caused a fair few problems ourselves. No point dwelling though eh? Keep the faith :)
