Never fear, K-Mac's replacement is still available for nowt!

Shite by his own standards, Swiss, but so were many others in a squad low in morale and lacking direction.

Kevin McDonald is the best player in League One and would walk into probably 50-60% of championship midfields.

DAVID WEIR on KMac situation:

Is there any chance at all someone could transcribe it? Can't get audio where I am atm! :(

He sounds resigned to losing him, saying things like, 'still a lot to sort' and 'still a Sheff Utd player' but the fact he's gone for talks and the disappointment in DW's voice tells you all you need to know really.

An integral part of the team and key to the way we're trying to play. God awful timing but just goes to show once again where we are as a club at the moment.

Not fully transcribed but the jist is ( For those who cannot listen to audioboo):

DW: Kevin has gone to speak to Wolves today, we will have to see what happens.
It will be a blow but we will see if he goes , what we can do after.

RS: Is there a possibility you could persuade KM to stay?
DW: ( emm... well.... awkward pause with awkward noises made) continues to say in balance , have to see what happens today etc

RS: Is he included in match day squad?
DW: depends what happens today

RS: Do you have a like for like replacement:
DW: Don't know if we have a like for like but we have other good players of who we can play in different positions, we will never be a one man team.

RS: does this show again how a club in league one with parachute payments will have financial advantage:
DW Yes money talks.

DW final comments: good team unit, we have good players now and will have good players in the future

Reactions: Dec
Not sure I heard disappointment in his voice, more like resignation and the fact that he knew things like this might happen when he took the job.

I have heard that there was unrest in the dressing room last season and Macca was in the middle of it. Not going any further than that but if true then I can sort of understand why they have accepted a bid.
BUT FROM WOLVES? FFS why oh why. (unless SUFC have once again fucked up negotiating contracts - Jags & Kenny spring to mind)

Extremely pissed off.

Easily our best footballer, young, can control the ball at pace and pass it well. He wasn't brilliant last year, but you can see by watching him, that he is a proper player, a class above in this division, and pivotal to this team and system.

Why we can't just say no is beyond me (well it isn't really i suppose...), it simply seems we get any offer and the player is on his way. Agree with those saying it'd have been better to accept something for Long or Maguire, both of whom are replaceable. McDonald's skills are something we don't have anywhere else in the squad.

This is a much worse decision than Blackman.

This is a much worse decision than Blackman.

Blows it out of the water. Last season I defended the decision to sell Blackman - Higher league etc etc but this is lunacy IF the club were in a position to refuse. By that I mean if a release clause has been triggered... A la Jags and Kenny.

Once again the Blades do what the Blades do best. Sell their better players but this is worse. Wolves are one of our rivals for promotion.

Talk about popping the feel good factor from last Friday (I do not include the League Cup as I dont care)

And here's more from Staton: Understand Wolves triggered a clause in Kevin McDonald's contract, leading to the accepted bid and subsequent medical today.

We really need to improve our contract negotiation. Nobody at this level should be on the books with a clause enabling them to speak to a club from the same division. What the hell were we thinking of when we made that deal?

Wolves are one of our rivals for promotion.

This is the main thing for me, Not that they may have sold him but more of who they are selling to.

If he gets wolves promoted at our expense just how much will that cost us?
Not good business at all

What a desperately sad time to be a blade , the people running the club wont even allow us hope any more before they pull the promotion rug out from under us
Serves us right for briefly being optimistic

That would explain Weir's comment about having to let him go to talk to them. Doesn't make it any better to take though.

From Beeb:
"Obviously we're aware of the situation with Kevin going to speak to them. We couldn't really stop that," Weir said.

Good players will always get special clauses in their contracts otherwise they would not stay with a League 1 club. Still disappointing and will take time to re-build the team to accommodate a different player.

Would he really have not signed if the clause had said "applicable within League 1, we will accept bids from any club from a higher division that offers 750k"?

We should be ringing every Championship club now telling them he's available for £750k (or whatever it is) - even the pigs. The club need to do everything in the little bit of power they have to make sure he doesn't sign for Wolves.

Makes you wonder whether the Coady deal was for exactly this reason. Get us through to January where we can either extend Coady's deal or look at bringing someone in.

Now thats a plan

I suspect his situation will have been well known within the game anyway, these things usually are. Presumably, people were looking at last season and weren't interested but Friday will have reminded one or two what he can do I suppose.

Maybe that Diego kid can fill the void, its a hell of a gamble though.

What a f'kin joke we are

Who insisted on the clause in his contract?

The player?
The agent?
or
Kevin McCabe?

If it moves sell it!

Maybe he can, maybe he can't. But I don't think he's even training properly as yet!

I know, thats why it would be such a big gamble, gambling on him even being fit by Xmas and then gambling that he could even fill the position.

Build a team around your best players is what most teams aim to do......shocking decision!

Indeed. May explain why after interview the likes of McCall decided to pull out of contention for the job.

Weir sounded disappointed in the interview, but didn't sound surprised. This is presumably a danger he was fully aware of. Hope he has a plan B...

We have some shocking negotiators at our club and always have had. I remember when Deano went to Leeds we got less than Leeds had offered for some other player a few weeks previous. I wrote in Flashing Blade at the time that surely someone must have known this and that Leeds had this level of money available. You wonder how some of these people run businesses.

Onto McDonald, could Weir not sit him down and say something on the lines of "you are key to this team in the new role, give it until January and if we are not challenging near the top then you can go" Six months is not going to make a lot of difference to McDonald and if Weir believes in what he is doing the he should be able to convince the players

I might be wrong but I would imagine most players have one in these days. Weir should shop round and look for a similar player with a 749k release clause and tell McCabe hes cutting the clubs finances.

Whos to say he will pas the medical ,hasn't he got history with this ?
