these premier league matches yesterday & tomorrow where the local Rivals have a big say in the title race, where people say Man city are supporting Man utd & Man Utd are supporting arsenal have fasinated me . because im interested in wider opinion. & that albeit this hypothetical Scenario would be championship or league 1, as im conflicted i wouldn't want to help Wednesday in any way. but i cant imagine actively cheering against the blades or imagine boos or silence as we go 1-0 up 😄

so if we were hypothetically in Tottenham's shoes as a fan would you be happy to purposely lose a game. if it stopped Wednesday getting promotion or help them survive relegation

or does the pride get in the way & you always want to go to bramall lane & win every game regardless of opposition or circumstances

I was asked this very question by Look North whilst queueing for Wimbledon tickets at the Lane over 30 years ago.

If we had beaten Leeds a few days later then there was the prospect we could help the Pigs win the 1st division title.

I gave an answer which lasted about a minute covering a few different things but the only bit they showed on TV was me saying, 'Anything but Wednesday winning it'

I got pelters from the grunters in my local snooker club.

I care about United first and rivals second. I want us to win every game except that Johnstone Paints trophy or whatever it's called now.

If we lost and then it impacted a rival, then that's a silver lining.

I was listening to Merson last night after the Man U v Arsenal game, talking about Villa v Liverpool, Spurs v Man City on tuesday and I honestly couldn't understand the point he was trying to make. He seemed like he was pissed again.

The fact that Spurs are in a position to be potentially influencing their rivals title bid with two games to go is a coincidence, but if they really cared, then they would've put the effort in against Arsenal the other week rather than looking to lose and throw the title to Man City.

It's hard to say. United and Wednesday have only directly competed once in my lifetime (11/12). I'd likely support United in the way I would always do at a game but then not be too bothered if it ended with a defeat.

I don't go to the United games worrying about what Wednesday do

For Tottenham, many of the "Big Six" clubs call them small, and if they purposefully lost against City so Arsenal wouldn't win the league, it would reflect badly on them specifically. I think if we had nothing to play for, and Wednesday were fighting the drop or in a promotion battle, I wouldn't want to lose, but I wouldn't be that mad if we lost.

In 2001/02, we played Walsall in our last home match (second-to-last game of the season). We were comfortably lower-mid table, but Walsall and Wednesday were both in danger of relegation. We lost 1-0, and there was a general mixed feeling in the crowd. There was definitely quite a bit of laughter and ironic cheers when Walsall scored. The pigs and Walsall both stayed up in the end (Wednesday went down the following season).

If Wednesday were about to win the Prem and achieve something we’d never done…the id be ecstatic if we lost the game that prevented them winning that title. Absolutely elated. What’s not to love about preventing your closest rival from winning THE title? Win or lose, we stopped them winning the title. Glorious.

Merson is a poor pundit, think he's kept on cause they think he might harm himself if they sacked him, always reminds me of Hayes the woman manager

See, this is where we differ.

I want them to experience dejection and misery for every minute of their sorry existence.

From memory, didn’t that result relegate Barnsley ?

I despise Wednesday but it's definitely less since I moved out of S2/S12. Much easier to ignore them

It sounds weird to say, but I'd rather us lose. One meaningless match is nothing compared to that lot winning a league title!

i think thats where i would be, not as intense as normal & more like a league cup 1st rd. where if we win great but if we lost i wouldn't be upset

This thread got me curious about that season, can't remember anything about it so I looked it up... they lost that day and were relegated with 1 game to go, I think if we hadn't lost to Walsall they could still have stayed up. Barnsley were managed by 2 ex-Blades that season - Spackman and Glynn Hodges.

The second tier had plenty of surprising teams that year, in addition to Walsall: Crewe Alex, Gillingham (who finished above us), Stockport, Grimsby.

The attendance for our derbies game with Wednesday was higher at the Lane than it was at Hillsborough.

Oh and it turns out I do remember something about it, the Battle of Bramall Lane. Apart from that though - we spent almost the entire season between 12th and 17th, and did nothing in the cups. No wonder Santos and Warnock tried to liven things up a bit.

If it's the same scenario but we replace Spurs and Wednesday replace Arsenal, I'd still want us to win to give us a chance of champions league football.

Well if it meant us qualifying for the Champions League like it possibly does for Spurs I’d want us to win regardless.

If there was nothing riding on it for us I‘d be more than happy to lose, as would every single pig who’s reading this if it were the other way around.

Also take into account what Arsenal supporters are like as we have experienced (unlike Wednesday fans apart from a minnows v giants cup game 9 years ago)

A bunch of self entitled pricks and easily some of the most dislikable fans we’ve had the misfortune to come across.

They are almost the mirror image of Wednesday fans except they have reasons to be such arrogant nauseating twats while Wednesday fans don’t and still live in 1992 when they were almost relevant and the ’Premiership’ was in it’s infancy with Wimbledon riding high.

So for that reason I can totally see where the spurs fans are coming from and who can blame them?

It's never quite right to say "I don't care how Wednesday do - I only care about United", because the two are slightly intertwined.

If Wednesday won the Premier League, it would undoubtedly take some new fans away from United, with potential long-term consequences. Therefore, if we were mid-table and a loss on the final day could stop Wednesday winning the league (without affecting our position), it would be in our financial interest to lose.

What do you mean it's never quite right to say I don't care about Wendy we support United so what makes you think we should care about them. as far as I,m concerned if Wendy are lower down the league than us. thats great.

Yeah was provably one of our most uninspiring seasons ever like 86 87

I begrudgingly wanted Wednesday to win the Rumbelows cup.
I hated Man Utd, but more importantly I have lots of family and friends who support Wednesday and I knew it meant the world to them.
And I love United more than I hate Wednesday.
I'll put my tin hat on now ......

I'd want us to lose that much I'd insist Gribic played

Pretty sure that Wilder only has Ivo on board in case we somehow find ourselves in such a situation next season, where we need to lose to screw over Wednesday.

It's the most believable reason i can think of as to why we would ever have signed him.

If the Villa score stays the same tonight, then Spurs are still in with a shout of Champions League football next season.

Surely their squad of international players with no connection to the rivalry care more about that than seeing Arsenal win the league.

Either way, City will most likely beat Spurs at a canter anyway.

Told by my Spursy fan mate that they're a bit of a bogey team for City and City don't always walk away with 3 points. If they're up for it they could screw City over though I doubt it. Imagine Pep will go full strength champions league side. Although he in particular doesn't care over the result, City winning is no bad thing he reckons to screw Arsenal over.
