McBurnie

McBurnie really needs to bulk up for me. His best spell for the club was before his illness/injury when he did extra work in the gym and knocked defenders around. He's far too easily knocked off the ball and outmuscled.

I would have him on a strength regime over summer.
He just seems to stumble about the field, looking half pissed.
His general touch and control is usually off and he struggles to strike a ball cleanly.
He usually looks knackered and has no pace and athleticism.
Apart from that he sometimes comes 'alive' in games and gets some goals, he also seems to be good to have around the squad.
A strange, strange player. On balance I'd probably keep him, but not on a lucrative contract.

He gets fouled a lot and I don't think he's strong enough to hold people off and control the ball as well. He never runs freely. Not since the illness/injury anyway.

He does get fouled a lot but unfortunately the reputation of his personality precedes him and the refs never reward him fairly.
There's nothing thing we can do about that + it will be even worse in the bent PL where the "industrial norven monkeys" are most unwelcome.
The more unfairly he is treated by refs , the more frustrated he becomes + it's a vicious circle.
So we cannot afford for him to be a starting striker up there coz he tilts the slant even further in our disfavour.

That shot from outside the box today though, good god. Keep him but if he's anything more than 5th or 6th choice next season we'll be in trouble.

You do wonder if he was/is suffering a bit with Long Covid after not looking quite himself. Still 13 Championship goals is nothing to be sniffed at and done well at the other end too. Pre-season is massive for him this year

Doyle did one equally as bad yesterday

We still aren't playing to his strengths. Despite his ability to head the ball, he's not a target man. He's actually very good with the ball at his feet, as can be seen when we actually give him the ball on the deck. His success at Swansea was down to them never kicking the ball above knee height! He ran us ragged that year - looked a reyt player. We just lump it up to him 90% of the time.

Oh he’s crap again now?

Like Berge according to some , 15 goals is not bad is it?
In a season where we finished top half of the Premier League (with talk of Europe until the final few games) he mustered a meagre 6 goals. And I think we can safely assume we won't finish top half of the prem next season. So it's also a fair assumption that he'll score less than 6 this time round. I really hope he spends most of next season warming the bench.

What behind that 30m striker we are gonna buy 🙄

Mins per goal across the division:

Akpom 111
Tella 148
Morris 170
McBurnie 171
Bradshaw 181
Gyokeres 191
Diallo 199
Piroe 200
Brereton Diaz 248
Ndiaye 266

At one point it seemed like Gyokeres was scoring every week...but importantly he was playing 90 minutes every week. He finished on 4021 mins, incredible for a striker.

Hypothetical I know, but had McBurnie played as much as Gyokeres his scoring rate has him second only to Akpom for the golden boot.

Not saying you’re wrong - but doesn’t that slightly overlook that he was part of that team that finished top half of the PL with talk of Europe. You don’t achieve that with passengers regardless of individual goal contributions.

It’s immense how some people are so determined to do him down. If he’s had the exact same season he’s just had with us with another Championship club and we were linked with many of the same people would be delighted.

I hope he’s not our first choice striker next season - but I equally hope that he’s still around, who knows maybe this season is a launching pad for him to kick on, he’s turning 27 this Summer, not exactly at an age to write-off the possibility of improvement is it.

Not knocking mcburnie here , but those numbers can be misleading, for instance if you have a striker who comes on as sub for the last 15 every game for 6 games in a row, fresh legs running at tired defences and grabs a couple of goals, then they would average a goal every 45 minutes, however had the same player played the full 90 they would have to score 12 goals to match the same goals per game , so it's very unfair to compare

McBurnie has had a good season. Had we played with the same attacking intent shown in the first part of the season throughout he would have got 20+ goals. Matched our best player for goals and done much better than our club legend who can't do no wrong. Yet he is still shit because you know...socks.

This, absolutely this. Has looked his best, when we've tried to play a bit.

I'm convinced that if we'd have spent our money more wisely, rather than on McBurnie, we'd have secured a European place that season.

hes got to show a lot more for me to rate him but one things certain he isnt a premier league striker

The sort of scenario you have described, whilst being a fair point, isn’t actually the case for any of the strikers on that list.

Well maybe not exactly but , don't forget mcburnie played 8 -10 mins against Preston and scored then just under an hour against Birmingham and also scored , so effectively 65-70 mins maximum and 2 goals , so it can skew the figures

Fuck, I almost forgot about the socks

Get him gone!

I've always liked the half-mast socks and lack of shinpads, along with the beard it makes him very easy to identify from a distance when he's up at the opposite end of the ground.

Wonder why Sharp hasn't started pre season with a new club yet ?
I was wondering whether he might make a final goodbye cameo in the Stuttgart game, signing for a new team may prevent that.. Probably wishful thinking!
