I am not sure I a confident we will keep the better players. To be fair to McCabe he allowed us to keep majority of squad (Lowton, Quinn, Monty, Evans, Williamson etc) and gave Wilson chance to get replacements/back ups for evans. O'Halloran did not work and Hoskins got injured/also did not work. We were quite unlucky but also Wilson made some mistakes in recruitment. We were supposed to have a new scouting system and would reap the rewards but the in's list if a bit of a car wreck since last summer. Flynn/Hill/Williams/Mendex Laing/Porter/LJF/Egan is not a list to be proud of at all with only really McDonald coming off. It was the players who stayed Quinn, Williamson, Evans, Lowton, Collins, Doyle that nearly got us back up (these same players put us down) and the incomers outside of McDonald had little impact all year.
It concerns me as I feel any kind of bids for Quinn, Lowton and Maguire and they will go sadly. I think Quinn is a cert to move on and has proved he can do a job in the league above comfortably. the other two also prob can play higher. If Willo and Mcdonald then do not come back the team is one that will be nearer the bottom than top with our best players of those remaining being Collins, Doyle and Cresswell/Porter.
Despite the much vaunted youth side of last season outside of Maguire not sure we have anyone else who is going to break through. Long has not looked convicing when I have seen him and only Whitehouse of the others have shown promise. Likes of Chappel, Philliskirk, Tonne, Harriott are not kids and have been unsuccessful when on loan or not really broke through. Going to sound harsh but I do not see why we are keeping these sort of players as they are not moving forward or getting any better and are never going to be first teamers now at this level.
We need to somehow bring in 4 or 5 pacey, young and hungry players from league one/two. I think if you asked every footballer in League 1/2 to name another club other than their own they would play for in the bottom two divisison and many would put us at the top of the list. We still should be able to attract players with fans/size of club and surely can still afford better wages than likes of Crewe, Hartlepool, Tranmere, Stevenage etc. However, my worry is we are not doing enough to get this type of player and the players Wilson/his scouting team has brought in worries me.
Will be an interesting summer but I fear we missed our chance this year and it will be a long rebuidling process. Leeds and Forest were at this level for 3 years. It would not surprise me if we surpassed that. Once again I hope I am wrong.
