Wouldn't have attracted any additional penalty or ban, just a paper exercise. For those wondering about the 'accidental' aspect, that's bollocks, you can't plead guilty to an accidental assault, only an assault with intent or being reckless as to an assault occuring. Judge plainly thought it was bullshit mitigation, of which defence advocates are very fond.

24 weeks and 10 year ban off a very early guilty plea, in the football offences world, is about as harsh a punishment as it gets.

Tuesday night, employed, pissed and at the City Ground. Thursday night, unemployed, convicted and in HMP Nottingham. Believe me, that's the swiftest justice the British court system will dish out this year. Almost world record speed.
 



As per the above. They charged both offences so that if, for some reason, he was found not guilty of the ABH on Sharp, then he would still be found guilty of an offence resulting in a football ban. As he pleaded guilty to the ABH there was no need for an additional conviction, so the charge was dropped.

It's like arresting someone for murder and possession of an offensive weapon if they stabbed someone to death. They would never find them guilty of the weapon charge unless they were found not guilty of the murder. It's a fallback.

As for this "gets out on good behaviour" myth. It's total bs that people still believe. All people convicted and given a custodial sentence will serve half their sentence in prison, and half on release on licence. If the licence terms are breached they get recalled to prison and go back inside. This applies to everyone unless they are deemed to be a severe risk to the public or themselves, i.e. murderers, rapists, terrorists

The guy who assaulted Billy is not a risk to the public or himself, it was an isolated moment of idiocy. He will serve 12 months in prison then 12 months out on licence.
 
It's 2 weeks off the maximum a magistrate could impose so they probably thought save the tax payer even more money. Hes pleaded guilty early on and if the ban is correct in theory he wouldn't be too much risk on society. He will be made to do an alcohol awareness course inside and serve 2/3rds so 16 weeks with 8 on licence. So mid September release and in police/prosecution not much effort or cost etc

Can you prove that beyond reasonable doubt in a court? If he's got a clean criminal record then it can only treated as what it is, an isolated incident. You can't convict someone based on a what if or hunch. It doesn't work like that.

If you get caught speeding should you be given an automatic driving ban, or 3 points and a fine. On your logic it should be a ban as you've sped once and will likely do it again.

Not having a pop at you by the way.

You used to be able to get them to report to a police station at the time of a match. I knew a bloke who got done for aggro who was banned from Sheffield City centre for several hours before a game. It meant that for night matches, he had to leave work at lunchtime.

You've brought shame to yourself, shame to your club and fellow fans, shame to your team for tarnishing their celebrations, and most importantly, shame to your family. Football is a family game, but that's it, a GAME. Idiot.

Can't believe he tried to try and get a suspended sentence because of his mortgage payments.

The judge had been urged to hand down a suspended sentence on Biggs, who claimed he and his girlfriend would not be able to keep up monthly mortgage repayments if he was jailed.
But the judge said: "Given the gravity of this offence, where thousands were present to witness it, there has to be an element of deterrence."
The judge added the attack could have "given rise to further incidents".

I get that he was likely way too drunk but you know what your doing, and you are aware when you've gone head first into someone's face. If he tried to stop and realise what he'd done different matter. In my eyes he saw Sharp and thought, I'll put one on him and me and my mates can laugh about it later.

As for the McBurnie thing, still need to see more of that, it's not clear. IF he has stamped on a fan it's stupid. That said both he and Brewster are clearly seen being dragged around by their fans. The players safety was at risk and fans shouldn't have been on the pitch. It will be interesting to see if they get some better footage of that incident and then we will know if McBurnie has done something wrong or not.

I'd come on to say exactly this. Any right minded person would think about mortgage repayments and family members before deciding the headbutt a footballer on national TV in bright yellow top.

Glad he's got a custodial sentence, hope it deters a few people who instead now think before acting like a tit in future.

He should have thought about his mortgage before assaulting Sharp.

What a bad decision he’s made - time in the nick, lost his job, likely to lose his house and his girlfriends family will be telling her to get rid of him. Not to mention watching Forest for 20 years, hoping to see them in the Prem and then one game away he goes and gets a lifetime ban.

Not sure the mortgage company will be sympathetic when his girlfriend goes and says her boyfriend has been sent down can we have a payment plan. She'd be better selling off and starting afresh without a convict for a partner.

Hardly likely they will suffer a repossession in 24 weeks. Just a defence ploy. However, ticking the box “do you have a criminal record” may cause an issue in several areas in future. Shame.

How drunk must he have been though, Electrical engineer, lives 30 mins away so perhaps went straight to the pub after work unless he finished early.

So he’d have to have been out all day or supped a lot before getting in the ground, either way he’d have been noticeably pissed and could’ve been denied entry for being too pissed.

Once in the ground perhaps 1-2 then 1 or max 2 at half time. Would they have even have been serving at end of normal time?

Even if he was hammered before the game he’s had 2 hours 15-30 mins where he can only get a couple of beers at best… the way he ran across the touch line at full pelt didn’t look too pissed.

So, being drunk seems a lesser justification for his actions.

And that would leave the opportunity to got and get a few “cheeky lines” in which would still be traceable 72hours later. So I wonder if he was given a drug test as well?

Of course not. If someone on here had said "I hope she gets raped" (or something similar) about a woman, the person who posted the comment would immediately get absolutely slaughtered. It is (of course) a terrible thing to say.

But there seems to be this strange thing, that whenever a male is sent to prison, people start glorifying male on male rape as a suitable punishment. Replace the "male" in that scenario with child, woman, etc and there would be mass outrage. I find it all rather odd. 🤷‍♀️
