Dean Windass admits that he tried to commit suicide earlier this month after battling with alcohol and depression following his retirement two years ago.

The 42-year-old former Hull, Bradford, Middlesbrough and Aberdeen striker's professional career spanned 19 seasons.
Windass, who scored the goal that fired his home town club Hull into the top flight in 2008, told The People: "I have cried every day for two years.
"I took an overdose and, when that didn't work, I tried to hang myself."
Despite earning more than £500,000 a year at the height of his fame, Windass, who also helped Bradford win promotion to the Premier League (scoring 86 goals in two spells with the Bantams), said most of his money was now gone.
His 18-year marriage has broken up and, with little income and grieving for his recently deceased father John, he decided to take his own life.

That is rather sad news that he has hit such a low point in his life.

Its a bit bigger than that. The bloke considered taking his own life. In the light of the Gary Speed incident I would have thought it good for people to exercise some degree of tact. You would expect sympathy for anyone in this position, loaded or otherwise.

I can only assume you didn't read the whole article where he admitted to being a fool. I would always have the utmost sympathy for someone in this position. Big enough to speak out and admit it, which hopefully means more people talk about it and in the end more people decide not to do it. Hats off Deano.
 
It really is the classic footballer's tale of decline. Reading it makes me think that publicised cases must be a tiny fraction of the sorry whole. It's all just so predictable.

At least Windass has got help now. Good luck to him.
 
Was it watching a video of himself "reporting" on a match for soccer saturday that made me feel like this?
 
Well my poor old dad god bless him did not want cancer to take him away age 56 and he unashamedly wept that he was leaving his 21 and 15 year old sons alone as their mum had died age 42, when they were 8 and 2 respectively.
She didn't want to die either.
Neither did my life long bestmate want to die of cancer age 43 and leave his 16 year old son and 7 year old daughter behind.
Windass and the rest of you who have had it to good for to long,there's no sympathy here,only anger.
I will put my flack hat on now,as no doubt these strong views will be attacked. But I have to say it would be so nice if the people who did not want to die could exchange places with those who did

Cynics the right word here. In your experience people who try to top themselves but fail are crying for attention? Well thats alright then, what a shower of bastards they obviously are. How low do you have to be to get to the point where you attempt to take your life but fail?

Was Gary Speed crying out for attention but managed to get it right/wrong, whichever way you decide to look at it?

None of you know Windass, or his personality. Yet you all sit in judgement because he is a footballer. Are rich people not allowed to go off the rails? Because you have a few quid the rules are somehow different? Whatever your financial state, you can be mentally fragile. And in an industry as unforgiving and as testosterone driven as football sticking your hand in the air and admitting your low/need help isn't I'm guessing something you can easily do.

I'm shocked at the sort of things I see posted here.
 



Bert didn't like him much when he played for United, he was the self appointed "People's Favourite".

His story looks to be a sorry tale but it's not easy to feel very sorry for him.

His biggest problem is that he is as thick as pigshit and he didn't have the brains to hang on to his money and marriage because he should have realised that when he finished playing he would never work again.

It isn't about WindassI am more shocked someone can defend someone who wants to take their life, it isn't about money for me. Rich or poor why throw the gift of life away,I would love to be around for ever if it was possible.
Do we know if Mardyass sorry windass donated his fee from the paper to people with depression or is he sat in the pub now feeling sorry for himself and pissing it up the wall ?
Of course I shed tears when Speed died, but more of my tears were for the kids he left fatherless.
 
Anyone is allowed to to post their opinion on here, thats what a forum is for isn't it. If someone posts they are usually inviting comment, or is it just comments in agreement that are invited. I happen to believe that people who attempt suicide dont mean it and are actually saying "hey, look at how life has been shit to me". So it is to many but they take it on the chin and get on with it.
Premature death is always sad but why do we have to have an outpouring of national hysteria because it involves a celebrity. I felt that the Gary Speed thing was overdone, devastating as it was for his family and close friends.
I am accused of not knowing Dean Windass...does anyone who has commented so far know him?
In answer to Brownie...yes, in my opinion he is attention seeking and it worked.
Who is lacing into who exactly?
 
He showed signs of mental weakness at the Belfry just before the play-off final according to rumours.
 
And we still don't know if it was depression that caused speed to kill himself

The thing is it is a bit of high jinx's. I remember going on a Butlins lads holiday and woke up one morning to find that some had a dump in the kettle the previous night.

It wouldn't be that bad, but one of the lads decided to urinate it, and then boil it. It fucking stank

Tragedy comes in many different guises, but it's not a competition. Some are lucky in life, some reckless, and some totally undeserving of it when it comes.

Windass might be as thick as porridge and he might not have looked after certain areas of his life. But I don't know enough to judge his actions so harshly.
