No wonder he quit Twitter.

Because only politicians and footballers get abuse on social media?

You should only be allowed anonymity on Pornhub so people don't know you like [redacted] and Alexa etc don't suggest things they shouldn't when you're getting your Prime Now.

Some of the most racist/fascist leaders on the planet would love for anonymity to be removed from social media....

I reckon if you were planning something that would get the attention of a fascist government and needed anonymity then you wouldn't set up a Facebook group for it.

"Dave invited you to overthrow the government on 17/05/21 - RSVP now."

I get it, it's a shame it's got to this point but it's out of hand. Too many people hiding behind egg profile pictures and just hurling abuse at people.

If people want anonymity then they should be the ones that have to leave twitter, not the people who are using it properly to just post random shit and chat with people.

And it doesn't have to be outwardly obvious who you are either, if you want to be FMBlade then that's fine, but as soon as you're reported for something, there should be a real person attached that can be contacted.

If you're not ok with that, fair enough, but there needs to be more protection for people getting torrents of abuse and that's the only way to do it really.

The Arab Spring wouldn't have happened without anonymity on social media.

(Granted what followed afterwards wasn't exactly an improvement but that's a separate issue)

I'm sure Vladimir Putin would love your suggestion.

You can already get arrested for social media posts if they can locate you so the true anonymity has gone, you're not protected now.

And going on about "muh anonymity" when you're using Twitter from a smartphone that can figure out that you had a shit at 8:45 from your GPS and then suggest Andrex and stool softeners on Amazon the next time you open it based on the grunts you made, seems a bit redundant.

I just think loads of people getting death threats and abuse every day unnecessarily is worse than losing anonymity on an opt in microblogging site.

To be honest I'd shut them all down or at least give them a kicking, they have too tight a hold on us, but it's not my job to come up with a solution anyway, sadly for t'old Vlad.

Nah sorry I get what you're saying but that's a pretty week argument for the abuse, not just racist, that's dished out on SM on a daily basis.

If SM had proper identification in place across the board corrupt governments wouldn't have the resources to silence all the dissenters so I think it's a good move compared to letting the racist, homophobic cunts carry on as normal.

The Arab Spring was also a decade ago. The internet and social media is not the same now, I don't think it could happen now regardless of whether you could be anonymous or not.

Nefarious governments of the world know what twitter is and how people use it, it's not what it was in 2010.

They'd just get the ISPs to restrict access to it and then only a percentage could get round that to use it, vastly reducing it's reach and effectiveness.

social media need to invest money in AI which filters abuse, or put functions in place where public figures can restrict messaging to a certain list of people. Removing anonymity is a dranconian measure which will impinge human rights

Why would removing anonymity impinge human rights? Why should anyone be annonymous and unidentifiable on social media. Surely a victim of abuse on social media has the 'human right' to know who is doing the abuse and abuser details should be relorted to the police

Social media and identity is a quandry. Facebook tried to make people use their own names at one bit which is too much as it opens up a whole world of potential problems around abuse, harassment, bullying etc. The fact is though, there needs to be some way of tracing 'anonymous' posters who break the law but most peope don't trust social media companies with their personal data and for good reason.

There are people who wouldn’t be able to use social media safely without anonymity.

Sticking his head above the parapet again despite taking abuse from the shitbags.

Classy on and off the grass

but doesn’t every PL suffer abuse both on the pitch and on SM?
I’ve often said racism on SM is a red herring.....the bigger picture is respect for your fellow human being.
This is learnt from parents, school, newspapers and even tv.....lack of respect, verbal bullying and insulting is a massive problem in society,
I see it on here all the time....makes you wonder if it’s part of human nature.

we are talking about Facebok, Twitter, Tik Tok etc requiring photographic ID to join. Providing photo ID to these corporations who exploit data to access means of free speech

Freedom of speech is vital to a just society and yet the price of that seems to be that some will abuse it so perhaps what we end up with is freedom of speech with limits that have to be policed. I do emphasize with celebs within the protected characteristics who are abused but feel even more for the shop worker, train guard or council worker etc who don't have wads of cash to comfort them - we mustn't overlook the person in the street. The key word of course is 'respect.' Individually many embrace it, sadly many yet do not.

We already have freedom of speech with limits. The problem is connecting an anonymous account with an individual or bot.

Kids these days...

Looking around I reckon one of the biggest issues with social media today is whataboutery.

What sort of abuse do white footballers get?

James McClean got terrible sectarian abuse for years and there was no boycotts or outrage.

Ched Evans has had the same for different reasons even after his conviction was quashed.

It shouldn't be normalized or accepted but it does happen to everyone, though to different degrees of course.
