Whilst doing the gardening earlier I was trying to think of forwards who had scored a lot of goals for us and held an impressive goalscoring record but I was immediately stumped.

In the late 80s and early 90s there was of course Deane and Agana but since then it seems prolific scorers have been few and far between. The only ones I can think of are Blake and Beattie but I'm only quite young and can't remember much of the 90s so I might be missing somebody.

94 Brian Deane
42 Tony Agana
34 Nathan Blake
34 James Beattie

Blake left for Bolton in 1995 so that means I think I'm right in saying that Beattie is the only player we've had in the last 15 years who has managed to score 30 league goals for us.

The best of the rest...

25 Andy Gray
25 Marcelo
24 Gareth Taylor
23 Carl Asaba
20 Marcus Bent
19 Jan Åge Fjørtoft
19 Jostein Flo
19 Petr Kachuro

What's going on? Do you think any of our current crop will hit 30?

18 Darius Henderson
12 Richard Cresswell
9 Jamie Ward
5 Ched Evans

Are you only counting league goals? Brown got 30+ if you include cup goals.

Interesting Factoid : Nathan Blake has more premier league relegations on his cv than any other player(5).

Really? He deserves it. The bastard. I can remember leaving the Villa game *knowing* we were down. I remember the next home match, and missing the last day of the terrace on John Street, and being in the stand above with a load of sodding Geordies as we beat them 2-0 (Blake 2) to almost seal safety ......

I recall a particularly muscular elbow on Peacock for the second, I think. Actually, I always liked Blake. He was quite a "Bassett" striker ....

Equally, at the risk of being churlish, how many goals were scored by Beattiepen?

We sell any striker who scoresa a reasonable amount of goals for us. In some cases it helps the team (I'm looking at you Messrs Gray & Blake), but in the vast majority of cases we don`t replace them adequately.

Partly the fact that the average lifespan for a forward seems to be one year, partly the fact that we sell anyone who looks like they could and partly beause we're not able to attract the copper-bottomed 30 a yera men in the first place. Except possibly from Scunny...

In the time span your covering PN81,i think you have to look at the players who are supposed to provide the service to the strikers to do their job.We havent had a decent, winger who can actually beat a man and get to the by-line and put a cross in.All ours seem to be long punts into the box diagonally. This makes it much easier to defend and hard to attack the ball.

Forgot to add.Look how many Colin Morris made for Deane and Agana.

We have had lots of good strikers. The only season I can remember us being a little toothless up front was the "triple assault" season under Warnock (strangely enough). A lot of our goals came from midfield that season and the strikers shared them around.

I always said that we were a quality striker off challenging for automatic promotion that season....

Apart from that we've always had the odd decent striker but as touched on before me in this thread, we always sell them when they start to look any good.

Morris was a bit before their time - but your point is valid anyway, we used Bryson on the left and a variety on the right to get crosses into the box for them to put away. Deane and Agana were both pretty handy at getting crosses into the other too.

Fjortoft was definitely prolific, just not here long enough!

I stand corrected CC possibly should have been Hatton and Edwards.I am the best part of 50,so my memory is on the blink.

ian bryson - 38 goals so my sources tell me, 1988-1993.
I fondly remember one of his 38 at home against spurs in a 6-0 drubbing about 1992.

although, to qualify that, bryson was not necessarily a striker but deservese a mention in the goal scoring terms certainly.

Danny Webber is missing from your list. He scored 23 league goals in 72 starts.

I remember that afternoon. Beautiful sunny spring day in Sheff. We stuffed Newcastle 2-0 (deservedly) and look certain to stay up. I was sitting on the kop and (at 1-0) I remember Blake geting carded. It was only yellow, but for a split second we all thought it was red as the sun was shining in our eyes and on the card. Mightily releived afterwards. It was a good afternoon, ionly to be followed by misery the week after. Blake was unplayable that day (as he was when he was in the mood).

in full agreement with that.

Quality strikers (IMO) that we've had since Deane left in 93:

- BT
- Hulse
- HMS Shipps
- Fjortoft
- Blake

Decent strikers (i.e. better than average):

- Webber
- Kabba
- Gray
- Marcelo
- Katchouro
- Andy Walker
- M Bent
