What will this link to the Syrian national team bring to the lane? I have always been quite impressed with being linked to other teams, despite the fact that it hasnt directly given us any players on the pitch.
So what will this link up give to the blades?
A new backyard to scout in?
An Arab Sheik with deep pockets?
or the oppurtunity for the blades shop to sell cheap tickets to Syrias biggest tourist attractions(as with Malta)?
Hopefully this could be a link to the kind of investment as seen at other clubs

Where does Samantha Hashimi live nowadays? :)

Buggar all probably !

In the last 2-3 seasons that we have had these link ups what players from Hungary, Brazil, Australia, China, Argentina and now Syria have we seen play for or discussed bringing to the Lane? 2 guys from China and that's it. Not even Carlos Kickaball to quote SrrAlan !

Just wondered if this is more about the Chairman raising the club's profile so he can sell the club (which I don't blame him if he wants out) than bringing much product in.

Reading last weeks Green 'un it is depressingly familiar about Utd, all hot air and guff and no action. For its size and history the record of Sheffield football since WWII is pathetic at the professional level and has been for years. Getting more like Bristol standard each season which as half a Yorkie I find very very sad.

So you can have as many link ups as you like but it's not getting us where allegedly the Board want us to be.

Would prefer it if we linked up with some new incoming players. instead of which, we appear to be sitting on our hands whilst those about us strengthen. Really do hope I am wrong though!

maybe im being over optimistic but I think that having links to the mid east isnt a bad thing at the moment. Thats where all of the money is. Or as said before it could all be hot air!

What's Syria known for? Of the many things that spring to mind football isn't one of them. So it's about the money then, or so you would imagine.

Bert has been to Syria twice. United's link with them can't be about money because they don't have any but they do love football and it is by far and away their most popular sport.

A waiter in a Damascus restaurant told Bert that after Manchester United were knocked out of the European Cup he couldn't sleep for three days. That is how much they like football.

Trig's also been and in fact stayed in a hotel in Damascus recommended by Bert. What Bert didn't tell Trig, because Bert cliaims he didn't know as he'd booked and paid in advance, was that the hotel didn't take credit cards. On checking out, Trig was coppering up in different currencies and still a bit short. Trig was finally bailed out by a customer, who has subsequently declined Trig's offer to pay him back the $100 he's owed.

Bert's right, there's not much money in Syria, though there is still oil there in declining quantity and no Arab oil shiekhs who are largely Arabia based. Large parts of the country could do with pointing, so maybe McCabe has a big building project in mind.

Bert and Trig on the same thread! A blast from the past and no mistake. Come on you two, get posting a bit more often.

As for the link up with the Syrian National Team it sounds like we are providing some expertise for money (or another advantage), and there is no reason not to. It is one of the conundrums of SUFC that we can consider ourselves to be backward and rustic, when there appears to be the opposite view outside...

I agree, was like old times reading those posts.

I really hope we get off the bottom today...

There was a big trip over to Damascus about a year ago to line up some interest in the Blades, I'm sure I started a thread at the time. There is a little bit of money out there but I think this has more to do with future additional sponsorship revenue which seems to be the way Birch is going about generating additional funding into the club. Creating investment via sponsorship partners who will gain varying degrees of interest/control of the club.

IF there is a sponsorship deal linked to this it is likely to be one of many new ventures in this area of the club that the board are hoping will create significant investment. It will also be one of the smaller ones compared to what is rumoured to be in the pipeline.

What have any of the overseas 'tie-ups' meant to SUFC?
Pretty much absolutely nothing.
Perhaps they've helped McCabe's businesses but they've meant very, very little to SUFC.

Did Bert ever tell you about the time he heard the Birmingham City fans singing "Keep Right On Until The End Of The Road" at the FA Cup Semi Final or about that unfortunate incident in Cuba when Bert was sharing a Bici-Taxi with a cinema usherette..........?

What about the sponsorship deals which have generated more money thanks to our other teams?

I've not even heard anything about this.......

Well upto last season Chengdu and the Mariners. Plus a sister club in Hungary, you might have heard something about it.

McCabe owns Ferencvaros, we don't. We sent them some players and Terry Robinson. Not sure about the players but they didn't like Terry.
Chengdu cost £2m to run, if I recall correctly from the last set of accounts. Since then, they've been demoted due to a bribery scandal.
I presume the Mariners aren't Grimsby but a team down under. No idea what benefits or links we have with them. Feel free to enlighten us though.

Never said we owned Ferencvaros I said our sister club.

Although the sponsorship deals (of which I was talking about) have been due to our unique situation of having this relationship. This also goes for the ongoing discussions with the Maylasians. But I'm sure you have a pretty good handle on all that.

What sponsorship deals?

You're not a Valad Stand man then Len?

Never really saw myself as a Hallam FM Kop man either.
Presumably we got sponsorship for the kop because we had a 'tie-up' with another of our sister clubs, Radio Hallam.

Do Hallam FM own Kennedys? I must keep up ;)

Then again, I assume Raul also meant GAC :)

I'm still waiting for Bob to come back with his 'sponsorship deals'.
Hopefully we'll be getting the pick of all the up and coming Syrian, Australian, Hungarian, Chinese, Brazilian players anytime soon.
Mebbes even quicker than the friendly with Leeds or the pick of the youngsters from Spurs.
