What game do you regret missing the most?

Although I only missed 4 games in 1981-82 season {fav season} the game i regret missing most in nearly 50 years of watching United is Peterborough away {won 4-0} Cant remember why i missed this special game although it was midweek and was working at Brodsworth colliery so i could have been on nights. This game saw Peterboroughs highest crowd for many a year swelled by thousands of blades who saw United thrash a rival promotion team 4-0 and i missed the lot.

I got stuck in traffic for the Burnley game this season and the motorway closed and I ended up missing what was a magnificent performance

The Northampton promotion party. I was the only family member to have a ticket but had had a heart attack earlier in the season (I’d left hospital and arrived at the Lane 2 hours later so I didn’t miss a game) and Mrs Spongebob didn’t want me to go alone even more so when the beam back was announced. So I gave in and handed my ticket to biggey blade but seriously regretted it when we knew it looked likely to be special. After the memories of Darlington and Leicester it was gut wrenching to miss out.

I’d go further than that and say this was the most complete performance from a united side ever. The game will long live in the memory of everyone who was there. Superb team performance, magnificent support. I think most fans will say it will never be beaten ever.

Leicester away. Being 16 and having enough money to go to one of the last two games Blackburn or Leicester away, I literally made a schoolboy error and went to the one that was coming up next. If Whitehurst had scored I might feel differently but then again Leicester would still have been a big party

I have to concur, I've seen some memorable performances over the years but that was the epoch. 1-11 were superb all. I often think about matches I wish I'd missed, Boxing Day, Walsall, play-off x 4 and then I think of the ones I felt privileged to have seen and that night at the Posh is tops.

Ditto missed Peterborough away, went to about 10 away games that season but missed that one and to top it missed Darlington as well. I was only 12/13 that season so it was my dad who took me, pushed him to take us to a few in the run in Blackpool, Scunthorpe, Halifax, Crewe, Bury, Mansfield but kick myself for not trying a bit harder to talk him to going to Peterborough (understandable on a school night I suppose) and defo Darlington. Annoying thing was played tennis with my dad in the afternoon up at High Hazels park, only for him to tell me he'd seen loads of buses going from Darnall, loads of Blades fans in fancy dress and was going to phone to see if I wanted to go. Still gutted about that nearly 40 years later!!!

I remember missing the game against Sheffield Deaf as I'd have been at the United game instead, but do remember some of the lads mentioning it the next time I turned out. At the time I tended not to let Saturday cricket get in the way of United matches. I think we tended to struggle to get a full XI when the football season was on.

I did the exact same thing ,got back about midnight had to go to school the next day and did not sleep at all that night ,literally

Small world init !!! Yes that's one of the problems many club teams have in the modern world getting blokes who are married with kids to commit to a full Saturday most weekends through the summer. I guess it's always been a problem to some extent.

I think I packed in playing in 1993. We started in the Norton league in 1990 (and struggled to get a team together on 5th May 1990, I have a feeling only 9 turned up and we won!!! ... i went to Filbert Street that day). We'd just been a gang of mates from school, who started our own football team in 1985, then extended it to cricket a few years later. I think the cricket team went on til 1994, and the football team went on well into the 2000s.

That night at London Rd was very special, one of the best away atmospheres I've been in . My mate was at Cambridge Uni and brought two of his mates along , they both still talk about it and still follow The Blades as a result of that night.

Like a few above , the one I regret missing most was Darlington away. It was the first game of the cricket season and being unavailable for football attending reasons wasn't tolerated , and I wouldn't have got back in the team for a while.

The famous away game at Manchester United in 1971 when we got locked out . I was 3rd in the queue to get in just as the gates closed. Like hundreds of others, I hung around outside and got in for the last 15 mins when the gates opened, it was 0-0 , and just in time to see that goal Best scored against us that is shown time & time again.

Apart from a great score line, I'd seen the November 22 game, which would have been enough in it's self, against what was probably a decent, mid-table team.
I would liked to have seen the shenanigans that took place on that day regarding a certain player of no little ability. He was probably having a day where all goes right, geniuses must also have those days, and turned the screw too much which he had with in him. Resentment must have grown, with the score line, I know from reliable sources he was being kicked from pillar to post.
My problem is I've never got my head around the facts, because there have been many conflicting stories of the events, so it would have been good to have seen for myself, then added on others sightings to draw my own conclusions.

Darlington away, too young and my Dad wouldn't take me, and the last midweek home I missed, Northampton 7-3, Mum said no to midweek!

I was that upset she relaxed the lockdown and I went to the next midweek game, 1-0 v Wigan, and when I returned home without been murdered she let me continue.

Leicester away, my dad had taken me to loads of away games that season but for some reason didnt take me to that one even though he went.

Other one is Tottenham at home in the cup under Clough. We were away skiing but it was a toss up between going away or going to the game instead as we were booking last minute. We decided to go to the away leg and go skiing and to watch it in the pub but clever old me decided to snap my arm in half a couple of hours before kick off and got to spend the next 3 days smacked off my tits in hospital instead. Meant to watch the game back but have never got round to it.
