Sander starts

Tough for him to go straight in to the 11 today with the system we play. Don’t think it was the best call from Wilder but we’ll let him off. Showed some promising touches, but we looked better when Lundstram came on. Looking forward to seeing how he plays with a full week under his belt against Bournemouth.

So, his debut was ok but not great? To be expected after three days, no?

Genk 1-0 during halftime BTW, well deserved.

Exactly that. It was a poor game generally though.

We now have 3 consecutive home games against weaker PL opposition. I expect him to be able to show us a lot more in these matches where we'll have a lot more of the ball. My guess is that we probably had about 30-35% possession whilst Sander was on the field today.

Looks a talent. But needs to get up to speed with the Premier League, it's pace and physicality looked like they caught him out.

A few weeks of CWAKs full on training sessions will sort him out!

3 points for me here:
  • Surely he’s earmarked for Norwood’s position longer term (and was operating in an unfamiliar role with unfamiliar teammates today)
  • Lunny came on when we were leading and the game had opened up.
  • We play an unusual system that will take time to get used to (and get up to the fitness levels required). Anyone judging Sander before he’s completed a full preseason with us wants their head checking.

The only issue with SB today for me was that he struggled to get up to the pace of the PL.

It’s only a matter of time before he does tho

There where small glimpses of the quality he possess and those glimpses will turn into large portions of the game in good time imho

He'll be fine once he's had a few Wilder bollockings and he's been to Dublin on the piss.

PS are you allowed to post here now we aren't in EU?

No idea, I'll apply for a visa?

Genk won too. 1-0. Should've been a lot easier with a missed penalty, but in the situation we're in... I'll take it. :)

You must have plenty of cash to invest in new talent unless McCabe has bought you?

Physicality? He used his strength and size very well on plenty of occasions.

I can think of one occasion when he dawdled I’m the ball and that was just before he came off.

Never easy playing as a midfielder in a team that’s not on it and not having much possession, but you could still see his strength, intelligence and quality.

Norwood, Fleck and Mcburnie we atrocious for the first 50 minutes

I thought he put us in control when he came on. Like the Lunny from earlier in the season, full on energy.

The game was a lot more open by the time lundstram came on, he did well but we were already in the lead and palace were never going to keep up the intensity of the first half when they were very good imo

Agree, and there were signs that SB was driving forward more, before he come off (our goal changed the game). Yes Lunny played very well when he came on, but i think SB would have grown into the game as well, had he stayed on.

On the Youtube clips i've seen, he's certainly no slouch. Sometimes when you're playing with new teammates and maybe a system you're not fully up to speed with, you need that split second longer on the ball to assess. Once it becomes second nature to him, he'll fly :)

To be fair midfield was very congested until we had more pace up top with Mouset who stretched play which meant more space in midfield, Lunny did play well when he came on but had more time and space than Berge did, thought sharpe and Mcburnie did ok but need at least 1 pacey player up top.

They said on Norwegian TV that he had covered the most ground of all players on the pitch at the time he went off. I think he was ok on a day where both teams struggled to play good passing football. Our style is very much based on carefully developed roles and movement patterns, and players' understanding of each other, so it's not easy to adapt immediately, regardless of one's individual ability. Berge's role is also quite new to him. I think he was told at the break to focus a little more on stopping the supply to Zaha, and that did help.

Lundstram was excellent when he came on, maybe he's become a bit complacent the past few weeks, but he was back to his early season form today. Long may that continue, we need competition and more than the first eleven contributing.

Wilder said he was surprised at Palace's tactics, them being more attacking from the start. Normally they are cautious first half and go forward more second half. That may explain Mousset not starting, with the plan being that we expected there to be more space for him in the second half. Eventually that was the case, but probably more helped by us taking the lead than Palace's tactics.

On that display you wouldn't say he lived up to the hype at all, but it would be very harsh to judge negatively as the whole team were a bit shit today. (Bar hendo) plus he has very little understanding of our system.

Little glimpses of what's to come, I thought. In a game that was very scrappy and congested in the middle for the most part and where we never really had any controlled periods of possession there were a few drops of the shoulder and quick passes into feet or space that looked easy but weren't.

More importantly, he appeared settled, comfortable in his role and had a nice moment with the fans at the end. From everything you hear about him, he comes across as a very grounded, intelligent lad who's clearly bought into the whole club. He's going to be some player for us.
