By my reckoning West Ham, Brighton, Bournemouth & Newcastle all finish the season on 35 - 38 points. Could well be another goal-difference relegation this year!

No. Almost every Blade agrees (reason speaking). But our pessimism is deeply ingrained (emotions speaking). It will take several more years of positive progress to reduce the pessimism for many of us scarred by years of cock-ups.

Looking at the thread, none of the posters who’ve stopped posting have got very good reaction scores. It’s as if in those days no one really used the ‘like’ button.
 
Can't see 38 as being enough, we need to be 43 to be certain & probably 40 to lift us above the chasers.

I felt happy at 10 points clear until this thread. Cheers!!

I find the "I'm a Blade, I have to be worried about the sky falling in" very tiresome.
It's not just about points, it's about position. Position gets you relegated, not points, and currently there are too many teams between us and a relegation spot with too few games who all have to perform better than us, 4 of them considerably better than us. Combine that with the fact that in 2007 we were a poor team playing desperate and questionable tactics (not bothering away, ffs) and today we are a great team playing some PL teams off the park and it's give-your-head-a-wobble time for some people.

I'm not worried about relegation but I don't think for one second that we're safe. I'm naturally cautious and our history doesn't help.

We're only 3 points ahead of Newcastle and Palace, 2 of Southampton. If we have a bad run then we'll be pulled down into it. it would be daft to spend your time worrying about relegation at this stage but equally daft to think there's no chance of it happening.

"I'm not worried about relegation but I don't think for one second that we're safe" is a contradiction in terms. You're either worried about it or you're not. This whole "mathematically safe" thing is bollocks, Man City aren't safe yet either.
Which element of our history has a real, actual effect on anyone or anything in the club today? Apart from fans' self-flagellation, that is.
As I said, four teams have to better us in the remaining 14 games, two by 10 points, two by 8 points. If that actually happens, another six teams also have to do better than us, even if just by 3 points. So by thinking that it could happen, you are essentially placing more faith in the ability of all those ten teams, their players, their managers, than you are in ours.
If you really think that after watching our players and our manager over the course of this season, then you have a different view of our team than I do. I also have to ask you what you think the meaning of "fan" is, if you think about how badly we can do, regardless of what you are seeing and experiencing.
Bottom line, if you can't be optimistic at our best time in decades, what is the point?

With the possible exception of Norwich, every team in the league would be rated by a neutral as having better players than us.

We've done brilliantly to be in this position but we have got here because we are a unit. A team. Liverpool aside, more so than any other in the league. No one knows how we'd do if we were to lose a couple of key players to injury. Our main weakness is upfront. Stop playing so well as a team and we'll struggle to score whilst being leakier at the back because we have to take more risks.

Anything can happen in football. I'm not stupid enough to think that a run of bad luck or bad form could see us pulled down into a relegation scrap. I'd say Norwich are gone. However, both Bournmouth and Watford are capable of going on a run and West Ham look likely to pick up. We're 3 points clear of 14th. This league is incredibly close. 4 points separate 9 places.

As things stand, I'm confident of staying up. I think we'll finish 11th or 12th. I'm not daft enough to think that this is a given though.

So you are worried about relegation, despite what you claimed. You don't have all that much faith in our team, as you think it's only luck that's preventing us from being pulled into a relegation scrap. In other words, enough bad luck to allow 4 teams to catch about 6 points up each and our team isn't good enough to not be at the mercy of luck.
You think every team in the division bar 1 has better players than us - we'll have to agree to disagree on this one - you realise you're supposed to be a fan, not a neutral, right?
But of course you're doing the usual trick of covering all bases, doing brilliantly, finish 11th, could drop like a stone, survival not a given, too close to call, etc. You'll never be proved wrong, right?
To be honest, I have no idea why you torture yourself - reading this post is in the realms of wrist slitting. But you're not alone.

Just checked and we are 200/1 for relegation on Skybet. £5k would soften the blow a little I must admit...
 
Anyone who knows our history can understand the pessimism of some Blades fans after all the last day relegations and play off final defeats in the past 40 years.
There will always be a nagging doubt for anyone who isn't a Happy Clapper and this is compounded with the league being so tight this season, and only Norwich looking pretty much certain for the drop.
 
If we were in the position the other clubs below us are in I would worry. We are finished with dropping points to Liverpool and Man C teams below us still have those to come.

No. But there's not the contradiction you think there is. Most of the time when someone talks about being worried they mean that there's some preoccupation and stress over it, not that they don't think it's a possibility.

Too many double negatives in there, don't quite get it.
Some people constantly post that "we're not safe yet", "we need x points before we can relax", "remember we didn't expect to get relegated 13 years ago", "x happened to us 50 years ago", "y happened to us 5000 years ago", etc etc etc. It's not as if everyone on here doesn't know all these things, so the only reason for constantly raising it is because they genuinely think there's a more than remote chance of it happening.
To use your analogy, everyone has insured their home against fire, but when you're down the pub and start talking about adding an extension, there's always one mate who keeps interjecting that your house could burn down at any moment. Yes it could, but you'd get pissed off pretty quickly with his doom and gloom scenario spoiling every conversation.
