Yeah. They got stitched up by their owners. As I recall, they told them they wanted to apply for planning permission to redevelop the Goldstone Ground as this would increase its value and they could then borrow against it to invest in the first team.They played their home fixtures at Gillingham? That's really far. That's.... check google maps 74 miles! Respect to their fans who made that trek for "home" games.
So they got planning consent to redevelop it into a trading estate. Then sold it to developers. I’d just moved to Brighton, would have been 1997 and I remember seeing the ground, dirty and looking abandoned and then a couple of years later it was an estate with Curries etc on it.
There weren’t many options because there weren’t any other clubs near Brighton (Crawley were non league).
