He was immense in the 2nd half. Made Wesley look amateur when he kept nipping in to intercept those passes to him, then off he went charging up the pitch.

And that backheel !

It will be a sad day when if he ever leaves us. I hope we get another couple of seasons from him, because he is very comfortable at this level.

Our squad just isn't good enough to compete "on paper." Unless every team somehow, coincidentally, has their one off annual nightmare against us we're doomed. Basham deserves to be mentioned amongst the recent greats . People have compared him with Bob Booker. Don't get me wrong , I loved Bob , but his career was very mediocre before he came to us , and he gained his popularity with the Blades fans by raising his arms & fist pumping in front of the Kop to get the crowd going. Bob did very well for us but over a very short period. Bash has been around much longer and been a tremendously influential player throughout that time and continues to be just that.

He epitomizes the spirit, drive and determination of all the players who have got us here. He had his own self doubts as he dropped down the leagues but he has shown where knuckling down and working hard can get you.

Every time he has a below psr game or makes a mistake the doubters are out in force but the lad is going to be very very hard to replace

Last season one of my mates was trying to work out how we could be so good without any star names or big money signings. I told him it's because of players like Chris Basham. I described him as a solid player who rarely stands out in matches, but also doesn't mess up. He's a solid but spectacular consistent 7/10 player. I told him no team would ever be interested in signing him from us because he doesn't stand out, but if he ever left we'd be devastated and be worse for it, as he's one of the heart beats of our team. My mate couldn't understand what I meant, but I knew Blades fans would.

He's one I readily admit I got wrong. Under Adkins I though he was part of the problem of why we remained stuck in L1 for so long. He had heart, but nowhere near enough quality and seemed to make a howler for every decent thing he did.

I was amazed he stepped up to La Liga so well, so happy to trust CW/AK if they wanted to keep him, but I expected a replacement last summer.

I thought Basham was a wholehearted but ultimately not quite good enough League One central midfielder. He's been revelatory since moving into the back three and can now genuinely be considered a 21st century United great. It took him a little while to adjust to the Premier League: he was caught in possession way out of position for Leicester's first which was scored down his channel. Since the September international break though he's been superb.

I suspect there may be a small alteration to Wilder's flipchart: we now have the luxury of not having to find a ready made RCB but can instead find someone with the potential to take over in a couple of years.
