This has 0-0 written all over it!

Although I’d luv us turn on the style and shove those “championship squad” “lacks quality” comments down their throats.

Always had a dislike for them since the Stan Ternant Vs Neil Warnock sagas.

Didnt Stan Ternant accuse Kevin Blackwell if listening into their team talk os something when he was assistant to NW?

Yes. He opened the dressing room door to find Blackwell stood there with a glass to his ear. It was a dead giveaway really! :D

I like Burnley actually. Maybe because I used to enjoy watching them on MOTD when they were in the old 1st Division and had some good players, Steve Kindon, Martin Dobson, Leighton James, and my favourite, Ralph Coates- he of the party-streamer haircut! Or maybe it's because I used to live and work in that area some years ago and thought the people were wonderful, salt of the earth types, who passionately supported their club, even though they were stuck in the old 3rd division at the time - and all this at a time when local rivals Blackburn Rovers - had come into some money and were tearing it up!

Seeing them established in the Premiership gives me some pleasure. It proves that you can do it if you set about things the right way. And they have done. They are a small town club with a big heart and a lot of ambition and they are well-supported - and have a good manager. There's a lot to admire about them. The comments from their fans about this fixture give you some indication also as to what type of folks these are - they are genuine, down to earth, supporters. I hope Burnley stay at the top level of football for a long, long time. Their fans had to wait a long time for it to come back - a bit like us - and they deserve their time in the sun.

Despite all that, I hope we give them a good tonking on saturday. I've no doubt we will play well. Whether we can muster more than 1 goal though is a different question? I think it will be a tough game with two very spirited teams going at it hammer and tongs. Maybe Billy will get a start - and if so then I think we might find the back of the net a bit more often than them.

Quite respectful, I little surprised as before the season I seem to remember they were one of the most derisive in their comments about us. Something about us being ten years behind them I seem to remember m.

championship squad? and Burnley are like what? Real Madrid?

I wish people would stop calling this a Championship squad & one that "lacks quality." Total bollocks.
I agree.
Would love to know when promoted championship players become premier league players. When we finish in the top 12 for the next 3 years in a row, well still be a “championship squad”

Really looking fwd to it and genuinely can't call. Few pre match beers with some old claret mates first.

“Chuffed they’ve gone up….nice 6 points for us next season”

“They are 10 yrs behind us”

However complimentary they may be now, I still remember these from Roy's promotion reactions from Burnley. Hope we do them over.

You could say that 🤣

👊🤜🥊

Got Ternent's autobiography and there's a blacked out page in reference to Warnock 🙂

He reckons he did a flying kung fu kick on the dressing room door to catch Kevin or someone listening in and later stuck nut on Kevin in the referee's dressing room.

It's a bullshit lazy quote because we're using players who were in last season's side and who haven't played in the all-singing-all-dancing Premier League before.

It's just as easy to say that Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes (and a few more in Burnley's team) are "Championship" players. Except they're not, at least not any more.

Give it till the end of the season and, if we're safe, they won't be calling them "Championship" any longer.

Ten games in, suffice to say our players are Premiership players.

"Championship squad". Let's have a look at where Burnley's starting XI against Chelsea came from

Nick Pope - Charlton (Champ)
Matt Lowton - United (L1) - signed when Burnley were in the Championship
James Tarkowski - Brentford (Champ)
Ben Mee - Man City (PL) - signed when Burnley were in the Championship
Erik Pieters - Stoke C (PL - just relegated)
Jeff Hendrick - Derby (Champ)
Ashley Westwood - Aston Villa (Champ)
Jack Cork - Southampton (PL)
Dwight McNeil - Man U (PL - signed for Burnley's U23s)
Jay Rodriguez - West Brom (Champ)
Ashley Barnes - Brighton (Champ)

Sources:
PL 2
PL U23s 2
Champ 6
L1 1

The only senior pros they've signed from a fellow Premier League side are Jack Cork and Erik Pieters although the latter came from relegated Stoke. Their side is arguably more Championship than ours!

FWIW: United vs West Ham
Henderson - PL (loan)
O'Connell, Egan - Brentford (Champ)
Basham - Blackpool (Champ)
Baldock - MK Dons (L1)
Lundstram - Oxford (L1)
Norwood - Brighton (PL)
Fleck - Coventry (L1)
Stevens - Portsmouth (L2)
McGoldrick - Ipswich (Champ)
Robinson - Preston (Champ)

PL 1
Champ 5
L1 3
L2 1

Was told in the early 2000’s that a mate of a mate got punched away at Turf Moor for ‘being black’. He’d just been on holiday for 2 weeks and looked slightly tanned at best.

In fairness, I can understand the Championship squad. The sum of all parts and the manager are Premier League. The way to look at it is if all the players were sold who would buy them. I would now say that,
Stevens, Jack, Egan Fleck would definitely be sold to a PL club. Baldock, Lunny, Norwood and McG possibly. The rest would be Championship

Probably 1993, where Adrian Littlejohn got sent off for fighting with Adrian Heath. We drew 2-2 and won the replay 4-2.

At that time, Burnley were on the way down and ended up in danger of going out of the league, with a last day win in 1987 v Orient saving them if I recall.

Who needs Silent Blade? :)

Actually, I’ve just remembered, Adrian Heath got me tickets for the replay, I worked with one of his best mates and he sorted some out, corporate I think, which probably meant pie and pies with a light ale at Turf Moor.
Ah,so you were the one that ate all the pies:D

Always like Burnley for 1984.

Also their following in the 1993 cup tie was one of the best I’ve seen at The Lane.

I also remember how magnanimous their fans were in the pub after the play-off final. They club have rubbed our noses in it but didn’t. Fair play.

Hope we win tomorrow (obviously) but I like Burnley as a club.

“I think Sheffield Utd are doing a Burnley, but better at doing a Burnley than we are at the moment.”

Doing a Burnley, that’s an accolade if ever I’ve heard one!

Cheers Roy(3 points tomorrow)

"Party streamer haircut" 😂 that's quality mate. Best description I've ever heard. And I agree Lancastrians are largely very humble and genuine in my experience.

1993 replay, first time I’d heard the littlejohn song to the tune of a weetabix advert that was always on at the time. Good song that.

Putting a glass to your ear is a well known remedy for earache. !

Good comments from the CLARETS, I was at the game in 93 I'm sure it was 8k they brought down ....but it was a regular thing in them days ..

+ I'm meeting up with my old battle partner from colne ,mates since 1989 THE LIGHT INFANTRY COMRADES FOREVER

Thanks Roy 👍

“In last 30 years or so I think the 9000 we took to sheff utd in the cup would be our best outside of wembley. I remember it well. “

I don't! anyone enlighten me?

One of the biggest away crowds I can remember at the Lane. sections of the South stand were given over to Burnley. Quite a contrast when we played their local rivals Blackburn at the Lane in the 6th round replay later that year, with very few Blackburn fans in attendance.

In reaching 3 FA Cup semi finals ( in 1993, 1998 and 2003), remarkably we only won 1 away match; the replay at Burnley noted above.

I love comments like this:

“He’s a good manager and very similar to Burnley they all know their roles and the system he wants to play.
Really pleased for Norwood – local lad who loves playing and has worked really hard to get where he is. He’s had plenty of ups and downs in his career but always worked hard.
Will be interesting when we play them – their defensive record is excellent. Will be a tough game for us.”

When I think of Burnley I think Stan Ternnent the man with the face you just want to keep on punching to a bloody pulp. Maybe that's why I have never liked them much in recent years. Forget playing the top clubs in the top six this will be a real tough game if we are not at it, Burnley will work their bollocks off.
