Kyel Reid joins Charlton on loan for remainder of the season

For unclickable

13.10 Macclesfield Town have signed Derby County winger Greg Mills on a one-month loan deal.

13.03 Charlton Athletic have snapped up Sheffield United winger Kyel Reid on loan for the rest of the season.

12.55 Middlesbrough have agreed a deal to sign Celtic defender Stephen McManus on loan until the end of the season.

12.47 Sam Allardyce expects Benni McCarthy to complete his move to West Ham United by Sunday, with the Blackburn Rovers striker's switch currently held up due to work permit issues.

So thats one winger out, does this mean new arrivals? ;)

No real surprise here. Quinny has done well on the left recently. Ward and Yeates can all play there at a pinch too.

That said, I'd still like a new left winger.

Left back, left winger and central defender please. I think we'll only see the latter.

To be fair, he didn't really.

Also he boasted after signing him that he had beaten off Middlesborough and a PL team for his signature,.

Maybe he did *shrug*

Another classic Blackwell moment. Signs the guy, never gives him a chance and then lets him go on loan.

Reid had a promising pre season and then got offered nothing. Not a chance. Despite us having no natural winger then he still doesn't get a chance. Even during the 'injury crisis' when we were down to '12' players KB stilll wouldn't play him. He'd even sooner play LB Stewart on the wing.

I feel for Reid. Maybe there is something going on behind the secenes. Perhaps he's not pulled his weight on the training ground. However, when I've seen him on the pitch he's looked lively. Against Bristol he came on with seconds to spare and out of sheer determination made the winner. Did he get a look in? of course not. He obviosuly has too much flair for the team. H'e's in danger of being creative and not a work horse. Or perhaps he just couldn't kick the ball high enough in the air. Ridiculous.

I am on a personal crusade to ban the phrase "never given a chance". Yes, that's the Kyel Reid we "never gave a chance to" who is so fab that, over 5 seasons he has made 22 league starts for clubs in the top 2 divisions (18 of them for Barnsley and Blackpool), has had 6 different clubs in those 5 years, who before signing for United was on loan at 4 different 2nd tier clubs, none of whom signed him, and who has now signed for a 3rd tier club.

Seems to me he's had lots of chances at this level from lots of different managers. Maybe, just maybe, he's not good enough for this level.

Surely you must agree Darren that signing him up, giving him a total of about forty minutes and then shipping him out on loan doesn't constitute good business? Why gamble when you so effectively show that he's never been good enough for this level?

Remove half a season from your point above and does the case change significantly? No, and yet we signed him. Hardly a case then to defend US not giving him a chance.

More's likely when he was observed close up in training, he just didn't cut it. A wasteful signing, none the less.

Ha ha, brilliant.

So why the fuck did we sign him???????

It's all good and well giving excuses as to why Reid 'never got a chance' from when before he was at the club. KB knew all this beofre hand and stills signed.

Come on Daren, tell me I'm really intrigued to here ..... how can you justify Blackwell singing (on a permanent contract I may add) a 'over 5 seasons he has made 22 league starts for clubs in the top 2 divisions (18 of them for Barnsley and Blackpool), has had 6 different clubs in those 5 years, who before signing for United was on loan at 4 different 2nd tier clubs, none of whom signed him, and who has now signed for a 3rd tier club'?????

I agree it was probably a daft signing. We probably have been paying him peanuts and KB probably thought it was worth seeing if he was better than his record would suggest. It appears that he wasn't.

What gets me is, where all the evidence suggests the reason a player is shipped out to a lower league team is because he isn't very good, the old "not given a chance" chestnut gets wheeeled out with all the predictability of a very predictable things.

Far be it from me to say anything that might resemble agreement with Blackwell but I've seen all Reid's cameos. He seemed to me a headless chicken full of pace but lacking a football brain.

I get the impression that some of you think that anyone who purports to play on the wing must be good at it, witness the fuss about Swansea benchman Cotterill.

Slow down Ollesendro, I don't think this is entirely a football issue.

I can't find the article on the OS (because of the crap searching facility) but you obviously didn't read the comments of Sam Ellis a couple of weeks back, so you'll have to forgive me if i'm not entirely accurate on this.

From Ellis' comments it seems that Reid has had some off the field problems with his family and (I think) he has had difficulty settling in Sheffield. There is perhaps an element of the confidence and football reasons as well, but I don't think its as cut and dry as "he's off on loan so he must have had a bust up with Blackie" or "he's not pulled his weight"

I think a lot of people are pissed off with us signing players who aren't good enough. If we sign players, hardly play them but pay them in full, it's a bit disheartening.

If it turns out they're crap, then we're right not to persevere. But you have to question the homework.

I've only seen Reid at the Lincoln City pre-season game. You seem to have summed him up perfectly. Lightning pace but little end product.

In my garage I have a Mercedes-Benz 230SLK and a Saab 93 (both about 12 years old I hasten to add). The M-B is fun when the sun is shining and I feel like indulging myself, but when the weather is poor, or I want to take a load of stuff to the skip, or do the dirty jobs, I tend to use the Saab.

A bit like the comparison between Reid and Cresswell perhaps?

(Maybe Reid's parents were dyslexic. They couldn't spell Kyle) :)

The departure of Cotterill and Reid, and the selection of central midfielders (Williams, Quinn), full backs (Walker, Stewart) or forwards (Ward, Cresswell) in the wide positions indicates that there's no room for a quick, athletic out and out winger in Blackwell's style and preferred formation.

I think it's also down to whether they can track back and defend as much as what they can offer attacking wise. One of the 1st things KB said about Yeates is that he tracks back well. This is all part of KB's defence minded philosophy.

Its difficult for me to comment on this lad because ive seen about 10 minutes of him over two appearances. I sadly missed two games he featured a little more prominently in.....

It just makes me laugh that KB spoke recently (I think today actually) about going in for players that 4 or 5 other clubs want and that other players that are available dont have the desired qualities to cope with the pressure of a big club. Not only is he suggesting that we cant compete for players as soon as there is any competition but that he is choosy over players because he doesnt think some are up to the task.

Newsflash mate.....youve signed several players that weren't and aren't up to the task;

Andy Taylor
Kyel Reid
Andrew Davies
Justin Haber
David Cotterill
Brian Howard (he was ok to be fair but never shone as he should)

Now we are another man light with little hope of anyone coming in before 5pm monday. Round and round we go, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Yes, I think that's spot on.

Thats a shame, thought he looked very pacy and tricky on the ball in the few games he got a chance.

When I saw him in the early season matches he would collect the ball and run straight with his head down without doing anything productive and then the next time he received the bal he would do the same thing again. I could tell straight away that he is a quick player but easy for the defence to sort him out as he lacked variety.

A good mate of mine for many years is a West Ham season ticket holder said he was poor at West Ham.

I am quite sure that KB likes pacy players. Just that I think Blackwell hadnt seen enough of Reid before signing him and then realising that he isnt good enough at this level

NW did the same too. Remember Kristian Rodgers, Lee Baxter, Alan Fettis, Dries Bousatta, Barry Hayles and there were many more of his signings that didnt come off well

Yes. And none of those constitute good business! "Neil Warnock did it" is not a valid excuse.

Were you too young to remember NW's failed signings?
