Can we learn anything from the Norwich game?

Alot has been said about keeping to your identity and brand of football once promoted to the Premier League.

However I'm sure Norwich will be in two minds about that theory now.

Whilst playing positive attack minded footy should never be discouraged an element of realism and respect is required (especially when playing away)

The more I think about it the more I have to come to accept a flat 3 in midfield (with potentially also a defensive mid behind them) will be a feature of our away games this season love it or hate it.
 



Score more, concede fewer?

I'm sure it's always hard to take a result like that from a psychological perspective but losing to Liverpool like that is really nothing. It wasn't long back they turned over a much better team than Nowrich to put themselves in the Champions League final. Which they won.
 
I don’t think Norwich have any choice. They’ve still got the same team and haven’t strengthened so to expect a change in style from what got them promoted is unrealistic on many fronts. They were leaky as a Championship side so will ship
Goals this season and are likely to struggle. We’ve reinforced the areas that, potentially, might have come up short in the Premiership but we’ll see. That all said, they got spanked in their first game by the European Champions so I won’t be either crowing or worrying too much about us changing style. Liverpool won’t be the defining games of our season ahead.
 
How stupid you have to be to go at the place of the best pressing side in the world and you try to play out of the back with Grant Fucking Hanley in your defence....there is sticking to your philosophy and there is plain stupidity.
 
We've tried playing a flat 3 on several occasions and we just don't have the players to pull it off. If we play that against Bournemouth we'll get slaughtered.

I agree the need to have a more defensive formation for big away games but I don't think we can do it with 5 at the back. Maybe 4-1-2-2-1 and play on the counter. We need a protector in front of the defence but also to win the battle in midfield.

Wingbacks leave gaps and a team like Liverpool play a formation which would threaten to rip us to pieces. Going to need to cower behind a pillow some of this season.
 
1. Playing football is the best way to go about it, Liverpool will still put a few past you, you just might get a couple yourself though, and against the teams who have removed all attacking ideas and gone full survival mode, it'll get you points.

2. To not improve a poor defence when you've been promoted to a division higher is mental.

3. The transfer window ending before the season is great. Klopp and Farke will really have to earn their money now, Klopp with 1 senior keeper, and Farke with a colander at the back until January. Over to them.
 
Against the likes of Liverpool and Man City it is a bit unrealistic to play the same way as you did against Championship teams they are going to rip you a new arsehole at a canter as shown tonight. I don't see it doing much for their confidence or goal difference, luckily Liverpool took their foot off the gas and strolled the 2nd half or it could have been a lot worse. Play open games later in the season when top sides are looking at their goal difference will get Norwich some big hidings.

I think football is like life. Do what you do best. Play to your strengths. Accept that you won’t always come out on top but know that you did your best.

Don’t try and be something you’re not. But also be aware that you need to adapt and change to different circumstances. What worked well yesterday doesn’t mean it will work tomorrow.

In Norwich’s case I don’t think they disgraced themselves tonight. That was a huge test for them and although they failed ultimately, I thought they showed positive signs that they learned something from it.

The bigger concern for them is that they went into this having not strengthened the squad to prepare for a bigger challenge. I think that’s a mistake.

We haven't done that.

I think we’ve strengthened all over the pitch.

I think our problem now will be finding the best 11 to deal with it seeing as we have brought in so many new players.

It may take a few games to do that, although the first 3 games are an ideal induction to it.
 
I can't see us doing much different to last season the difference is we will have better players on the pitch and on the bench. I think Norwich have been very naive not to strengthen their defence which was a problem for them in the championship, they will not outscore teams so easy in this league. I can see Norwich after 8-10 games returning to type with total shithousing like they did the season before last.
 



Norwich were always dicing with death by not spending money. Yes they scored goals last season but were not good defensively. We were good at the back & have strengthened all areas. We will be fine,we have the best manager out of all 92 league teams from last season-remember?? I trust CW to keep us up comfortably & he will.
 
Ill never get behind the idea of a "flat three" until it actually shows itself as actually making us "more solid" and helping us get more than the odd result.

Spot on - I had the same thoughts only this morning .

Norwich 's success last season was largely as a result of the number of late goals they scored , often against weaker teams . That's not going to happen in the Prem and they will obviously concede even more than the 57 they let in last year .

Put these two things together and you have the perfect recipe for relegation and they are my clear favourites for that dubious honour .

Trent doesnt track his man well. A few times lewis ran past him off the ball and trent didnt bother covering, got caught out a few times

After the match Sky explained that they are playing Msn City and Chelsea very soon and they asked Farke if he’ll change his tactics and play more defensive.

Farke actually said he would play positive attacking football regardless of the opposition.
He said he’s coached them to play one way and wants to stick to his principles and he’s told his players to enjoy themselves and play with freedom.
Sky said this might help them score but won’t it mean they concede plenty of goals too?
Farke said he just needs the defence to play better and not make little mistakes which will get punished in the PL.
I think he’s been told he’s gauranteed to remain in the job even if they are relegated, so there’s not that much pressure on the NC manager.
The Norwich fans seem to be OK with relegation too and would rather them keep playing open attacking football.

Farke’s position is safe no matter what.
Listening to Norwich fans they’re quite relaxed about this season, they sound a bit like Brentford fans...more interested in their style of play rather than the result.
The worse that can happen is they have Farke trying to get them promoted again from the Championship and they should have PL money left to help him.
 
Learnt plenty about Norwich tonight, forget what Farke said in the post match about loving his team, he looked very worried at both half time and full time and for good reason because they look weak as piss defensively.

Pretty much every team in the championship was able to score 2 or 3 goals in a game against Norwich last season, so to play just as open and with the same poor defenders in the Prem is simply naive and borderline obnoxious. Liverpool never had to get out of 2nd gear tonight.

They did seemingly well going forward at times tonight, but
1. Liverpool were also incredibly slack defensively and never had to get out of 2nd gear going forward.
2. Even in terms of attacking play, Norwich both last season and tonight were never at the same level as Wolves who strolled their way through most games when they pissed the league.

The same team that conceded plenty against championship teams is going to get pasted against teams that are just as good as them going forward (including us), but can actually defend.

Can't say they'll definitely go down, but I thoroughly expect us to finish above them
 
Very much agree Reece. Farke did seem stunned.

The problem with Norwich is that they are likely to concede at least 1 or 2 goals every match
But this time they won’t be able to outscore the opposition. They do play an open slick passing style though which is good to watch.
However the fact that they’ve spent £1.3 million on players is unbelievably negligent by their board,
with no ambition being shown then one could argue that they really deserve to be relegated.
 
Norwich play every match like that they stay up the score flattered Liverpool Norwich looked a threat

10 times Liverpool scored 4 or more goals against teams at home last year, and I bet the majority of teams Parked the bus.

Norwich came and had a go and looked good I would rather us do that tomorrow for example than sit back and park the bus
