Cotterill

better than not having at all IMO :D

Blackwell still hopes to make at least one breakthrough before United start training at the end of the month.

Cotterill, signed on loan by Bryan Robson, was instrumental in lifting United from mid-table obscurity to within touching distance of the top six and has expressed his interest in a permanent move to United.

Wigan's insistence on recouping most, if not all, of the £2m fee he commanded after leaving Bristol City in 2006 has complicated negotiations. However, United could re-sign Cotterill on a season long loan.

SHEFFIELD United are awaiting a response from Wigan Athletic as the war of attrition for David Cotterill's services enters a critical phase.
The Wales international winger is now Kevin Blackwell's top priority in the transfer market following the arrival of Greg Halford and Sun Jihai last week.

Cotterill, who enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Bramall Lane last season, is understood to have indicated his desire to return to South Yorkshire during exploratory talks between all three parties earlier this summer.

Having admitted his squad would benefit from an injection of width and pace, Blackwell has broken with tradition by speaking openly about his determination to secure Cotterill on a permanent basis next term.

But the exact details of the deal being discussed remain a closely guarded secret as the United manager looks to apply the finishing touches to his promotion blueprint before the Championship curtain-raiser at Birmingham City on August 9.

However, it would appear that Blackwell has submitted what he regards as being a realistic offer for Steve Bruce.

Although his respect for footballing protocol prevents Blackwell from talking about the specifics of those discussions, he has warned he will refuse to be held to ransom by clubs looking to exploit United's Premier League ambitions.

"I know who I want," Blackwell said. "And I also know what I think they are worth."

Meanwhile, David Carney's attempts to establish himself in United's starting line-up have been complicated further by the addition of two more friendly fixtures to Australia's calendar.

Blacky's sounds like hes being sutbborn in a manner, i really hope we get him :)

thing is wigan are spending and need the money. they will hold out for as much as possible. so i think blackwell's trying to keep price down

they want 2 million and we are offering around 1.5

come on Bruce, dont be a tight ass ;)

I think we'll get him. They are just trying to get back what they bought him for, but realisitically he shouldn't be worth as much as the original price now because of his lack of appearences for the first team at Wigan.

Im going for 1.5mill & 500K on Promotion.

Not convinced you're wrong. They did say a while back that they wanted to keep him, and given that they'll struggle again next season, I can understand why they'd hold out for a price.

He'll be training with them, not us for a start.

Blades continue Cotterill chase

Cotterill is believed to be keen on a move to the Blades

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell has said he is hopeful of agreeing a deal to sign Wigan winger David Cotterill.

The Welshman made 16 appearances whilst on loan at Bramall Lane last season.

Blackwell told BBC Radio Sheffield: "Cotterill has made it quite clear that he wants to come back and we are in negotiations with Wigan.

"I am hopeful, but in football you can never say it will definitely happen until the deal is completed."

Meanwhile, the Blades will start their pre-season games on Monday against their Hungarian sister club Ferencvaros.

Glad they are still pushing this deal but wish they would meet the bl**dy asking price and get the lad in so he can have some pre-season with the rest of the squad.
We need this bloke to supply the ammo for BT & Sharp/Hulse/Webber/Stead to get the goals. Another decent winger wouldn't be a bad idea either - Martin or Halmosi (or has he signed for WBA/Hull now?) because I don't think Keef is going to do the biz next season.

Someone has posted on one of the other forums that the 'problem' is a 'sell on' fee that Bristol have on the original deal. I can't find anything on the web that gives that level of detail on the original transfer but this could have a ring of truth to it as an issue for Wigan (although I have always understood sell-on percentages to only apply to any profit is made on a player, not when a player is sold for the same or less)

With the war of attrition for Wigan's David Cotterill showing no signs of abating, Blackwell's need for a solution to United's most challenging problem has been intensified by plc chairman Kevin McCabe's revelation that league position is the only barometer of success.

For god sake, pay the fucking price they want

EXACTLY.

If we end up losing Cotterill to another club because of penny pinching then i think alot of people will get angry.

I think that they will be messing about with Transfer fee+Bristols sell on fee+Cotterill's wages=? type maths, it may be down to Cotterill's weekly demands in the end.

I won't, as useful as he'd be, I'd rather us not be a club thats held to ransom with over inflated valuations.

To get a player of his quality you would have to pay the kind of money they may be asking. Which is probably what they paid.
Blackwell says we need this type of player. yet doesnt seem to want to pay the money.

Well i will agree with you that i will be highly annoyed, he was one of the only players to run at players, not sideways, and like it or not, he was one of the key factors to us doing well towards the end of the season, nice to know weve got keef who can still reach the first defender with his crossing eh boys

However David Cotterill, one name definitely on Blackwell's radar, is expected to try and secure his release from Wigan Athletic - possibly on loan - when United return to England following Saturday's friendly against Dutch second division side Helmond Sport.

"We'll have to see what happens," Blackwell added. "We'll be speaking to Wigan again shortly and it's a case of seeing what transpires."

Despite intimating that Cotterill can leave, Steve Bruce, Blackwell's counterpart at the JJB Stadium, is playing hardball in his bid to recoup most of the £2m fee it cost to sign the Wales winger from Bristol City in August 2006.

Seeing a pattern here

Earlier somebody predicted that Cots was going in Jan (1 Million was the quote), seems at least that the going bit might be true if Swansea get their way, but only as a loan. A few games in a row would be good for him.

On the Newsnow website.

Given that Blackwell is bleating about squad size and the lack of experienced players, letting him go would be both frustrating and puzzling, to say the least.

I would assume some loans deals would firm up in Jan and we would decide on necessary additions. The early rumour was that we planned to sell Cots - I believe somewhere on here somebody claimed to have 'sources' - personally I do rate him but he often seems at a loss what to do.

Cotterill is the biggest ditherer on the pitch.
That may be Blackwell's fault or it my be his own fault.
One of them must go.

I firmly believe he's one of not many bright sparks in our squad with the ability to change a game and offer an element of danger to our build up play. If it's our choice to get rid it'll be another example of a seemingly decent player who is unable to fulfil his potential under Blackwell's reign.

Not only that, but a player whom Blackwell himself signed.
