Is it because we’re on a 3 day week and there’s going to be power cuts? I seem to recall that being a reason once before, when we played mid afternoon on a Wednesday and half of our school wagged it to go and watch!

Our last 5 home games of the 2016/17 season were on five different days of the week: Charlton (Sat), Millwall (Tue), Coventry (Wed), Bradford (Easter Monday) and Chesterfield (Sunday). Think that must be some sort of record.

We had a decent chance of being promoted that night too if Fleetwood lost.

Of course, Fleetwood won by 3-0 or so and we had to wait till the Satdi at Northampton. Well worth it though!

I was dead envious because I daren't wag school. I never did it once. I had to have 100% attendance record and a minimum of “good” for conduct.

I once got a “satisfactory” for conduct and me fatha blew his top at me! Threatened to stop me going t’Lane. I never misbehaved after that.

This reminds me of a conversation which I overheard which would have been totally unintelligible to people who knew nothing about Sheffield or English football.

" Why are we playing on Wednesday" ?

" Because Wednesday played on Sunday ".

Makes perfect sense to us, but imagine if you were a foreign visitor to our fair shores, you might think we are not all there.

I wasnt at that match in February 1974 (school) but was at the 1-0 win against the same team in March 1975. We had an indirect free kick inside the box at the Lane End. All Wolves players were on the line, the free kick was rolled to Woody who blasted it against the wall. Colquhoun was the first to receive the rebound, pushed the ball past a Wolves player who was trying to close him down, and blasted the ball into the roof of the net.

Here is how a newspaper report described Woody's goal in February 1974

GOAL - v Wolves (h) 5.2.74. Garbett's cross, intended for Salmons, was put well beyond Pierce's reach but Woodward quickly seized the ball and scored from an acute angle with a typically thunderous shot.
