Here's one for ya to investigate.

My Dad was telling me about when he was a lad and his old man took him to the Lane. He was telling me about a striker at the time who was amazing. His name was Doc Pace...

I know you yound en's are good at scouring the net for info...so could ya please see what you can dig up on this Blades legend?
 



im sure one of the oldies will be around soon to tell you first hand ;)

"Doc" Pace was one of United's most successful and popular centre forwards. He certainly wasn't big, but had first class awareness in the penalty area and timed his runs to perfection, finishing well with both feet and with splendid headers.

DOB: 11.03.1932 - 1989
POB: Bloxwich
Signed: 1957 from Aston Villa

Made 302 league and cup appearences scoring 175 goals before being sold to Notts County.

Wow! That’s better than a goal every 2 games! Anyone ever had a better goals to games ratio than that?

Think Billy Sharp in terms of size, goal poaching ability and general all-round play but add to that someone who could head a ball like Ronaldo.
 
He didn't look like a centre-forward, and there was no obvious single attribute that made him outstanding, but he proved to be a wonderful signing for next to nothing. He was good at finding space, and really good at heading the ball and timing his jumps. I remember once seeing a ball suspended from the ceiling under the BL stand when autograph hunting, and being told that Doc Pace used it for heading practice; I was probably 14 at the time, and couldn't reach it with my hands. He also had a good, accurate shot, especially with his left foot. And though not a powerful physical presence, he was very astute; at Villa, he crept up behind their keeper, Sims, who was bouncing the ball, stuck out his foot so that the ball hit it and rolled to a Utd player (Hartle?) who scored.
 
He often got criticised by supporters as he did not add much to general play - but then he scored and again and again.........….

When he retired he opened a newsagents shop on Abbeydale Road with Gerry Summers.
 
Very brave player, he suffered back problems but still played in womens corsets to get through the game for the sake of the team. Brilliant header of the ball for a player of his size and always let his marker know he'd been in a game.

If we're only including his latest spell with the club, the great Billy Sharp has an impressive 64 in 124. As did Beattie in his 1st spell (34/62). They're the only 2 in my lifetime (that have played a meaningful number of games) as far as I know.

As for other football, Sergio Aguero has the best ever PL ratio of 107 goals in 154 games.

Arthur Brown scored 100 goals in 178 first division games was very impressive too. He played for us between 1902 to 1908. It was much harder to score goals before the offside rules were changed in 1925. Many defenders were unable to cope with the change of offside rules and "disappeared" from league football soon after 1925. That is why many goalscoring records were broken in the seasons 1925-26, 1926-27, 1927-28 seasons

The offside rule that was changed in 1925? Yes, a bit. A Blade (who is a steward at South Yorkshire football matches) is related to George Camsell who scored 59 league goals for Middlesborough in the 1926-27 season.

The shop 'Summers and Pace' was (I think) where there is now a gentleman's barbers (used to be called Ciccarrellis). I remember the shop being a sports shop rather than a newsagent.

I think Hagan and Brook had a newsagents maybe somewhere in the Meersbrook area.

Thanks for that. I have that photo in a scrapbook, and was going to try and post it. 6 defenders, but Pace has lost his marker. I was standing not far behind the photographer - it is moments like that that convince me that behind the goal is the place to be. Is there a reason someone standing on the terrace appears to be circled?

He once scored a goal with his nose !
Playing against Ipswich ( I think!);he was lylying on the turf near the goal line the ball came across and he lifted his head and deflected the ball Into the net with his nose at Bramall lane end.I was a kid at the ttime and used to stand behind the goal behind the white painted metal railings.
He was brave as a Lyon.
