However if that's where we are, and risking the wrath of the Sharpettes, he'd be a decent replacement for Billy. :0

Would he really be though? Should a player that’s scored 10 in 38 starts this season be replacing the player that has scored 12 in 26 starts at the same level? Gregory is 3 years younger, but viewing both yesterday I didn’t see anything that would be added over what Sharp provides. Weren’t we quoted a 7-figure sum for Gregory when he was still a L1 player? Even in his last year I doubt he’ll come cheaply. I’m absolutely fine with Sharp being replaced if we’re actually looking to improve on what he currently provides. Gregory doesn’t fit that, and certainly doesn’t fit the rhetoric that Wilder has been highlighting on the need to improve the quality in that area of the pitch.

I think there’s better options that are ‘get-able’ higher up the champ goal scoring rankings that could fill a similar role - Grabban, Waghorn and Matt Smith have all scored more than Gregory this year. I also think Chris Martin or Sam Winnall could be good additions.
However, I’d be exploring the loan market for some pace and movement...someone in the mould of Demarai Grey at Leicester would be ideal...young McBurnie at a struggling Barnsley looks a handful as well - always dragging centre backs out of position

He's a decent Champ player with no sell on value. Fair enough if that's where our budget lies but if he costs £500k I'd rather look elsewhere

Grabban is on £30k a week. Waghorn would cost £1m and will be on at least £20k a week.

The thing is CB, if Evans, Hanson & CD were moved on and Gregory brought in. It's an improvement. It has to be. He is younger & better than them. Wilson goes back to Man U and we bring in someone like Nmecha from Man City (possibly missed the boat on McBurnie). The serious discussions & serious money needs to be centred around Leon & Billy and their roles next season. Those two roles, the starting pair so to speak, near enough defines what we do next season as a club. Get it right and we're top 6 (and i'm £100 down :) ), get it wrong and we're sat between 9th & 13th being no better than 'competitive'.

If Gregory can go on a free transfer it would be a no brainer to sign him and we would sign him.

But I think they have the option to extend for a year, and if he'd cost over £1m we couldn't really justify it.

In my opinion, what we need is a faster version of Leon, because to me he is close to the ideal modern striker, big, tall, strong, eye for goal. Even JOC, big lad that he is, looks average stood next to Clarke. Leon's age means he is never going to be the fastest on the pitch (although he is no slouch), so it is just the blistering pace he lacks.

Gregory is a good all rounder, Sharp just an out an our goal scorer.

If you want proven champ forwards, you have to pay the market rate...I would be surprised if you could get Waghorn for 1m.
If not, then we’ll have to take a punt on unproven potential from the lower leagues.

Yep, just a goal scorer, who also can pass, cross, link play, and lead a team, as all evidenced at times he’s played this season. But other than those things, just a goal scorer.

Right, and now he’s spent a year performing well in the Championship and got a good goal return in a bang average Ipswich team...you don’t think his price will have gone up a bit in the current market?

You're more than likely right, they got £750k for Keiffer Moore.

His value is a funny one to gauge, tbh. Ipswich were rumoured to have paid £400k for Waghorn. Rangers circulated his name to English clubs and there weren't many takers. He's 28, entering the last year of his contract and other than this season, his career to date has been hit & miss.

To be honest, I don’t think there’s much value for money to be had from purchases within our division. I’d much rather we explore the options available in the lower leagues or foreign market...but these players are unproven and often require time to acclimatise. I’m also not a fan of the loan market...borrowing players from richer, better teams seems morally dubious and only encourages the stock-piling of young talent.

I can't think of a Championship club that doesn't have to consider loaning players. I take your point about the potential for contributing to 'stock-piling' players at the wealthiest clubs, but given our financial position we need to loan players. There's little we can do to change whatever moral climate exists within professional football, but the commitment to SUFC's well-being is the single most important thing in helping us to improve and progress.

We've seen both sides of this season's loans, firstly the signing of Jamal Blackman. JB has been exceptional for the Blades, and talk of attempting to sign him permanently should be considered a priority for United. As for James Wilson, well it's goes to show that no matter who your parent club are you still need to impress at this level, and sadly Wilson has contributed very little.

No, I’m fully aware that the loan system is part of today’s game and we’d be putting ourselves at a massive disadvantage if we didn’t explore the opportunities it presents. Just don’t like the impact it has on the wider game and how it helps to maintain the current hierarchy. But that’s a problem for the governing bodies to explore (if they’re interested)

Which is a completely different question. If any professional sports body is self-regulating therein lies the problem. It was clear that Blatter was a self-serving Baron who dispensed favour if it benefited him. Similarly, Platini (a once great player) was sucked into the murky swamp that stains any body that chooses to consider themselves above those it seeks to serve.

If you want value for money from this league then Sammy Ameobi on a free transfer is about as good as it gets.

David McGoldrick is also out of contract and would be a good free transfer.

We won't have to spend a fortune to revamp our strikeforce. There are always good affordable players out there.

Yes, you’re right. I know the problems with the loan system are only a drop in the ocean of the morally bankrupt and corrupt world of modern professional football and the individuals and organisations who run it.

I dont see that LG would add anything additonal to what we have already got. We need a bit of power and pace upfront.

Ps I dont agree with some posters that Clayton has been terrible. He has chipped in with a few vital goals. Was never meant to be game-changing signing. So for £50K he's done OK.
Agreed.

Clayton has scored 5 in 8 starts and Gregory has scored 10 in 38 starts this season, I know who I’d prefer for the respective fees for both of them.

Clayton has more than repaid his transfer fee.

I wouldnt want Gregory even on a free. I watched his game very closely yesterday seeing as he’s been one that we were rumoured to be interested in. Not impressed at all tbh.

Lee is a good lad and I'd like to see him at BDTBL.

People moaning about fees should moan to the academy who binned him off when he was 16.

I don’t think many are moaning about the fees Nade, their point is we won’t be able to afford the fee if he signs a contract extension meaning he’d require one, with what’s going on upstairs.

This is why Millwall are doing so well this season.

You lot are looking at the 'stats' - which I blame American sports for.

When actually, Gregory is key to our play - because of all the stuff he does off the ball. His work-rate and movement have created so many opportunities for others (Saville has scored 9 & Wallace 5 from midfield thanks in many ways to Gregory's work).

To be fair he looked leggy Saturday - been a gruelling few weeks & he is getting kicked a lot. But, is if worth his weight in gold (probably more at current prices) for us.

He is a very good player, he battles like no-one else his size, he tries to bully centre halves and they never get a free header. He runs in behind a lot and his link up play is good.

This I believe is our issue, we can lose Billy's goals to get a better all rounder? But our issue seems to be scoring goals when on top? Gregory had a half chance, but our strikers have 3/4

Fortunately for you, the inept ref missed most of the stuff he did 'off the ball'.

I thought your midfield was great, very competitive and forcing us to play a different game. Sadly Gregory and Morrision got away with a lot of dodgy stuff off the ball too.

The ref missed the few bad fouls in the game and some of the free kicks he did give (to both sides) were pathetic. We even got a corner when the ball came off Leon. The linesman in front of the South Stand was even worse. He only ever unstitched his flag from his sock, AFTER the ref had called a decision.

Par for the course with the officials this season. Foul throws never given, time wasting never penalised and any man who hits the deck in a tackle MUST have been 'fouled'.

It is really pissing me off that these clowns are no better than the wankers we had last season.

I see Morison is in their local press moaning about the stuff we were doing off-the-ball – what an absolute hypocrite!

I thought he looked a handful and caused our defence problems on and off the ball, didn't realise until half time who he was, unlike Leon who didn't hassle and challenge for 50/50 balls enough for me when it's one of 3 'cup finals' we needed 3 points from
