Just came across it whilst going through videos at work, it was a bit before my time, anyone remember much?

3 mins 34 seconds in

You won’t see another like it.

It’s banned.

Interesting, so you aren't allowed to deliberately throw the ball at an opponent for a deflection from a throw in?

Strange if so really, especially considering players kick/smash the ball against eachother when they are trying to win a corner often

Certainly not a freak goal. Saunders new exactly what he was doing and clearly had a good grasp of the laws of the game.

I was stood more or less behind him on the terrace when he did it and it took me a couple of seconds to understand what he had done.

I remember the goal well.
It wasn't freaky. Saunders saw the opportunity and took his goal well. The keeper probably felt a bit of a twat afterwards. I've not seen players try it since?. Utb

Saw it from the Kop and still my favourite goal of all time. What it doesn't show is that the Port Vale goalie was trying to kick it into Row Z and failed. There was no-one else within 30 yards so he couldn't throw it to a team mate. He even slowed down tempting the goalie to run off. And then to score from that position - wonderful.

I was sat near the front of John Street stand that day. Dellas flicked a pass from the halfway line and at first Saunders thought it was a fluffed pass that was going out of play, he showed despair on his face and dropped his shoulders, but then quickly realised that Dellas had spun the ball using the outside of his right foot and the ball was still in play. Saunders made a recovert to chase after the ball but Musselwhite (the keeper) got to the ball first and now you see the rest

Yep I saw it. Couldn't quite believe what we had seen......but a goal is a goal and we celebrated accordingly

Next instinctive 'clever striker's goal at the Lane, would be Cresswell at the Kop end. A classic 'It's behind you' goal.

He'd run off the pitch but ran back on as the keeper rolled the ball. He kicked it clear and rolled it in. Even just a mere 5 years on, most miserable bastard refs would be straining to give a foul.

Cresswell, certainly not the most talented forward I've seen, but bloody hell, fair play to him for running those trotters off.

Eat your heart out Leslie Welch . ( For members of a certain age )

I had been on a break prior to this game due to finances, and this was my first game back, got ticks for bramall lane upper and had a season ticket ever since, thanks deano!

I seem to recall reading about a rule change after the Deano goal, to stop such a thing happening again, something along the lines of unsporting behaviour?

Great goal, probably the cleverest I’ve seen. It was made “unsporting behaviour” or “ungentlemanly conduct” at the end of that season I think.

Mentioned this a few times on here but here I go again :D
As the ball went out of play my mate and me had this conversation
Kev - "Throw it off the keeper!!"
Me - "Shut up Kev as thought he'd do th........YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!"
:D
