The usual footballer platitudes that was.

Facts are he spoke to Wilder about a move up North, and wanted to come, Charlton wouldn`t sell, and he got a nice pay rise and new deal out of it.
He now has the chance for another signing on fee, another pay rise, and will more than likely say its `a dream come true` to join us.

We are interested still, and I`m guessing so is he.

All said and done, he`s a great talent, forget age, he came into the game late, and has got better and better, don`t think he has peaked yet.
Can create, great at dead balls, able to ping one in the top corner from 25 yards, and a fantastic attitude.

A definite yes from me!

All of us would do the same if we were in their position , it’s just human nature.

Love how some comments are like we’ve moved on from him without knowing what’s gone on or going on.

There are so many people ITK on here it does make me chuckle.

Didn't Wilder himself say he'd chosen money over moving to us? During the summer before last.

Indifferent to this.

Don’t believe he is as good as Duffy or brooks. That said he has a knack of producing a bit of magic from outside the area which certainly wouldn’t go amiss - it’s arguable he only thing missing in this squad

Can’t help but feel like if he was passionate about being a blade he’d already be here - in which case we should move on

Looking at how he plays he reminds me of an ageing David Brooks,

If he was playing for us at 21 years old we would be raving about him being a premier league player, he runs at opposition players on the wing, can play down the middle and he has a great shot on him. However as Brooks is on a number of BIG clubs wanted list, if we don't go up we will be lacking that flair he brings that maybe Holmes could go some way to replacing without the risk of him being taken off us due to his age.

I would love him at the lane, and with that hair do and skill it could be the closest to a European player that Wilder will ever sign.

Also Wilder likes him, that's enough for me

I never saw anything about him not wanting to join United I only heard that he was happy to stay at Charlton ad didn’t want to leave. Big difference.

He said: “I obviously looked at the Sheffield United offer because you always have to. I was getting offered Championship football, but then I was also happy with probably the best football I’ve played at Charlton.

I want to get the club and my team-mates into the Championship rather than leave to get myself into the Championship.

So I knew everything would work out in the end. I wasn’t trying to leave I was just saying ‘now, reward me’ and they have so fair play to Charlton."

Extracts from his interview afterwards. He heard about the interest, spoke to Wilder but ultimately didn't want to leave Charlton and had no interest in Joining us....Basically used the interest to bag himself a bigger wage at the club.

Times and circumstances change , he probably had a settled family life down there . Not a crime to go for the easy option.

Personally, although I wouldn't say no to Holmes, I would prefer someone who scores more goals and gets on the end of crosses. Bit like the Chelsea lad (Izzy?) who did his knee playing for Charlton, scored 10+ goals for Huddersfield last season. We don't get enough players in the box for the amount of crosses we attempt.

We may have made a quick decision to go for him due to problems signing Kent and the developing situation at Charlton.

But I don't want him here. I want more pace. He'll be 31 in the summer. He's an absolute Essex boy. He used us to get a pay rise. He's clearly indifferent about playing for us. Let him stay in L1. Let him stay in Essex. He'll only want to go back there in the summer if we sign him.
The role he would come in for wouldn't demand pace.
He would come in to cover Duffy and be one to unlock a resilient rearguard.
I'm not certain we need that much more pace than we have now (in this division) - Donaldson, Lavery and Wilson have that - Leonard is no slouch and of course Brooks when he shakes off Glanduar Fever (that may take a couple of months, though).
We dominate teams, more often than not, so we pin them back and try to break them down.
Holmes would be a useful addition for that (even if it is a one or two season effect) with his free kicks and dead ball delivery.
He'd only need pace if we were going to play in a counter attack mode - that isn't going to happen with Wilder in charge - unless we get much further in the cup and come up against a rampant Citeh team. Even then I think he will look to go for it and push them back.

I'd just prefer someone like Ryan Kent. More of a winger who can beat players for pace and provide a counter attack option, whilst also being able to play a free/10 role. Donaldson's shown what pace can do away from home. I'd keep Carruthers too btw.

I get that, while Brooksy is on his sick bed. But when Brooks is back he is surely the option way ahead of Kent.
I'm worried about Carruthers, though. It's as if he is trying too hard and in the process messing up as he is rushing things.
I can see that Wilder has clocked this and that's why he has signed Evans and Leaonard on permanent deals. Both of those push Carruthers further back, in my mind. They will both get game time ahead of Carruthers and either one is capable of holding a place down give an opportunity - something that Carruthers has failed to do. Carruthers also struggles to do a full 90 at the pace and level that will get him a starting shirt.

Me, I like the look of that, me.

It'd mean no Duffy unless we went 4-2-3-1 but I expect him to fade a bit in the second half of the season.

I agree with much of that about Carruthers, and even though Leonard and Evans are different players I could see them playing ahead of him when Duffy's subbed.

One of the reasons I'd keep him though is to also cover the deeper/Fleck position. He played there for MK Dons and looked good there in the first half at Ipswich.

I'd be backing Brooks and Kent (hopefully) to cover/replace Duffy but would keep Carruthers there as insurance.

NO DUFFY!

NO DUFFY!

Wash your bloody mouth out!

Good grief, man.

(I reckon Evans has been brought in to cover that deeper role, if required)

United seem to be accumulating central midfielders who are more defensively minded, and being linked with attacking midfielders who are blessed with pace. This all indicates a switch to a more counter attacking style. At least we'll have the tactical flexibility to employ this tactic now. The three in midfield would become a defensive block, and the two behind the striker would have limited defensive responsibilities - unlike our current attacking players. We lack pacy attacking midfield options (still) and lacked defensive midfield options until the signings of Leonard and Evans. The signing of Kent would indicate a shift in this direction. Personally, I'd press at home, and counter attack away (particularly against the better sides). After saying all that, I'd see the signing of Holmes as competition for Duffy, as the guy is not blessed with pace.

We still need that little bit extra qualityim the attacking third when the opposition come to the Lane and park the bus e.g Bolton after they went 1 nil up. At those times with Utd trying to score the perfect goal and often taking one too many touches, and allowing the opposition to funnel back into position whilst we are a bit slow to get it to the creative lads, we have struggled. We also suffer sometimes from lack of decent crosses into the box for the likes of Sharp to get on the end of. So is like to see either another number 10 to (we are a bit stuffed creatively if Duffys not at the races that day) Or we need another winger. Ideally a player who could do both. Kent sounds like he could do that and I think Holmes probably could too.

I think we would be a very dangerous team to play if we can just get the right extra really creative player. Problem is they usually cost a bit of money to get. Hopefully Wilder can pull another Rabbit out of the hat.
