Heard far too many blades fans saying we need to be spending big money this January in order for us to have a chance at promotion. I can see why people have a knee jerk reaction to our position and think that would give us a decent chance of going up - I honestly think these fans need to be careful what they wish for and believe in the current McCabe and Tufty approach. I'd just ask these fans to bear a few things in mind :-

1. Listen to the piggys squealing at Hillsborough after Burton --- still in shock that multi million pound signings aren't producing the performances their price tags should warrant. They are now left with an old squad on overinflated wages - players that they won't be able to shift on. This is causing such bitterness amongst the fans towards the players, that's the last thing we want. We've finally got rid of our dead wood in the likes of Hammond etc. - do we really want to makes those mistakes again? Wednesday aren't the exception either, look at how much the likes of Boro have spent on half decent Championship players and they can't get into the playoffs.

2. Noone comes cheap in 2018 & Wilder likes british players that see our club as a step up. I think we'd be breaking our existing recruitment model if we were to pinch a fellow championship player for £1.5mill +. Realistically these players are going to want more money than our current squad are on and we need to appreciate what impact these might have on the existing players that are doing extremely well for us. Taking a gamble on a few younger/raw players isn't a gamble when one or two come off. Sell on values in the Championship are huge at the minute and will only rise as more premier league money filters down.

3. You only had to see that video last deadline day for how ridiculous things are at the minute in the transfer market - greedy agents holding out til the final minutes to try and capitalise on panicking managers paying over the odds for players. We need to be steady and keep what we are doing. Chris to pick the right characters for the club, do his background checks and stick to his guns on a price. There is no one in that squad that he has significantly overpaid for that will be worth a fraction of what he paid. That's a testament to his recruitment over the last 18 months.

4. You only need to look at Huddersfield to see what can be achieved with limited resources and a top manager. Just BELIEVE! Even if it doesn't happen in the immediate future we have got a special man in charge at the minute who will make the difference and gradually tweaks things to get us where we want to be. Let's playoff the fact we can be underdogs in the division - it makes it all that bit sweeter when things come off. This is still a step up for Tufty and it might take him a few bites at the cherry to get it right in this division - we all need to remember that.

I think we should all be delighted if we lose no one and bring in 2 or 3 key astute signings this window. Let's just look forward to the Derby and the other big games this month rather than moaning on the transfer forum everyday about McCabe not forking out the big bucks. This is the happiest I've been as a fan since we went up to the Prem. and long may it continue! UTB

If we could spend big then im sure CW would be happy to spend it. The reality is that we dont have a billionaire bank rolling is so we will not be.

I hope Dele Ali breaks his own leg. Just a thought.

Wolves are proving it's exactly the way to do it.

The difference is, we don't have any money so are following a totally different strategy. Blades fans saying stupidly generic things like "back the manager" and "spend some money" etc, really haven't been paying attention...

Wilder will add one or two players from Leagues One & Two for undisclosed fees and McCabe will get trolled and told to sell up - when actually it's all part of a wider strategy...

Well said. I would just add: especially not in January. The chances of big spending in January working out well are slim.

Not convinced misen. They are ok, and been lucky not to have lost their main man. If we’d kept Coutts we would be pushing them IMHO.
I suspect their are several clubs with wage bills similar if not more than Wolves. What they did was get a good manager.

Huddersfield did £10million on Mooy, be happy with that level of spending :)
they spent that this summer they had him on loan last season I believe the most they'd spent last season was a million or 2 for kachunga

Couldn’t be arsed to read that monster post!

My response is Man City and Wolves, spent shit loads and both top.

Birmingham also spent shitloads and they are bottom (dependant on tonight’s result).

Everyone has a decent point, it’s picking the happy medium.
So far Wilder has a pretty good record at everything he touches, so I’d trust Wilders judgement.

He tends to want hungry players making a step up with something to prove.
He also prefers players that actually want to join the club.

Wasn't he on loan, and signed after promotion to the Premier League?

Yep £8,000,000 according to my source (soccerbase), this looks like a loan with a deal in place price fixed dependent on promotion (yes I'm guessing), that would work for me.

That would surely be a tough deal to make. You're more likely to end up with a Jordan Rhodes millstone if you try it in January.

Very difficult not to have total respect for how Wolves are going about things this season.

They go & cope with the pressure of being top by battering yet another very good side this evening. They really are away & gone now.

Just had a check & found out that, at this stage of the season, they're NINE points better off than what they were when they strolled to the Division Three title four seasons ago!

But, like has been said, they're hardly the only big buck merchants in the division this season. WTF's happened to the rest of the big spenders?! - where's their guaranteed promotion?!

P.S. Great O/P. Totally agree - let's keep building & doing it properly.

It's not just the money with Wolves, it's the Mendes connection that has allowed them to bring in players who never would've come to the West Midlands otherwise, regardless of the cash on offer. It smells a bit fishy to me, honestly, but credit to them for taking their advantage and making it pay. As others have noted, plenty of teams have wasted big money and gone nowhere.

As for us, it's not about massive spending, but if we spend nowt or shop in the bargain basement and then narrowly miss out on promotion or the plays offs, it will be very frustrating as we've put ourselves in a strong position in a fairly topsy-turvy division.

No big dough available so better to a buy one or two who would walk straight into the first 11 rather than twice as many squad players for the bench as being rumoured at present.
We have too many mediocre players in a big squad, check out our subs bench in recent matches and ask how many of those are worthy first team starters are therein lies the problem. Too many of mediocre quality and too few that deserve to start and can make a difference.
We can only have 11 on the pitch.

We've done that already, Horsfield and Hendrie spring to mind and Hammond - never sign anybody whose name begins with 'H'!

Hockey was pretty good!

Quite liked Hatton as well.
