In The Name Of God Wilder

So the rest of our defence is so awful that we need someone to guide them through a game?

No they don’t. It’s a myth. Anyway the decision is made. The choice may be Stearman; it may be a newcomer in January. I don’t mind which, preferring as I do my team rather than individual favourites, but it sure as hell won’t be Jake Wright!

Tufty has made his position clear. I agree with him.

Me too.... I can't understand people questioning Wilder

But clearly not true. Quite a few fair minded Blades, not on a Shakey crusade, don’t agree.

Crucially Chris Wilder is one of them. Your boy is finished and should go with great thanks for a job well done. I wish him all the very best at his next club. We’re moving on.

Sadly it’s pretty juvenile. One of their favourites isn’t playing (perhaps he didn’t organise the defence to CW’s satisfaction as Fulham rattled five in, but we ignore that) so any pretender to the Shakey Throne has to be vilified and held responsible for errors he hasn’t made.

I like Jake Wright a lot and admire him hugely. He was an Oxford cast-off going nowhere. Tufty brought him in as cover for JOC and the kingpin who never arrived (Fadz, Webster etc). Jake made himself first choice against th odds and excelled. His race is now run and we need an upgrade. That happens to be my view as well as Wilder’s but it’s his decision, obviously not mine.

It’s entirely possible to acknowledge the admirable Jake Wright and wish him well without vilifying his successor. Those mardy fuckers doing the latter are a disgrace.

Come on Stears, Come on the Blades.

It looked like any concept of martialling defence had also 'moved on" at times earlier.

Not good enough I'm afraid if we have any aspirations of staying around the top 6.

Stearman gave the pen away being clumsy and then was flat footed and tentative for their second.

Other than those, he had a decent game.

IMHO opinion there's not much to choose between him and Wright at the mo but with Stearman there is more upside and I reckon Wilder wants to give him a run to try to extract that upside.

Never mind statistics. What qualities as a player makes Wright better.

Ok.

a) his reading of the game is better

b) his positional sense is better

c) he is a better tackler

d) he organises the back line better

e) he offers better cover to the other two CBs

Just a few to be going on with. If you need any more, just let me know.

Against Fulham?

He’s out. I agree with Tufty. He won’t be seen much at all going forward. There’ll be five ahead of him for selection by the end of January.

Oh....oh the Shakey Jakies...

Oh....oh the Shakey Jakies...

Knees jerk...arms twitch... wah, wah, wah...

Don’t recall it being Wright’s decision to take off half the defence going for a win against Fulham but hey, what do you want the answer to be?

There isn’t much to choose between Wright and Stearman ( and I’m a huge fan of what Jake Wright has achieved at the club)..it’s good to have the competition in that position but ultimately ( next season) we’ll hopefully upgrade.

Well I think we will disagree on all 5 of those points, because I just don't see it.

What's Stearmans record now?

Pinchy? Care to inform us, since you're his fanboy?

Bollocks. Stears did nothing wrong at all, apart from being part of a defence that didn’t cope well at set pieces. He was a victim of a referee error for the pen. No doubt. He played the ball.

This capmpaign will fail. Jake’s had his time. He’s a Wright-Off now. Tufty is moving on. He prefers Stears. No amount of vindictive tantrums from Shakey Jakies will alter that. In fact, I bet Big Ben Heneghan has moved ahead of your boy.

Go watch him at whatever lower league club signs him next season. We’ll manage.

Well done Stears and the boys. Great point despite the ref’s blunder.
Why are people liking this ?

The wing backs were our weakest links today.

A fair point.

Enda was average at best and, as for Baldock, I've never understood the big love in for him on here and after tonight even less so.

Going forward he flatters to deceive and defensively he has been found wanting in a number of matches. Add to that the fact that he is a clapper and pointer and, well, need I say more ?

WHO SAID "so awful"? Not awful but needs organisation. He's just very good at it.

I have to agree, in the last few games I have seen Jake Wright play he looks to be just about above his level. Top League 1 defender and maybe very suited to a defensive Championship side, but he has looked unsteady for me. Stearman is getting better with his performance and is undoubtedly a better replacement and over the next few games I'm sure will start to lead the defence.

Wright always looks calm and assured, does his job, nothing flashy, but he wins his battles and generally helps to keep us tight at the back.

Stearman looks shakey, a bit panicky at times, and struggles to win his battles. Generally we don't look very tight at the back. He can dribble a bit though.

I have to conclude that Jake Wright must be a complete bastard.

Stearman did a lot wrong tonight, if you didn’t see it then you’re his brother.

These are all good points, but it doesn't necessarily mean that one is better than the other. Wright doesn't let us down when called upon, and is great to have around. But I thought Stearman played pretty well tonight, and was unlucky with the penalty. He won the ball cleanly, but their player seemed to just run into him and go down. Soft, but easy for the ref to give.

It was a penalty, he didn't touch the ball..

There was no need for him to do what he did. The kid had his back to goal, there wasn't much threat and Baldock was backing stearman up

Knew there'd be a huge clamour for Wright on here as soon as Stearman gave the pen away. Most predictable thing ever.

Please start with Wright instead of Stearman

Yours

The Blades fans, except Pinchy
Agreed. Haven’t seen anything from Stearman yet which suggests he should keep his place ahead of Wright.

Wright helps galvanise the back 3 and today Stearman was the poorer of the 3. He’s a slow thinker and slower to react
