Can we just enjoy the fact we now have a team that doesn't roll over for the bully boy types? We got out of the physical league playing champagne football.

How many other sides have managed that?!
Quite a few actually.

Hoofing your way up the league ladder gets you only so far.

Which is why clubs like Bolton can't compete for better players, thus relying on big strong powerful players with limited technical ability. Which sees them bottom of the Championship.

And the irony is there are still large pockets of our fans that advocate the "Bolton" way.

It's always been Billy.

A deafening silence on this forum when he's banging them in and then they all turn out with their pitchforks on the rare occasion that he doesn't, fucking ingrates.

Ah well, at least one of us appreciates him.
Make that two. People seem to forget what he contributes in the dressing room too.

Question is, would we have even been playing at this level without Billy last season?

Football has evolved dramatically.

I've seen a lot of 'Premier League years' footy on TV on crap, mud ridden pitches that features two sides just twatting it up the pitch to each others centre halves.

Fortunately, Tufty is evolving at a greater rate.

The football we play is an utter joy to watch at times. Just need more of an end product.

Exactly. Plus we wouldn't even be playing in the 3rd tier without him the season before.
Any other club and he'd be loved by all, instead he's barely acknowledged.

Yawn.

Have you met Pinchy and his army of straw men?

You should join.

That would make two of you.

I'll go and see if I can find a few more from the 'large pockets of our fans' that you mentioned. Hoofers all, eh?

Not sure about that, his own song which gets bellowed from the stands pretty regularly.

Only goes to show that virtually none of them post on here.
Stefan Scougall was very well liked on the terraces, didn't stop him getting dogs abuse on here.

Ah.

Another of the Hendo Higgo Hanson apologists.

You should all get together and form a club.

No doubt Mr and Mrs fickle will be singing his praises if he scores a winner at the Sty, though unlikely to share it on here:confused:

Hanson, yes guilty as charged. A hard working player who helped us up last season.

Hendo and Higdon? Leave it out mate.

I didn't rate either. The former wasn't worth £250k let alone what we spunked and was always looking to fight defenders rather than beat them. The latter was surprisingly useless. Actually I though he did okay on his debut v Bristol City but that sadly was his high water mark.

My apologies.

Just Hanson then :)

I thought this thread was about Stuart Atwell's school day torment. There's no other explanation for a) being a league referee and b) being that anti-football.

So a " I hate Clarke" thread turns into a "poor Billy" weepathon.

Just wait until all those Sharp haters referred to on here pile in. Be blood and snot all over.

In Wilder we trust, unless he subs our captain, then he's David Weir2

I'm one of the few that feels that Billy doesn't offer a great deal during games.

HOWEVER, the guy is a match winner and that can't be taken away from him and for this reason alone, he has to start whenever fit.

I heart Billy, as does my son who's only seen one game but for some bizarre reason runs around the house shouting "Billy Sharp" all the time. He made a specific request on youtube the other day for "Billy Sharp Videos", this is better than the normal "people opening shit toys and talking about them" videos.

He always works hard. The type of striker he is means he needs chances. Doesn't always happen for him no matter how much effort he puts in. The thing is though, we applaud Wilder for being a no nonsense type of guy yet subtly criticise him when he makes a decision he feels the team needs which some don't like.

No one should be immune from being subbed. Unless its injury driven it's a decision made by the professionals based on the best for the team rather than any individual.

Both Sharp and Clarke shouldn't take any criticism last night at Bolton.

Service was pretty poor, especially 2nd half from the midfield - Bolton put us under pressure in terms of territory after half time but had zero class or skill to exploit that territory. They both put in a shift and it was right Billy went off when he did - but the rapturous applause he received was for the fact he put himself about with very little reward.

A more typical game for Billy and Clarke for that matter will be against Norwich who still apparently play football as against the agricultural stuff dished out by Bolton's defenders.

Even if Billy is not scoring himself, the close attention that he gets from opposition players gives our others more chance of scoring. Defenders dare not "ignore him" as he will certainly punish them with his own goal scoring abilities, if given only half a chance.

And my point is that in games like last night, and Boro, Bill may as well sit in the stand.

Have we not learned the lessons of Blackwell ?

Play him to his strengths, or don't bother. It's that simple.

That's a great suggestion if we had a crystal ball to determine whether we're going to be able to play to his strengths ahead of a game. Given how effective he was against Bolton in February it made every sense to start Sharp – it only became apparent in the game itself that this wasn't going to be one where we could get him as involved as we'd have liked. Wilder made it fairly clear in his post-match that we didn't play the way we wanted yesterday – largely in my view down to the Bolton gameplan.

Again. Understand WHY ?

When we play progressive football, moving through the thirds, Sharp is very effective. Scoring assisting and being a great focal point to the attack in that he has a good touch, is able to bring others in to the game with good hold up play, has improved immeasurably with his back to goal, and has a genuinely cute footballing brain. You can see that when surrounded by others of this ilk, he generally flourishes.

Now. As I have consistently said, Sharp has NEVER stood out when played in a direct side, alongside a so called target man, or alongside a player with poor technical ability and shit for footballing brains.

The optimum pairing for Sharp would be Evans. No doubt in my mind. Alas, Ched is struggling with niggles and until this changes, we are unlikely to see this.

As much stick as he has been given, Sinclair could well have been a positive solution. Clever player. Less so Cole, Although very quick which would help.

Donaldson would be better for Sharp than Clarke or Hanson will ever be.

Wilder has it wrong then, as all the decisions are his. Is that what your underlying point is without actually mentioning his name?

I have gone to great lengths to explain why this is so. And why it's likely to continue.

As it stands, I'd be inclined to drop Sharp and give CD, LC and possibly CE (if match fit) a go.

No.

It isn't. If you care to read the post, it was all about optimising Sharp. Nothing more.

I think your searching for something that just isn't there.

Hope that helps.
