I suspect they thought he was OK back up with potential to improve which is what I see him as for us. If they've since signed more CBs though, it could push him further down the pecking order.

Nah, I think It was purely a move to get more money from us for him....

Sensible decision not to let him leave for free when he was playing well before Xmas, we looked like promotion and there was every possibility we'd have been dying to sign him if he kept his form up.

As it happens his form dropped off, he suffered from injury and they are now stuck with a player on their books for another three years - who they will have to pay for that time and don't actually require.

Think we are in a strong position here, we arnt yet desperate and they can't really afford to price him out of a move. Give them a less than £400k take it or leave it offer imo.

With a guaranteed pay day for him and his family.

Where would he be had he a suffered a career ending injury in the second half of last season?

A - sat at home with an insurance payment based on his previous lesser contract.

He'd have been crackers to turn down a new contract with no other guaranteed options in the hope of a better deal elsewhere.

If he's not getting games I'm sure he will address that in due course, but in the meantime his immediate future is nicely secured.

Take the point.

But Couldn't he have signed a pre contact agreement with us/another club at the same time?

Think he can do that 6months before his contract ended? Unless it's for players over 24 or something

And suspect we'd have been keen on jan.

I wouldn't put a figure on it.

I trust Wilder to manage the budget properly and if he wants him he will know what his top line is.

If thats not enough he will look elsewhere but on the other hand if it's more than we mere mortals think, well, his judgement is Infinitely better than mine.

I can't understand why supporters get so wound up about individual player valuations.

We might not have wanted to offer him one?

The consensus on here seems to be that EEL would be a "squad" or "back up" player. I personally think that is right. If the reports of a fee of £2.5 mill (plus substantial wages) are correct it would be ludicrous to pay that much for such a player. I personally wouldn't sign him but I'm not Wilder and he obviously sees that the lad has talent and the potential to be a good Championship player. Given Cw's record on signings who am I to argue? Could he turn out to be the next Harry Maguire - if so £2.5 mill would be a snip but I think if that was the case we would have seen more evidence of that last season.
I am just surprised that CW and the scouting staff have not identified a good prospect from L1 or L2 or another JOC type who could make the step up at a fraction of the cost that apparently EEL would cost.

Yeah, it's all conjecture at this point. Given that he's signed on for wolves.

But think we'd probably have been fairly keen as he was a regular at that point, bit of a cult hero and not least playing well!

Like you say wilder knows his budget - if he wants to sign him he'll offer what's fair and see where that goes. Think we can probably all agree we won't be spending £2.5m on him at any point this summer though - we don't need to be held to ransom for him.

You say they won't cost a fortune, and a combined fee of 'around 1.5m' - what are you basing this on? Are you privy to the negotiations?

Ultimately, what I'm trying to say is; you don't know what their asking prices are, you don't know their wages demands, you don't know the amount of our bids. I think you should exercise a little patience and allow Wilder and the club to conduct their business without having a strop.

Everybody and his dog knows approximately how much it will cost to get these players
£1.5 million gets all three of them

You know it
I know it
So stop arguing about it

He couldn't have left for free. Wolves had an option to extend his contract which they could have taken up.

We've got to trust Wilder with his record of signings (although let's not forget that not all of them worked) but I personally saw enough of EEL to back up what my Wolves mate said when we brought him in i.e. that he was strong in the air but often got pulled out of position and struggled against pace. The one telling point was that he said he wasn't good enough in the Championship but would do a job for us in Div 3. He's recently asked me how well he did because he can't believe we'd want him now we've gone up. Got to say I agree with him. I will lose no sleep at all if we don't sign him and might even sleep better if we don't ;).

Wolves local newspaper expects him to sign soon & going off Wilders recent comments, I reckon he'll be signed up by the end of the week.

Below is the little snippet at the bottom of an article published in the past hour or so.

''Captain Danny Batth, England Under-21 internationals Kortney Hause and Dominic Iorfa, 2015/16 player of the season Matt Doherty and academy graduate Ethan Ebanks-Landell are Wolves' other first-team defenders.

The latter is expected to soon join Sheffield United, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell last season with the Blades winning the League One title.''

Players outside of the FA's jurisdiction (abroad) can sign a pre-contract 6 months before the contract expires.

Players within the country can sign pre contracts with other clubs from this country after the 2nd saturday before the end of the season. Approximately 6 weeks before the window opens.

https://www.expressandstar.com/spor...017/07/04/wolves-hope-for-porto-double-swoop/

"Wolves are targeting Porto defender Willy Boly – as talks to sign his £15m-rated team mate Ruben Neves continue.

Bolo could become the fifth defender to move to Molineux in the space of five weeks, after the captures of Roderick Miranda, Ryan Bennett, Phil Ofosu-Ayeh and Barry Douglas.

The quartet all joined on permanent deals but it's believed a loan move is the most likely option for 26-year-old Boly, a fomer French youth international who was managed by Nuno Espirito Santo last season.

Boly joined Porto last summer from fellow Portuguese side Braga, after starting his career in Auxerre in France where he made 97 league appearances.

The arrival of the 6ft 3in defender would throw into doubt the futures of captain Danny Batth and England Under-21 international Kortney Hause.

If Boly joined Nuno would have six centre halves to choose from, not including Dominic Iorfa, although Ethan Ebanks-Landell is expected to switch to Championship rivals Sheffield United"

I'd actually take any/all three given the chance... the two that played for wolves looked terrible as a two but either of them 'could/ might' fit nicely into a three.

I really hope Ryan Bennett enjoys watching the team he's joined 'going for promotion'... because he certainly won't be starting for them.

Wolves are likely to be near the top though...... of the bottom half.
