Evans was £3m when McCabe bigged up the investment after his signing, but when Evans did poorly in his first two years McCabe would go at lengths to stress that a significant chunk of that was reliant on certain targets being met (assumed to be promotion at the time). Beattie was covered almost entirely with the Jagielka cash. There's no doubt McCabe has invested large amounts of his own money, but he's never been overly free with the cash, save for the post-relegation spending spree – when, ironically, what we had needed was more a careful tweak to the then squad.
