Howard Kendall resigned as United manager to go back to Everton. His first six months in charge he really turned us around, helped by the ingenious signing of Gordon Cowans, one of the best midfielders I've seen at the Lane despite the fact.that he couldn't run! He also brought in Vas Borbokis, our finest wingback and.free kick taker. Yes he left under a shadow, but he should be remembered fondly for his time at Bramall Lane.

I might be wrong, but I thought it was Kendal who signed Borbokis. Hutchinson was a fantastic player on his day, but a little inconsistent. I remember a 3 0 win against Southend where the Southend players couldn't cope with him. Also scored from an indirect free kick against Luton, by blasting against the wall. I can't remember getting John Bailey?

Why

Wasted one of only 3 ? big cash injections since I started supporting 61 years ago. We stuttered through to the Play-Off final without ever looking busy, intense or organised, more individual player qualities saw us get there. We lost the Final to a poor side, yet again. More money, same old shite as far as I was concerned. Manchester Mafia fucked off, back to square one, plenty of mercenaries left with us with no connection or affinity with the club.

I might be wrong, but I thought it was Kendal who signed Borbokis. Hutchinson was a fantastic player on his day, but a little inconsistent. Bailey was signed for the dressing room if my memory serves me right. Kendall brought some good football to the Lane I liked him and but for Hutchinsons injury we would have beaten Palace I think. Away from the ground Kendall was to be found most nights in the Wheatsheaf where he was knocking off someone I know very well.

Twas Spackers that signed the brilliant Borbokis, but correct about how he turned us around. We were at the end of the most productive era iv'e witnessed under Bassett but it was going pear shaped and it needed a new dawn, Kendall did that well. We should have gone up, we were far better than Palace but as usual we didn't turn up on the day, some of the football we played that season was top notch, Fjortoft was prolific, Hutchinson sublime on his day, White direct and powerful and Cowans as a veteran play maker has only been bettered by the exceptional McCall IMO. Veart's goal when beating Arsenal in the cup replay ranks as one of the best nights at the Lane for me, the atmosphere that night was incredible.

Did Ablett bugger off to Birmingham later for more money, then got loads of stick the following season at The Lane in a four all draw ?
Then again it's late, I've been drinking Jaipur and I could be imagining the whole thing....except the shirt...it really is fuckin huge

On the way to the play off final I was told he was often in the Hearts of Oak in Dronfield drinking large amounts of Baileys. I'd been in America for the whole season so only got the odd Green Un to feed off and couldn't believe how pessimistic everyone was going down to Wembley.

On our day under Kendall we played some great football , Cowans & Patterson great centre mid pairing , I thought Spackers built on the back of this and that side is still one of the best I've seen in a Utd shirt , couldn't believe McDonald when McDonald sold Deane & Fjortoft together , I think we were 4th in table 4 points behind Forest with 2 games in hand .. what a total c...t !

It certainly did. I remember the car park protest after a Tuesday night match (QPR or Ipswich I think) when much abuse was given to MacDonald and his cronies. When it started raining we went to the pub though.

My recollection, which may be wrong, is that the original plan was to sell Gareth Taylor. When that prompted a bit of a fan reaction, they went for broke retaining Taylor and selling Deane and Fjortoft in a fit of petulance.
