From yesterday's Times newspaper, found this:

BEST FOOTBALLER
Sir, Bobby Charlton and Paul Gascoigne are rightly revered throughout English football (Matthew Syed, Mar 27, and letter, Mar 29). But in Sheffield the award for the most beautiful player must go to Tony Currie, universally held in awe despite playing for the wrong local side and compounding the error by moving to Leeds. He truly did float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.

Heard stories he was grumpy, unapproachable etc, had the pleasure of meeting him a few months ago and he was a thoroughly nice guy, very engaging, could talk about his career and the blades all day, clearly loves the club and still loves the admiration and love he gets from Blades or all ages.

That's just my personal opinion on anyone who uses the "do you know who is am" line though. :)
 
Saw him at shirecliffe once. Vile, foul mouthed bloke who talks to people like shit, heard it with my own ears.
 
I went to one of those football camps in the 90s that he used to run. It was a keeper one we had the chance to train with either ALAN KELLY or Billy Mercer. Anyways I remember Tony Currie being a terrible bastard.
 
Met him on a ground tour with two of my young daughters about 4 years ago. He was an absolute gent, very passionate abart'Blades and seemed friendly enough. Half way in and after getting side tracked onto pets, he brought us outside to meet his Alsation (he bloodywell loves that dog!). My girls still have his signed postcards in their room.
I can see how people could get rubbed wrong by him, he's old school no nonsense. But that's a plus as far as I care.
 
Met him at the Oxford Utd game this season my son won the comp to launch the new shirt at Donny Airport. As part of the prize we thought we were just getting a VIP in the John St exec area.

Had no idea but we were dining with TC, his wife and John Charles(anyone else remember him?). TC was an absolute gent and looked after us well. I was with my 2 lads (13 and10) and my 81 year old Dad. My Dad gladly told him he watched him score on his debut then when TC made a comment about how hard it would be to decide who was in fact the best player SUFC ever had, - my Dad was happy to tell him what an amazing player Jimmy Hagan was. You had to be there but while T C was a brilliant host I couldn't help thinking he loved his ego well and truly massaged.
 



I worshipped him as a player and I'm sure I'll go to my grave with the belief/knowledge that no other person will ever thrill me as much as Tony Curry did.

Myself and my grandson met him several years ago and he was nothing but kindness itself taking time out and consideration to answer a 6 year olds questions, I also met him during a Sponsors pre-match dinner.

You can only take people as you find them.

Others on this thread have said some bad things about him, as I said, you can only take people as you find them, if you are Blades, you should be aware that you are insulting a lot of your fellow Blades living icon and sullying our memories

No just telling you what I think of him having heard him talk to people. It was a woman he was talking to as well who's done nothing, I heard the entire conversation. I'd say it about Jesus if I'd heard him having a rant. Was disgusting and not how ANYONE should speak to anybody else.

Nobody's perfect. The difference is it's only Blades fans who would openly slag off one of their own legends. I'm sure Bobby Charlton has rubbed a few people up the wrong way but you'll never see Man U fans vilifying him on forums such as this. I'm lost for words sometimes with our lot.
 
As a youth I was on the football in the community program of which TC was the manager of. Spent a brilliant 18 months coaching football to kids and adults and I have to say he was a top bloke. Even though he had no knees left he could still play, remember having a kick about on a pitch in Bradford after a coaching session one day and I was the unfortunate one to go in goal, somehow he managed to keep scoring direct from corners!! Never saw him play at the Lane but it was a pleasure to work with and to get to know the guy, trust me he's a genuine decent bloke.

Absolutely agreed. Just saying what I saw and heard. He was a fabulous footballer no doubt about it but doesn't mean he's a nice person.
 
I met TC and Keith Edwards when they were doing the rounds of the boxes before the league game against Huddersfield when Wilson was Manager.

I found them both brilliant blokes to chat to. No fake, shmooze the customer type stuff just two passionate fans of Sheff Utd.
 
Who cares if he doesn't win any personality contests...For me,it was a privelidge to grow up watching the man play.
Imagine a United player now getting the ball,and a buzz of anticipation going all around the ground that's what it was like...I've never met him apart from getting his and Len Badger's autograph once when I was about 9,and not really interested in meeting players in general to be honest,it's what they do on the pitch for me in a red and white shirt.
