There has been a lot of talk about EEL being the best centre back since- take your pick!

No one ever mentions Gary Cahill and I worry that history will repeat itself

Gary Cahill came to us on loan played brilliantly and we were desperate to sign him but in the end he went to a higher placed club – Bolton

Unfortunately I think we are going to lose EEL either in January or at the end of the season

I hope I am wrong but I feel we need to make alternative plans

Sorry to be such a downer

Cahill may have been good, but the team was still struggling around 16th in the league by the time he left.

EEL is the kind of big ugly defender you need to get out of League 1. Been saying he was the kind of player we've needed for years.
The gap between League 1 and the Championship is growing by the year and I don't think he will hack it up there if we get promoted. His failings will be punished more readily.
Cahill is an international/Premiership regular. Worlds apart

Hmmm.....Cahill was/is a different league to the big man, and I say that loving the guy and what he brings to this team.

Big Ethan isn't in the same place as Cahill was. Unwanted at Villa, a decent premier league side at the time, but still very young. He is unwanted at Wolves, a struggling mid table Championship side.
Ok, he might attract interest from some championship sides, but I tell you now they won't be any bigger or better prospect than us.

Personally speaking, I see the best solution all around is for him to stay on loan for the season. It will give him flexibility and options while improving his stature, and allow us to decide if we want to sign him when we are in the Championship.
IMHO.....I think Wilder will look elsewhere if we get up.

Cahill's just your typical, overhyped, over rated English Premier League defender. Tall, slow, piss poor at reading the game and hugely over protected because he plays for Chelsea. Watch him in international games and he's fucking dire.

EEL's doing OK for us this season, let's see where it ends before we start bigging him up just to knock him down again.

He was making me nervous on Tuesday, I thought he was really poor.

Think he means making him nervous when he was playing as a winger
Because for the last 2 matches EEL had nought to do as a defender.

Also regards the OP, Cahill was far better than EEL when he came in loan, not even close.

Agree he doesn't look that good now
But that season he was with us on loan you could tell he was a future star, looked a class act and far too good for Championship level.

I don't think anyone would knock EEL down. He's currently lower Championship level and might improve or might not. That level is good enough for me in our 1st season back in the Championship.

I think Wilder will want to sign him but no doubt he'll keep an open mind and look at other options.

Agree with Billyblade

EEL is a huge part of the jigsaw to get us out of league 1 and we should do everything to retain him on loan for the full season. If we were to go up however we would probably need to purchase 2 new and better CBs than we currently have, along with around 5 other outfield players. O'Connell might have potential to become a decent championship defender though and is more versatile, so we did well to sign him permanently.

I Thought I was on my own about EBanks . Glad to see there are others. Gary Cahill runs circles around Ebanks. I think O'connell will be better in the Championship than Ebanks.

Agreed. O'Connell is so much better on the ball and will have a better career than Ebanks imo. Ebanks has a bit of cult status atm and his goals are adding to that. Hopefully, we'll keep him until the end of the season on loan. Can't see many championship sides buying him in JTW other than the likes of Rotherham, who are looking like certs to go down anyway.

We will extend the loan. No more at this stage.

Wolves will trigger the extension and sell him in the summer.

Gary Cahill was a lot lot better than EEL.

He wasn't huge with a great beard. He wasn't a cult hero and he didn't score as many. But he was clearly the more gifted defender

EEL will be here til the end of the season. If he isn't then he's replaceable. We might not get another cult hero but defensively he is replaceable

I don’t think any England international can reasonably be called ‘fucking dire’ whilst being spoken of in comparison to league 1 players. Of course it’s all relative and on the world stage, Cahill might fall short. That doesn’t mean he’s not a good premier league defender who stood out in that league for Bolton enough to make Chelsea pay a large sum for his services. Jagielka falls into the same bracket.

You don’t win the things he has by being ‘fucking dire’.

I don’t think we’ll be shopping in such a pool that Ebanks is not good enough to be one of our 4 CBs even if we do go up. If we are promoted, I think Wright and Wilson would be the ones to fall by the wayside to be replaced by 2 experienced championship CBs with EEL and JOC competing with them. At the very worst, he could be to our championship squad what James Wilson is to our current squad.

Cahill was only loaned to us because o Neil didn't want him at another premiership club

We had zero chance of signing him even if we had the money

Eel is good at this level and it's great that the fans love him but lets not get all giddy and piglike
When they had read jhonson they were using the old chuck norriss jokes but with his name insteadc

EEL goes back to Wolves. Fans gutted. Wilder signs Webster. Fans wish it was EEL. Webster makes a mistake. Fans hate Webster. Fans jeer Webster. Webster makes more mistakes.

I don't think that's too crazy a prediction.

I think EEL's cult status shouldn't be dismissed as something that is arbitrary from his ability in our efforts to keep him. All good teams have cult figures, and his status as a cult figure has been a notable part of everything that has been going so well this season. If he goes, it will go. Maybe it'll be replaced and the transition will be seamless, maybe not.

Like I said, he's a typical English Premier League defender, big, slow and fucking crap at international level. Just like it doesn't tale a lot to be seen as 'great' in the modern game, the same applies to average players being lauded as something that they're not.

Cahill was adequate when he played for us, so is EEL. That's all that matters to me, couldn't give two fucks about Cahill to be honest.

Cahill was by far a better footballer and head and shoulders above the rest in the division above.

Gary Cahill:
Premier League
Champions League
Europa League
FA Cup
League Cup
PFA Team of the year (twice)

EEL: dismissed by an average championship club as not good enough, shipped out on loan to L1.

An ridiculous comparison that highlights the existence of delusions in football fans. EEL is fine, he does a job, but he is nothing more than a fairly good L1 defender.

If he gets recalled and/or sold, we could do worse than reach out to Uncle Neil.

He's got about 6 first choice centre backs. I'm sure one could 'do a job' for 4 months.

A fucking stupid OP!

Cahill played well when here, and slipped away because we weren't capable of recognising the quality he brought to the team and being prepared to pay for it.

EEL does a decent job in his partnership with JOC. They're learning together, they've been together for only 4 months, so please don't expect too much too soon.

As for the OP's comment about other posters suggesting that EEL is the best defender since........exactly who are you referring to? Maguire? To be truthful, once Maguire left it wouldn't have taken a great improvement to shore up our defence, but we have dithered and decided not to go for permanent replacements, that is until Wright, JOC, and loanee EEL were signed. Poor, indecisive management was responsible for this situation, and you have to smile to look at how quickly Wilder acted to rectify this situation.

I've a question for the OP; start a thread comparing George Long with Alan Kelly, that should cause a few posters to appreciate the nonsense of such threads. Complete and utter bollocks!
