“Y’know, I remember the 1989/90 season, which began badly and went downhill from there.
But even though we were ultimately relegated we did a memorable double over the Blunts.
Hope, there’s always hope.”

I wonder if they put up a statue about it? Or put a star above that silly bent church badge on the shirts to mark that momentous occasion?

He got the wrong season. It was 1988-9.

I knew the natives were restless but hadn't realised quite how bad it was over there.

Interestingly, in all the years I have been doing this, the only set of fans who seem confused to why I do it have been Barnsley, Donny and now Chesterfield fans. I can only imagine the internet speed is that slow round those parts that they think it takes me hours to compile .

We must not ignore the have nots in our society.

internet? The secret of fire is still prized knowledge in such places.

Can we stop slagging Chesterfield off please, being someone unfortunate enough to having once been brought up round them there parts you're all hurting my feelings terribly :p

It is a weird place to be fair - saying it's stuck in the 70s is far too kind. Can't remember last time I went either - tells you it's own story.

In the late 80's when it was 'de rigeur' for young men to frequent 'nitespots' in blazers, ties and chinos, me and a mate had a night out and decided to go to Chessy for a change of scenery. We ended up in the Aquarius and started attracting a lot of unwelcome interest from the locals. Eventually, one lad came over to us from his gang and we feared the worst... however, his only query was "Are you lads int Army like?".

Blazers? When was this. I don't remember people wearing any kind of jacket on a night out in the late eighties. It was too close to being a coat, the wearing of which being an indication that one was nesh.

Wasn't that the season where we lost to all four of the relegated teams and both Southend and Chessie did the double over us? In fact we managed just one win out of the eight games, Aldershot at home and we drew at home to Gillingham. That's a terrible return, 4 points out of 24....

Nearly right. We beat Gillingham at home too.

By contrast, we only lost once to the other teams in the top 6, losing at Preston. We took 4 points off Wolves, Fulham and Bristol Rovers, and drew twice with Port Vale and beat Preston at home.

There was definitely a period around '87 when the must buy was a blazer from Burtons or such like.

Personally, I don’t consider the game a derby in the traditional sense,

I can happily concur with the view as we have a "proper" derby in all senses of the word. Just wondering what they consider theirs to be. Mansfield? Derby County? I'd have thought we are the closest to them myself (I actually live closer to their ground than BDTBL sadly).
Perhaps it's Barnsley as they share the "too many toes, not enough surnames" characteristics.

Traditionally Mansfield.

Cheers as always Roy

Just out of interest (as I don't follow Chesterfield news) why are they protesting and staying away? Is it lack of investment, buying players etc? Not sure why they have a problem with the management/board and refer to them as "mafia"?
Because although one of them says:

I dislike Sheff Utd for their constant bleating on about how ‘big’ they are. It’s kinda understandable based where they’ve been in the past as opposed to where they are now, but the peaks and troughs of supporting a football club over a long period of time are to be expected.

The rest don't think it applies to them. They've always yo-yoed between the bottom two divisions.
I think the Mafia bit comes from the ex-pig owner and his ex-pig mates running the club.

And Morgan and Wilson's Sheffield connections

Chesterfield fans call Dave Allen, Chris Turner and Chris Morgan the Sheffield Mafia. Dave Allen was OK when he was signing good players and paying for the new ground but now that he has zipped up his wallet he's a bad Deedah. Danny is OK though because he played for "Tahn" in the early 1980s and was the team's best player till Brian Clough took him to Forest and then mysteriously refused to play him in the first team.

Chesterfield's biggest and most bitter rivals are Mansfield. I was at the play off semi final in 1995 when the two teams met and Chesterfield's fans came up with one of my all time favourite terrace chants: You're scabs, and you know you are. They only dislike the Blades when we are in the same division, which, one way or the other, is unlikely still to be the case next season.

“Wonder if internet weirdo ‘Roygbiv’ will put this post comment on his soon to be coming ‘Pre-match view from Chesterfield’ blog?”

He might be a weirdo... but he's our weirdo!
Cheers Roy

I don't know this Roygbiv or have the faintest idea what his monicker is about but I know that he provides us with some excellent insights into how others see us and I really enjoy his posts. If that makes him an internet weirdo let's have more of them!

I actually like the term 'Internet Weirdo". It distinguishes me from your average Joe weirdos

Do you compile these whilst rubbing yourself in Marmite and wearing your nan's underwear? If not, you may as well now - live a little.

I'm glad they're boycotting this one. It means many of us blades who couldn't get tickets for the away end can still go :)
