SUFC youngsters - Who looks the most promising?

Ben Whiteman could be good, played a few games as Centre Mid under Adkins, not many good chances for him to show his ability though.

Agree, Whiteman could do well.

Reed's quite promising and 19 this month.

Calvert-Lewin.

Brooks

Maybe Long should be regarded as a senior pro by now but he's only 22 years old; young for a keeper.

The first 2 I was told about around 4 years ago were Jordan Preston & Reece Hands, poached by Blackburn Rovers, both have had spells in Non league and Scotland, but nowhere near the Rovers first team.
Also, Robbie Cotton who left United for Blackburn around this time - played for England at youth level. No longer playing, as far as I know.

There was a Robbie Cotton at Sheffield fc, don`t know if he is the same player.

If kids just stayed where they are, I bet more of them would make it as professionals. The upheaval that comes with moving academies at a young age probably has quite a big effect on a lot of them, and on top of that the path to the first team or even the reserve team is harder the bigger the club they are at.

Can anyone give any insight on Slater, and any of the other youngsters involved against Grimsby? I hadn't even heard of a few of them

Brecks went to Manchester City at the start of last season.

He'll be U13s this coming season.

I heard we lost two prospects to Man City at the same time, Breckin and a Sodje, I believe the assistance given to help with these moves can sometimes be quite considerable.

Reece Hands from Dinnington, his faamily didn`t move. The lad has had some bad luck with a back problem for a few years now, last time I spoke to his dad he was under a physio and unattached, but not looking good as far as a football career goes

I don't think that's uncommon among prem clubs, I remember a lad who I played against for school about 10 years ago who was in our academy, ended up in Blackburn's academy after they apparently payed to move his family over. Last saw his name pop up on Soccer Saturday scoring for Morton (name escapes me now!)
His name was Reece Hands, had very bad luck with injuries and I think his football career is about done.

Poor lad. Youth players grow up seeing this happen to their teammates, see promising kids whose careers are over before they've started. It's no wonder most jump at the chance to go to a PL club and earn some decent money when it's offered.
That's why I'll never criticise youth team players who leave us for a PL club.

From a very brief glimpse of last nights highlights, looks to be the next Conor Coady
To be honest Sheffielder there are a few genuinely decent players coming through, whether you hate or love the academy.

There are a few names to watch...... Semple, Slater, Cummings, Hallam, Gilmoor are the bunch behind Reed, Whiteman, Brookes, Kelly

Not saying they are next big thing but its interesting to see how they progress.

Even better if they progress whilst we have a winning first team. I am sure you will agree

If we get 2 or 3 who make the first team out of those the academy will be worth while.

Regan Slater will be a first year scholar this season. Centre Mid, great on the ball, feisty, already played u18s and 21s last season.
Great first goal and put a lovely through ball that led to the the own goal

There are a few that should get in out of this crop, but as always there's some that are disappointing - or maybe it's me that can's see what Binnion sees

Don't Think Burton will make it through, not enough goals for a striker. Tends to be a bit greedy & runs out of skill before he gets chance to score

Thought Parkhouse was going to be the one that would come through for us. He had a decent season last year, but has dropped off

Hallam is a lucky lad. Binnion's notorious for having his favourites & this lad's one of them. Doesn't think he has to tackle or press from midfield & when we're up against a strong side he goes missing. Can be good from dead ball, but tends to throw himself on the floor a lot to get them - we could always sell him to Spanish side

Wright is another that's not strong enough. I was surprised that he made it up from U16's. He's losing ground this season

Gilmour is a good lad & we've already got him signed up. He puts a shift in & is consistent although I fear for him cos Slater's coming through & he looks like his star is rising

Slater is one that we really do need to sign up as soon as possible. He's aggressive, skilful & he knows where the net is. If we don't keep hold of this lad he'll come back & bite us in a few years time

Smith is another that come back & bite us if we let him go, but unfortunately he's not a favourite & doesn't get the U23's exposure. I don't know if it's cos he's been here since e was about 8, but he looks like he want to fight for the shirt

Alex Brown (no relation to Brown who played the other night) is another who's been here for about 10 years. He has a sweet left foot from dead ball, but has varying performances. He's very much a confidence player, he's just coming back from injury so don't know how confident he'll be. There's also the spectre of another favourite in Cantrill coming in at left back that may knock his confidence

I've seen Cantrill at left & right back, but his delivery from the right isn't as good as from the left. He's aggressive & likes to get forward, which is probably why Binnion likes him. In general he's good at the things that you can teach, but his defensive positioning, reading of the game & decision making let him down, which will probably see him found out before we could get him to the first team

Semple is another we've got signed up. He heads & kicks everything that's in front of him, but needs it to be happening in front of him cos his lack of pace costs on two counts. 1st he can get left by anyone with pace & 2nd he frequently pulls back the fullbacks for cover limiting our attacking options

Cummings is another we should get signed up. He's a big lad and can be physical when needed, but he's another that like things happening in front of him. I've seen him at right back & up front when the strikers are misfiring, but he tends to play both of those positions like a Centre Half

Charlesworth is the one I would back to be signed up by us or picked up by others to come back & shut us out in years to come. He's probably the most consistent lad we've got & the most defensive minded fullback , he will give a solid 7+ each game. He reads the game well & can lay in some excellent crosses when he gets forward, but misses the glory cos he's the one relied on at set pieces to carry out defensive duties

Everyone knows about Ramsdale. Excellent goalkeeper & seems like a genuine lad. I just wish he'd get more game time. The lad that's coming through after him is Perryman, he's not at the same level as Ramsdale & can easily have his confidence knocked which is not good for a GK

All in all we've got 3 already signed from this group with at least 3 that should get their contracts sooner rather than later which is not bad, but in an ideal world I'd like more so that we can avoid the wage thieves that see us as a big club & come on big money and produce nothing

Thanks for the assessment Wrong side. By Binnion having favourites, I assume you mean he rates them highly?
As I'm sure nobody in such a professional capacity has 'favourites' in the sense of he thinks he's a nice lad or well mannered etc etc.

Good bit of info thanks for that.

As I said I may not see things that Binnion sees, but there are some lads that seem to get on that I can't see making it that he seems to prefer over others, which, for what ever reason puts the lads who are getting pushed forward in a vulnerable position, cos at some point their shortfalls will become apparent & they'll be let down & we miss out on lads who with a little development could be an asset

I get your drift, opinions eh! Binnion has to live or die by his opinions as do those who are judged by them. But at least it's not the end of the line for the unlucky ones..... One man's meat....
It must be difficult to judge whether a lad has reached the pinnacle of his development or there's more to come, especially as there's only a certain period to make that judgement.

Good call on the 5th of July Larky - shows a good eye when you point out the good player before anybody else has seen him play and then on his first start he does the business!

I never got past coaching Sunday League & got sacked from that!! I just get fed up when I see lads that have come through our Acadamy that we miss & then see some of the lads that we put forward that seem to fade away. I've not necessarily been a fan of Binnion's choices, I had more faith in Morgan when he had U23's, but then again, I was always a Morgan fan when he was a player

Any past youngsters that you've felt should have been given more chances (even at youth level)?

I've only been watching Kids & U23's since losing job (it's either £3 or free) but I remember watching U18's against Wendy last year away & there was at least one of our former Acadamy players who were more than competent that were playing for piglets that had been given a contract

I'm sure most people in a professional capacity do exactly that. And I worked for a large professional consultancy.
