Another manager, another mention of 'expectation'.

Nothing pisses me off more.

What do we actually 'expect'?

To not be bottom of the league after the first few games?

To be able to compete against teams with much lower crowds and therefore much lower budgets?

To actually have a go at teams? Start on the front foot? Attack?

To pin any blame on 'fan expectation' as I've argued when any manager over the last 6 years has tried to use is fucking stupid and used as an excuse when you're not doing your fucking job properly.

Before 2011 we'd spent most of our entire existence in the top 2 divisions.
All except 7 seasons.

The club is now all set to equal the 7 seasons easily.

To add to this, what annoys me is that the fans' expectations aren't out of line with what the club keeps telling us: that promotion is achievable and the ambition.

If the club don't think that's a fair expectation, then they only have to say why not.

the expectation that we could have a shot seems too much for some of them
listen lads. this is why you get paid so much to play football as professionals.. some of you aren't as good as the lads playing for the red lion in graves park, however you are expected to be able to perform in front of 20k fans. that is why you get paid more. otherwise go and get a proper job. savvi??

I'm confused. A footballer, at any level, will go out expecting to win the game. It doesn't always happen, but you don't go out expecting to draw or lose. If you do, that's bad management. It's the manager's job to instil the believe and motivation.

Fuck me, they're not playing at Anfield or Old Trafford. If they can't stand the expectation of 19k wanting them to win then they should probably go and start a farm somewhere.

I expect them to go out and give 110% every game. We're in league 1, I expect us to win most games. I expect that there will be off days and occasionally come up against a better team. We're in league 1 not the Premiership ffs.

I don't think he's blaming anything on expectation. I think he's saying that the players haven't responded to such expectation in the right manner. And who could disagree with that?
He picked em

The fans did nothing but back United either today, there was a small amount of negativity at FT but nothing in the game. I was a surprised he blamed today on not coping with fan expectation because going into the game I don't think many expected anything other than a loss.

My expectations have changed drastically over the past 10 years. These days I laugh if we lose whereas I used to get angry. If/when we win I clap, whereas before I used to go mental - If we sack the manager I shrug my shoulders and if we sign new players I think they will be the same bag of shite as the sorry lot before them.

Happy days.

To answer the OP.....the majority of fans expect us to Win every game in L1. FACT

No matter who we play, home or away, our fans expect we should win.
We are the biggest club...the most fans....the biggest budget....we should be blowing the teams away...blah blah blah!!

Rather than bleating about the manager mentioning fan expectation adding to the pressures on the players, Im sick of hearing the same crap from some fans.
It's been debated to death, but it remains a valid point he and other managers have made that the expectations of the fans increase the pressure on the players to perform and get a result. Note it's only part of the reason too...not that they at laying full blame on this.
He knows full well that our position isn't what is expected of anyone, him more than anyone I might add. He's taken blame and laid some at the players too.

But just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it isn't a valid point.
I'm pretty sure you haven't performed any role in front of thousands of people who are nervous and then on your back the minute you misplace one pass, or got out of position to the point of verbal abuse.

There's nothing wrong with wanting success, and it's mental toughness as well as skill that is needed to perform at the higher levels.
Bumming about at the bottom of the wage budget gets you what you pay for. Be like buying a formula one car and then sticking a saloon car engine in it and expecting it to win a Grand Prix. It gets you nowhere and builds false expectation.
But expecting instant results and success is what some fans are doing. And after four games...,2 poor performances 2 average...it makes those fans look idiots.

Settled side, 3 more additions (I fucking hope!) a little patience and it's a different story.
Other option is just sack him and make matters worse yet again.

Exactly my argument when some of our lamebrains start talking about taking the bad with the good

What bleeding good ?

We never get it as good as everybody else does during the so called good times
We always get it worse than everybody else during the bad

Tut , tut , tut , that's a far to sensible post , don't you know we only have to turn up to win ,
other teams are quaking in there boots when we turn up to smash them into the ground .

Both of these posts confuse expecting us to attack the opposition with 'blowing teams away'.

I've read no one talking about blowing teams away. This is made up.

Another one that confuses showing attacking intent with "blowing teams away".

The players could do worse than spending a bit of time reading through this forum. They'd see that our expectations aren't actually that high at all. It's what been down here for so long has reduced us to. Most of us would settle for a top 6 finish and signs of encouragement in terms of application and identity.

Thank God the old Pete is back.

Referring to the OP, it is actually a bit rich us expecting Sheff Utd to win every game and get promoted. We haven't the playing ability and on-field talent to do that and neither should we expect to be promoted.

For this situation, there is a common denominator over the past ten years.

Go fucking figure.

Held back as long as I could, it's the Bladesmad in me.

Fuck that. I was reading your thread and three notifications came up. "Likes" I thought, obviously :) and suddenly it went back to two.

I will find you, and I will kill you......

Global warming?

You, amongst everyone else, will slowly run out of reasons and excuses as to why we are so shit.

I can't defend it mate. I just don't let it get to me as much and try to restrict my criticisms to facts. Maybe it's my age?
I get where you are coming from and understand your passion but just feel you overstate facts which sometimes negate the argument .
I have to say since we started to debate rather than insult it's much more enjoyable and interesting. The odd dig works as well.

I'm not insulting McCabe. I just think he is now being disingenuous about the structure and capabilities of the club.

What frustrates me more is the tolerance of my fellow supporters when good players are sold and poor players are bought under the smoke screen of yet another patsy.
