Skysports.com can confirm Sheffield United's Leigh Bromby is on the brink of a move to Watford.

The Hornets have had a bid £750,000 accepted by their Championship rivals for the versatile defender.

The news comes of something of a surprise as Bromby had only recently won his place back in Bryan Robson's side after starting the season on the fringes of the first-team.

Bromby's agent Ricky Hill has confirmed the 27-year-old is in talks over a possible move to Vicarage Road.

Just gone through now..

I just hope we get a right back/centre half in now...

Yeah If we can replace him then fair enough.

To be honest despite his little good run in the side I have wanted us to get shut of him for a while.

I too thought that it was time for him to move on but i still think he is a very good centre back and if Watford play him in that position they will get great value for money.

His little good run? I'd say his poor form at the beginning of the season was the blip, not his "little good run".

And to say you've been wanting rid for a while, Robson has said many times that he only wants to ship out players if we can replace them with better ones (another failing). I could accept your comment if you agreed with this sentiment but otherwise, what a load of bollocks.

I want to get rid of James Beattie if we can sign Thierry Henry.

Ive never thought much of Bromby as a player and we were short at right back anyway as Bromby is crap at playing right back. I would say his form is more than a blip he hasnt been be any good since we got promoted. Same can be said about Tonge aswell.

Injured for pretty much the whole season though wasn't he.

To be fair to the lad, how often has he been played in his preferred position for a consistent run of games?

If you play Rio Ferdinand at right back he would be just as bad as Bromby (i'm not saying that the two players are comparable at centre back), he was professional enough to get on with it and that is a testament to the kind of guy that he is.

I've heard it all now.

Now I wasn't happy about Bromby going, because I do think he's a class player. Yes, I know he's not been having the best of seasons, but in mitigation, when you're being played out of position in a side which isn't playing well, especially as a defender when your tactics are so negative, your midfield is ineffective, and the front one (ok, sometimes two) aren't scoring, then I think you can find a few excuses. The defence is always going to be under pressure.

So he's off anyway, and we have another member of Age Concern in the squad as Ugo, and then Sornob comes up with this (paraphrased) classic on Football Heaven when asked about any possible problems at right back.

"Well it is a problem as Geary's got a knock, but we're ok for centre halves, and Del and GILLESPIE can do a job for us at full back."

What the ferk?

An out-and-out right winger is now a part-time defender. Well, I suppose Prince Mogadon's tactics have meant that he's ended up being in the middle of the park more often than not, rather than wide, but as a FULL BACK?

I'd rather Bromby had played in the middle of defence than full back, but to say Keef could 'do a job' at full back is just incredible. I know wages could be an issue, but I reckon there are others who are high earners who should have been allowed to leave as easily and quickly as Bromby.

I wish him well though, obviously.

Good luck to Bromby.

Absolutely terrible decision!

I hate Robson.

Good luck to Bromby,

Fantastic aquistion from then grunters of s6. Sad to see him go, but who can blame him for wanting to better himself.

More to the point, could someone tell me how Ugo Ehiogu (who once was a fair player) is a better bet than an established defender in our squad who's 8 years younger? It's hardly like we need an experienced head in that position, is it?

And this is the thing, he may want to better himself. Knowing his chances have been limited with us thorugh injury and others in his way, maybe it's best for him to start fresh somewhere else. However, i'm dissapointed to see him go. I can't comment on his performances as I have only been 4 times this year, but one thing that will be missed (if we have been utilising them) are his long throws. A team like Watford will benefit from those with the team they have.

All the best to him. Now, i'm not up to scratch on this type of thing, but if you're a player who has found out the club you're playing for has accepted an offer for you, surely you must feel a bit rejected and make the most of tyring for a fresh start?

He's played as a full back at international level enough times to know what it takes. I don't think he's a bad full back at all myself whenever i've seen him play there. Infact he's often been better than when on the wing.

Carney has also played full back on a number of occaisions and the match in which he almost cemented his place in the Aus national team... He totally negated Brazil, playing full back.

To be honest Foxy, Occupied Ireland v Luxembourg isn't the same as United v Day Before Thursday. In terms skill, as well as any other facet of the game.

Who the hell else is going to go down the wing (not that he's been given the opportunity to, save v Ipswich, off the top of my head) if he's stuck in a defence which constantly finds itself under pressure?

I'm not saying he can't play there, more that there's no way as long as I've got a hole in my arse that he should.

In my opinion ;)

Luxembourg have much more talent:)

but whats the point of putting players there from other positions?

Buy a replacement or dont sell him.

So robson has tried turning stretch into a midfielder and now Keef into a full time full back.

God help us if a player like martin is the opposition winger!

Let's hope Del can keep injury free for the rest of the season.

He's been great since he came back. Let's hope this latest injury is nothing.

:)

I think it's been said before? (seb I think) There is too much emphasis given to positions these days instead of creating good footballers.

Although I agree it's great to have specialists, but all players find themselves in other parts of the pitch and should be capable of a certain level of competence.

Del's a good example......he's put better crosses in recently than the wingers!

Damn right, but I can see a few sides putting us under even more pressure now, knowing we're lightweight in certain positions.

Let's face it, if you know that a side is playing a makeshift defender, who are you going to target?

When we have tactics which are as negative as we have (if we'd have been any deeper against Man City second half, we'd have been on the Upper Tier), weakening our defence can't be the way to go.

Yeah i agree they should be able to fill in,

Keef has been struggling in his specialized role, just hope he finds it easier here and dosent go drifting across to the CB position!

Had we ever played with wingers, that might might be a stronger argument :D

A certain level of competence is one thing, and I agree, but to do this on a regular basis means we have to be the Ajax of the 70's with Total Football.

Morgs on the left wing ....... hmmmm ....... :D

I know what you mean about the footballing aspect, rather than the specialist aspect, but that isn't our world, and if it's going to be, it's through the Academy.

We're in a very reactive state now, and I'm actually worried about the changes which are being made.

If we have a dodgy run, with a side who are possibly going to be in unfamiliar territory, we could have problems.

I've certainly said it. A good footballer should be able to fill in most positions. They might not be the best in the team in every position, but should be able to temporarily do a job, for example Keef filling in at RB while Geary goes on a rampage down the wing, as you point out.

Keef hasn't been at his best for a while now, and asking him to play at right back for a full game is, at the moment at least, asking for trouble. We did have a bloke who looked OK at RB the other year. What was his name? Leigh something-or-other? I'm sure he was a defender. What happened to him?

"Wednesday are not going down and we still have a real opportunity to go up."

someone needs a drink! :D:D
