I’ve got a bit of stick for using the #wildersbrexitblades over the past few days in light of us being linked with predominantly UK players since Wilders return so decided to waste a few minutes looking back over his first tenure…

Wilder joined on 12/5/2016 and left on 12/3/2021

Signings during this period, (there are some shockers here so apologies for raking up any bad memories)

Worked ok though in the main. As has been stated many times his big ticket signings were pretty poor, Oconnel and Berge apart (IMO) .Most of the players he signed for peanuts have been excellent.

So around 15%, that’s pretty high when you factor most those signings were in L1 and Champ where signing players from outside the UK and Ireland is not as common as you think. Well done Sir Chris Brexit Blades is a myth 👍

I bet there's not a single club with such a high number of British players over that period who have played mostly in the top 2 divisions..

#wildersbrexitblades is fact!

15% non British , so not entirely against foreign players ?

#wildersbrexitblades is fact!
Considering that an Ollie McBurnie costs £17 million, a Callum Robinson costs £8 million, a Rhian Brewster costs £23 million and a Dean Henderson would have cost £25 million plus.

And Moses Caicedo cost Brighton £4 million, Alexis MacAllister cost Brighton fuck all, Marc Cucurella cost Brighton £15 million. It's hardly surprising.

But being proper footballers, I suppose there'd have been a problem with them here, and for some strange reason we just wouldn't have been able to get the best out of them

Silly little piglet

I don't think it's a myth.
CW prefers signing British based players.
I don't care were he signs players from.
As long as they are successful and good value for money they can be from Timbuktu for me.
The jury is out on alot of his big money signings though.

I don't think it's just big money signings...

Even the earlier signings were a lot more misses than hits.

Thankfully the hits happened to be very very good.

I'm surprised you think Berge was a good signing for 22m+. McBurnie has done more for less money.

It's all about opinions but how much have we missed Berge this season? If McBurnie had gone at the same time I doubt we'd have missed him as much. Berge was a better player than many give him credit for.(IMO). Maybe if McBurnie had been available for selection more often he'd have been better value. I don't think he has been.

I would really have loved to see Berge play under Wilder in championship.

Hecky finally found a better position for him higher up the pitch but his cautious cautious approach limited Berge's actual impact.

Think Berge would have been a 10+ goal scorer in championship under CW.

It's reductive mythology. And what it has to do with a political union is beyond me. The only relevant seasons are the Prem seasons. At a push the Championship. Comparisons with uber expensive, state of the art scouting systems (e.g. Brentford and Brighton) are totally redundant. We don't have one.
United World have signed many non British/Irish players - how many of them have been sold for big money or gone on to make their clubs big money? Made those clubs successful? Which ones are you clamouring to be put in United's team? There's the answer to the question.

BTW: add Coulibaly to the list.

Yes, but half of Wilders time with us was either in League One or the Championship. Hardly an attractive proposition for foreign players…plus the fact we haven’t got pot to piss in.
