Evening Blades, hope you're well.

West Ham fan here - but first things first, I come in peace :)

For a bit of fun I've got a Trivia question for any knowledgeable Utd fans of a certain age.

I was listening to a board meeting at my workplace this week (they stream them for all employees).
One of the execs gave a short intro about himself... During which time he revealed he used to play for Sheffield United!
Now I was doubtful of this. It felt a strange fit.
However... he was not just making this up.
A bit of Googling and Internet digging, I found out he did indeed play for the 1st team!

From what I can make out from limited sources, he never made a league appearance.
His appearances where completely restricted to your Anglo Italian Cup run of 1994.
I am familiar with this cup having attended matches at Upton Park with my Dad, during our own stint in that cup in the 90's.

So this has strangely turned me into a bit of an anorak about Sheff Utd's '94 Anglo Italian cup campaign, and I even know all about the Udinese match were you racked up quite a few red cards!
This all a bit out the blue, but I first of all wondered if anyone here wanted to have a guess at the player in question?
For all I know his family / friends might visit these boards. Or even the player himself - i've no idea if he's a fan of the club, or from Sheffield etc.

But if anyone does get this right, i'd love to know a bit about how he got on (obviously he wasn't good enough to cut it in your first team).
So once this player has been guessed by anyone on here I'd love to be informed a bit more about his short stint at the club!

As I say, he's hardly on Google at all, so this could be a very specialist Sheff Utd subject!!

Good luck for the remaining matches of the season.

Strange seeing John Dungworth on the teamsheet...wasn't he a coach for us? Don't think he ever played?

I haven't heard of most of those. Was this cup used as a bit of chance to play the reserves?

I know it was a secondary competition, but if it happened now I'd like to think the club would give it a go when the fans have put so much money and effort in to travelling. Especially as we've famously never qualified for an actual European competition.

It'd be helpful if we'd take the Premier League seriously.

We played a lot of first teamers in the first game but after 3 of them got sent off Bassett decided to play reserve and fringe players instead.

Massimo Taibi on the bench for Piacenza - he was their first team goalie at the time...before his return to Milan and then ill fated stint at Man U.
when i recruit a wrong un at work my retort is always Sire Alex didn't get it right all the time... Massimo Taibi ...

I was going to suggest Sal Bibbo who I think only played in the Anglo-Italian cup, but a quick google suggests he’s currently the pigs goalie coach. Hope (for their benefit) that he’s a better coach than he was player.

Lewis isn't coming back, is he :(

Oh I'm coming back alright mate!! :)
And with zero negative responses about my choice of football club I may even stick around!

I didn't expect this message to be met with so many responses, a very knowledgable group.

Matthew Foreman is indeed the answer I was after (appreciate my clues may have been applicable to other players of the time).

Nicely done!

Now you've told us the answer we can slag you off! 🤣
