Decent player. Always tried his best.

Why peeps would big up Bob Booker and Glynn Hodges and leave JG out I am not sure, same kind of guy.

Not sure about the 'great player' plaudits that are being thrown JG's way. I liked the lad for his guts at sticking at something and working at his game to slowly get better and better as a player. Utd brought him in from Wimbledon if i remember right for next to nowt (bassett shrewd as ever), and the poor sod was completely out of his depth for a season or two. The reason he got the stick that he did (some of it completely unjustified) was that he could be at times unbelievably bad. There were some games when i almost prayed that he would be subbed not only to help the team but to take him off for his own good. That said, he stuck at it and he started to come good and become a decent little player. He had a great pass on him, never going to be a Currie but he definately had talent. A bit more aggression as he was a bit of a pretty boy, would have helped him though. I have fond memories of him and he would be a top player in todays team, but a great player....never in a month of sundays. If i ever meet the man i will happily buy him drinks all night...if only for that peach of a cross he put in for Sir Bobby D to score the 3rd to break their piggy hearts at Pigsborough that wet Tuesday night in 92 (i was in the lepers lane end and almost cum in my pants when that 3rd went in). God bless you Jonny G.

Good post, and good comparison.

In the wrong team, he was a passenger. Surrounded by enough players who'll pick up the slack, his attributes were useful.

Similarities with Coutts, yes.

Watch the 1990, 1991 and 1992 season videos. You'll see more assists and useful things done by Gannon - in the top 2 divisions - than Coutts and Scougall have managed between them in a similar time period.

Thinking back about the levels of abuse he got sometimes as well...i remember going in the john st west terrace early 90s and anti Gannon feeling was running high in some. Early in the game just after a Utd move broke down due to some shoddy midfield passing, some geezer starts screaming and snarling 'fuk off Gannon your a fkin disgrace u fkin wanka...just fuk off'... the poor sod wasnt even in the match day squad. Talk about whipping boy. He came good though. Good lad.

The 2-1 win against Oldham in Sept 1989. He was dropped for the 0-0 home game against Hull and he was sat a few rows in front of me in the South Stand watching the match. Bassett said he regretted dropping him and brought him back in the team after that

No, it was the Swindon game not the Oldham game.

My brother and I used to listen to games on the radio as dad hated football and despite never seeing him deliver one, we always used to get excited when he took a corner. We used to say " yes, a John Gannon specialist corner!"

Can anyone confirm if there was anything special about them?

Oh aye, agreed. Coutts usefulness has been over 10 games. We need much more for him to pay back what he's cost us, and for him to be remembered. Promotion wil be a start. :)

Scougall's a different beast. He's not really very good on the ball at all. For me, his strength is pressing the opposition off the ball. There's no comparison with Gannon to be made.

You can't compare any of the current lot with a player who served us in the top division.

I only got into following the blades in the early 90s (started being taken to games in the late 80s but was so young I had no idea what was going on) so only remember his 2nd half of his time with us really. I always thought he was OK but preferred Rogers and Hodges back then. That said, I was still very young so probably didn't have a decent appreciation for what players brought to the team. If they weren't Kelly, Whitehouse, Deane or Agana, they were nobody to me.

Bit of an enigma was JG. Lacked pace, not particularly strong, no right foot, couldn't beat a man. Early in his Blades career, he appeared afraid to put his foot on the ball, the original "Elpiton", as it were. As we progressed upwards from division 3, I think most assumed he would be out as each step was (in most peoples opinion) a step too far. We were wrong, he became an integral part of the team that waltzed from the third division to 9th in the top flight. He seemed to grow in confidence and ability the higher we went. While he was never going to be the complete midfielder, he was an integral cog in the Bassett system and every now and again was capable of pulling off the killer ball and had a very good dead ball delivery.

He was also one of the most one footed players (a real source of frustration), I have ever seen, which became more frustrating when he scored a 30 yarder at Forest with his right foot!! Probably the only time he kicked a ball with his right foot in a Blades shirt!!

Became well thought of over time and I would say that any Blade who watched him over his years at BDTBL would be happy to buy him a drink or two if they bumped into him today.

Gannon used to jog over to JOHN street west alongside Bradders before kick off. Arms aloft applauding the crowd (non of this lining up in front of the south stand bollocks). We used to applaud them both as they came over And give the Bradders 'psycho' chant but a few blokes around us used to then hurl abuse at gannon.

Gannon ruined my childhood with his shittness

Best game I've ever attended by far.
50 hardcore sat in the middle of the cantilever surrounded by blue and white
Brilliant

It was a great night, I bought a ticket outside just after kick off for that stand and as I ran in to get my seat Whitehouse must have scored but I couldn't work out what was going on as there were loads of lads on their feet celebrating all over. Talk about safety in numbers; quite happily stood up and celebrated the next two goals and the final whistle. Got a specially laid on double decker bus to the town centre after the game and remember one lad 'relieving' himself on some Pigs waiting at a pedestrian crossing. Now I've never condoned such behaviour but it was part of a memorable evening...

I recorded the RS commentary on tape that night, and i still remember Bob Jackson's comments for that goal :)

"A lovely, LOVELY pass by John Gannon"

Bobs a Blade. Gannon wasn't bad technically but only those who saw him can truly know just how slow a professional footballer can possibly be.

I thought Willie Carlin was a great midfielder. That will be of no interest though because on here, We're All Bassett Aren't We?

Rather sad really...

Crikey, I agree with you. Willie Carlin was a midfield terrier, but with plenty of guile to go with it. Could win the ball & then pick a decent pass.

Similar height to Louis Reed if I remember correctly.

Yes Nick, but everything that Willie could do is sadly lacking in Little Louis I'm afraid. You need to be a hell of a player to overcome that sort of physical disadvantage. Willie was...

Willie Carlin played in a different era, when football ability wasn't secondary to being a six foot something athlete. Other players, such as Jimmy Greaves, also wouldn't have made it in today's game.

Louis Reed is a very good footballer who admittedly is hampered by a lack of inches. His ability may or may not make up for that, but I personally think he will have a decent professional career.

Why do you hate anything that comes out of our academy?

It's the blades way. Pinch is king of this
