United managed a safe passage through to Round Four of the FA Cup after a comfortable victory in Kent and revenge for the scoreline from the defeat on opening day back in 2015! The Blades scored two in each half with a brace from youngster Osula matched by a brace from Man City loanee McAtee. United had a few scary moments from set plays/crosses but on the whole were dominant and could have had even more goals to add to the emphatic victory. The home side fought hard but were undone by some poor goalkeeping and defending which meant the goals they conceded were too easy for a Premier League outfit.

The Blades made a number of changes for the trip to the Priestfield Stadium with Seriki, Norrington Davies, Hamer, McAtee and Archer in for Baldock, Bogle, Trusty, Souza and Slimane. United started with an orthodox back four with Norrington Davies alongside Robinson with Brooks and McAtee seemingly starting wider of the midfield four with Archer and Osula up top.

Bogle was out after getting hit with a ball in the face in training and there were no places in the squad for Baldock, Trusty or Ahmedhodzic seemingly due to injuries? Gillingham named an unchanged side from their win at Colchester and would have fancied their chances of causing an upset against the struggling Blades.

The game started with Norwood overplaying a ball but Norrington Davies recovered and the first opportunity came for the Blades as Hamer broke out from midfield. His shot was blocked but it fell for Thomas but his effort was comfortable for Turner. The first real chance came for the home side as the Gills played some good football and Nadesan came inside and seemed set to get an effort on goal but Robinson made a last-ditch block,

The next spell saw United settle down after a scrappy, disjointed start and moved it around well with Brooks and Hamer often showing for the ball. On 13 minutes, the Blades took the lead. Alexander was attacking down the right for the League Two side but lost possession and United quickly broke. The ball was moved down the right and OSULA was able to make find space and after a stepover he fired a low shot that went in via the legs of Turner. The keeper should have done better but for the striker it was his first ever goal for the club!

On 16 minutes, it should have been a second after poor defending saw the home defence and keeper both almost leave it to each other and Hamer nipped in, squared to Archer but his shot hit Osula and was eventually cleared.

United had been in control but Gillingham had the ball in the net after a ball forward dropped for Jeffries who smashed a half volley high into the net but the offside flag had been raised before the excellent finish. Replays showed it was very tight. United were showing that when they went forward they were dangerous though and Brooks carried the ball a long way before exchanging passes with Archer but the youngsters finish was well off target and drifted wide. The Blades were showing their superiority and from a dangerous Hamer free kick, Robinson could not quite apply the final touch.

A rare break though saw the Gills 2 on 2 for a moment before Norrington Davies got across well to make the challenge and not long after this another whipped free kick saw Foderingham make a superb save but again the flag was up so Hawkins effort would have not counted.

Hamer was looking the player most likely to create on the field and his through ball for McAtee was put out by Ogie but soon after it was 2-0. It came again from Hamer pulling the strings and it was transferred across for Seriki and the right back hit a low drive that Turner could only push away and OSULA was there to react first and from a narrow angle he swept home. After waiting for so long for his first United goal; he now had two in a half!

Gillingham looked deflated after this but they did force a legitimate save from Foderingham when from the same source, an in swinging free kick, Hawkins won it again and the Blades keeper has to push away.

Osula then nearly had his hat trick as Archer’s break and deflected shot fell to him but on the stretch he fired over. Two minutes of stoppage time were played out with no further chances and it was a relatively comfortable lead for the Blades – a rarity away from home!

The 2nd half began with Brooks making a couple of early enterprising runs but ran out of space but home side won a few corners and the height of Hawkins continued to cause problems and he had a header down and wide after once again getting the better of Robinson. Hamer cut inside and hit an effort that curled not far wide.

The home team made two changes on the hour as Clarke and Nicholls came on for Nadesan and Alexander. Thomas’ ball found Archer and he came inside and it eventually fell for McAtee but he fired over. McAtee was becoming increasingly involved in the game and another good run led to a corner and from this, Osula flicked back and Archer hit an effort over the bar.

McAtee was proving hard to stop and his surging run took him away from two men and it fell for Archer whose fierce shot was beaten away from Turner.

Gillingham had not really offered much outside of set plays but had an appeal for a handball that clearly hit Thomas in the face. Nicholls was in on goal but used his hand after a flick on from Hawkins threatened to put him clear. United made their first changes as Brewster and Brereton Diaz came on for Archer and Osula with the latter getting a good hand for his two-goal salvo.

The home side then had a really good spell and will have been disappointed not to get a goal back as indecision from Robinson and Norwood saw the ball not cleared and Nicholls shot was deflected wide with many in the ground thinking it had gone the other side. The home side came even closer soon after just after Souza replaced Brooks. A ball was swung in and Ehmer got the jump on the sub-Souza and his flicked header hit the post and bounced across the line and somehow stayed out.

At the other end Brewster was suddenly in but Turner came out and narrowed the angle to make the save with the shot being too close to the goalkeeper. The game was effectively decided in the 82nd minute though. Norwood’s ball should have been cut out but Malone and Ogie left it to each other and MCATEE was able to receive it, beating the offside trap and cleverly clipping in.

Dieng, Lapslie and Bond came on for Hawkins, Mahoney and Jeffries for the Gills and Osborn replaced Norrington Davies as the game was now up as it entered the final 5 minutes. Brewster had done well on a couple of occasions and he had a shot deflected wide after holding off a defender again. From the short corner, the ball was played to MCATEE who came inside and hit a tremendous swerving and viscous shot that arrowed into the far corner giving Turner no chance and putting the cap on a really pleasing afternoon for Chris Wilders men. Lapslie fired over soon after the kick off and then Brereton Diaz was slipped in as United had men over on the break but he chose to shot, rather than pass and Turner made the save. United were still on the attack as only one minute of additional time was played before the final whistle came.

For the Blades it was their first away victory of the season and ensured they were into the hat for the next round on Monday evening.

United – For once we were the team with an easy win and looked a class above an opponent that were well beaten. It was a routine and comfortable win. I felt that we were never really in any danger of not going through and even though they had a few chances and once again we struggled with set plays/crosses, we scored four and could have had a few more. We did what we had to do against a poor side and the gap in quality for once was hugely in our favour. We started with a few sloppy passes but then started to take over and Brooks/Hamer were showing quality in the middle and with the pace of Archer/Osula, you sensed we would get chances. The first was well taken but came from them losing the ball and reminded me of some of the goals we have conceded this season where teams break! Osula took it well and was very much like some of the goals he has scored at u21 level with a step over and drilled finish. The keeper should have done better though. After this they had a few set plays but more poor keeping saw Osula on the spot to get the second and he nearly had another. We looked comfortable in possession and Hamer stood out as the cleverest and most technical player on the pitch.

After the break, we had chances through Hamer, Archer and McAtee to put it away but could not quite get the third despite dominating the ball, they then had a flurry of chances and one deflected wide and then the header off the post was unlucky. After that missed then you felt that was it and so it proved as McAtee gets a third due to bad defending and then scores a beauty. Brewster and Brereton Diaz both had one on ones too and so in the end 0-4 was about right. Maybe they (and the big lad) deserved a consolation for their efforts but United cruised to the win. We did make a fair few changes and the defence was quite unfamiliar and we lacked height again which again could have cost us but we moved it around well and ensure the crowd were not able to get involved. Osula finally gets a few goals and he did well first half and then after Brooks and Hamer had been the stand outs first half, McAtee was superb after the break and scored two and was involved in everything good that we did.

We did what we had to and avoided the upset that some may have seen was a possibility due to our form. We now have two weeks before we play again (over 2 weeks) and we will probably see more coming into the club and some going out (surprised Thomas and Coulibaly played but probably showed how thin we are for numbers with injuries and those at the AFCON too). Pleased for those who travel most weeks to get a victory on the road as it’s been miserable of course for the regulars who keep going away from home.

Ratings:

Foderingham 7/10 – Had little to do really but what he did, he dealt with well. He pushed a header away with a superb save that was offside but then saved a decent one not long after this. Second half they had a few other chances that were deflected wide or came off the post and not sure he made many saves. Noticeable we did not play it back as much (trickier pitch or new instructions?). Rare clean sheet and first away from home for a long time.

Seriki 6/10 – Did ok first half with some decent touches and defended ok. He also had the shot that led to the second goal. He was fine but then after the break felt he was not as secure in his touches and passing and got caught a few times and tired somewhat. Did ok though.

Thomas 6/10 – Fine really. He was not put under lots of pressure but was able to get his foot in a few times and was ok in possession. Had one low shot early but we did not see much of him going forward. Few times he did sit off which led to crosses coming in. Hopefully with RND back he will go back now.

Norrington Davies 6.5/10 –Really pleased to see him back and he did well in a centre back position where we ended up with two left sided players in the middle! A few excellent pieces of covering early on saw him snuff out the threats offered and he used his body well. Recall him always reading the game well and he showed that today. Second half he continued to tidy up when he had to but then lost Nicholls once when he came on.

Robinson 6/10 – Odd game as he did well with lots of things in general play and came out, some neat touches and turns and used it quite well but struggled with the big lad aerially and lost several headers that led to chances for them and they really could/should have at least got one. Hawkins really caused him problems at times though but he had little help aerially.

Brooks 6.5/10 – Thought he was good first half with some neat touches, good runs and he was always available. He carried it on well and got us up the field. Looked athletic and showed good mobility with his running. One shot was wide when he could have done better and a few times maybe no end product – this carried on second half as he made a few good runs but then sort of lost it when well placed. He tired a bit and came off for Souza. Looked a cut above some of the League Two players which shows the difference in standards.

Norwood 4/10 – I thought he was our poorest player and even his assist was not a great ball! Constantly gave it away and often under no pressure. He is meant to be the experienced head that keeps the ball but he took too many touches or telegraphed his passes. Thought he was the one player who I was disappointed with and this is becoming a theme really. I would be looking for another midfielder in January as much as the discussion is rightly being on goalkeepers as Norwood really should not be playing nor should Fleck, Osborn or Coulibaly at the Premier League level.

Hamer 7/10 – He was good today. He sort of flitted in and out of the game and I felt he was better first half than second half and he was the one who always wanted to get on it and play forward passes. Many of our good moments came from his carries or passes with the ball. Looked composed and very elegant when on the ball. Had the curling shot wide second half and then McAtee sort of took over and we saw less of him.

McAtee 8/10 – First half a bit frustrating with his touches and decisions not always coming off even though he was an outlet and thought he came inside too much and got crowded out. After the break he was best player on the pitch by a long way and completely dominated them. He ran at them time after time and they had no answer. Had 4 or 5 great runs which led to chances for him or others and we easily could have scored from his good play, long before he did. He took his first well but the second is an unbelievably good strike. Showed the difference in levels with his ball control, close control and ability to carry the ball that they had no answer for. He has to be more involved in terms of getting him on the ball in future games, especially at Bramall Lane.

Archer 5.5/10 – Bits and pieces he did ok but at times he made poor decisions too. He linked well with others and always on the shoulder but he fluffed one shot early on when Hamer set him up and then blazed another two over when well placed. He did keep going though and was able to provide that runner when we did break. His finishing was poor though – one decent shot saved but 3 or 4 other fairly decent chances he squandered.

Osula 7.5/10 – Two goals and both well taken. He loves that step over to give himself space and fired home well and the second he did well to react. Pleased he has got a few goals as he has worked hard in difficult circumstances in the Premier League this season. He could have had a third too. Tired after the break as he often does and did not really look like getting his hat trick.

Subs –

Brewster 6.5/10 – Played quite well today when he came on, looking strong and determined. Held it up well and brought others into play. He did miss one really good chance but he was able to show some aggression and forward running which led to other chances. His shot led to the corner for the fourth.

Brereton Diaz 5/10 – Operated wide down the left. Not the best of debuts albeit in limited minutes. Early on he gave it away and then most of the rest of the final stages we attacked down the other wide with McAtee. He had one excellent chance near the end but shot at the keeper – cross might have been the better option? Looked a bit rusty but has not played much of course.

Souza – On for the final 10 minutes or so. Lost one challenge and then his man outjumped him for the one off the post. He ended up at centre back with the dearth of players available in this position.

Osborn – Got the final few minutes as the game was won.

Manager: Wilder 7.5/10 – A 4-0 win and with changes made to go through so easily has to be pleasing for Wilder. We had some players who had not played or in different positions and the defence and side lacked height but we did what we had to. Overall, it was a good win and a clean sheet with four goals so no real negatives at all. He will be pleased for Osula to get two especially with Brereton Diaz coming in and adding competition and his new signing got some time too. Will now use another fortnight trying to work on things at Shirecliffe and hopefully getting a few more signings in. I have been a bit perplexed by the loan/s we are signing/supposedly signing as it seems short term when our absolute priority had to be next season unless these short-term signings are going to be major impact players that give us a chance of getting the unlikely wins we need. That is just my opinion and some will say we have to be more competitive but does signing BBD really change things that much – a better option than Traore maybe but I personally would rather we save the funds (even with Traore out – effective swap) or use them for a player who will be here next season.

Gillingham- Poor side who were well beaten. They made some horrific goalkeeping and defensive mistakes and for most of the game gave us loads of time on the ball. I though they would be more in our face and press us but other than that spell for 5 minutes 2nd half at 0-2, where they had those few chances, they did not really do that. It was quite easy for us to score and easy to get through them. We had numerous chances and this was as much due to them just being very naïve in getting too high up the field or leaving themselves too open. The lad up front caused problems and they did have some chances due to the height advantage but overall, they were well beaten and lacked quality and experience to properly even have a chance of the upset.

Opponent Man of the Match – Hawkins. Constant handful. He won so many headers and unlucky not to get a goal.

Opponent Weak link – The defence made some mistakes and the lad Ogie looked out of his depth at times but the keeper was really poor. Turner made some good saves second half but his errors (both goals for me) effectively sealed the game.

Referee/Officials – Darren Bond we saw make a poor decision at Hillsborough in the week (a red card that has since been rescinded) but today it was a much easier game. He is a referee that seems to like to get involved. Not sure there was a bad tackle (was there even so much a tackle!) all game and the two yellows (Thomas timewasting – we were 2-0 up and not sure it was that sort of game and the one on Coleman for a pull on Brewster) were soft too. The rest of the game passed without incident really.

Interesting score for Norwood there Deaders. I can see you getting grief for that but personally, I think you're spot on. He played like Gillingham were beneath him as it was Hollywood pass, fancy flick, one thing after another as he tried to be the star. He showed for the ball a lot but sometimes, the short, simple pass is the answer and not the 'look at me' ball.

He gave the ball away constantly from the stupid early flick to several other balls misplaced or short. He made two errors that led to the chance when the shot deflected wide. He slowed it right down whenever he had it. He did assist the third but that was a poor ball too.

Absolutely spot on with norwoods score. He was static throughout the game, and aside from a few Hollywood passes he was ineffective.

Thought Thomas' score was generous. Against poor opposition, he looked ok. Made a lot of poor passes and bad decisions. 99% he simply passed backwards. Back to Leicester please asap...

Whereas thought rnd showed real class on several occasions.

To be honest, think your being kind to Norwood, and very kind to Archer, both need a big mirror to look at themselves in!

Archer is an odd one. He was signed to be a finisher and an outlet player but not sure he's great at either. He had a few good games when Wilder came in but has dropped off again. Not sure him being moved around helps but weirdly he looked better at times out wide (Brentford/Liverpool). He has been ok but another signing that not sure has quite lived up to some of the hype (Souza, Hamer you could put in the same category sadly). We needed more thank ok performances.

As soon as he goes back to Villa, they will loan him out again. To another Champ side again. He's had numerous loans now and whilst still only 22, not sure I see enough football awareness/intelligence or strength/sheer pace that says he is quite up to the top level. Yet. No shame in that. He might just be a good Champ player. Certainly don't think Villa are ever getting anywhere near the fee (admittedly we will get back) we supposedly paid if/when they do sell. A Prem club wont sign him and a Champ club would not go over 7 or 8 million I would not think. Didn't we pay double that?

I agree he was dreadful today
Looks shot now ,it's one thing losing pace and athleticism but I think the amount t of times he just gave the ball away under no real pressure looked the worst player on the pitch which given the level is a damning verdict on him
Can't remember last time he had a good game

Nitpicking here, as a great report as ever, and much appreciated, but can you have a swerving shot that also arrows into the corner?

One or t'other surely? :)

It was viscous..a thick ,gloopy liquid of a shot, probably something akin to either treacle, or Sunday morning porridge....no wonder it went in.

Totally agree, I'm hoping now Osula has a boost in confidence and Diaz has arrived, he eather ups his game, or gets to be a sub until he realises what he needs to do.

I'd be interested to see his heat map, as I'm sure it'd be a red dot both halves

Whilst in full agreement he's done, find the pile on uncomfortable given how much he's achieved with us.

Does it need an injury before we can show some appreciation?

Should be noted that after the 2020/21 relegation season, lots of people thought he was done too, and he bounced back to have two good championship seasons.

He's just not a premier league player. The fault lies with the managers for not recognising that.

I think everyone appreciates him in terms of his legacy & effort at the club. I think the issue is with him quickly ruining it. Hopefully he gets knocked down in the pecking order and Arblaster and Davies will severely limit his chances.

Seriki did well for about 70 minutes. After that he seemed to get in trouble on almost every occasion.

Wilder said Bogle was going to play, so Seriki was maybe thrown into it a bit, maybe not been too much a part of the specific preparations.

In such a situation I think it is reasonable to assume he was instructed to keep it simple and avoid taking too many risks. Seriki was more conservative on the ball than he is for the U21s. He did go forward and made several off the ball runs both on the inside and outside of McAtee, and only misplaced two passes the first 70 minutes. Of course he played a part in the second goal. Wilder said he was pleased with him, although I think he was a bit subdued and is capable of more, especially driving runs on the ball.

Not sure what made him sort of switch off for the last part of the game, but overall it was a better performance than his debut. Hopefully he can build on it, either with minutes here and there, or another loan spell.

He's been brilliant for us. As was Fleck, Stevens but I think his time is up. Those two ended up staying a season too long too.

You can thank players for an outstanding contribution but also I am assessing today's game and his contribution rather than assessing what he's done over the course if his United career where he has been one of the best midfielders we have ever had.

Today he really struggled again. This was versus a league two side.

Norwood was garbage, slowed our game right down and his only successful passes seemed to be back passes or sideways. Maybe a bit generous for Wes who did make a few decent stops, but that is what he is good at. At one point in the second half he refused to come to the edge of the box for a routine pick up leaving our defence screaming at him for putting them under unnecessary pressure, something that seems to happen every game now this dithering when he should take command of situations.

We can't progress as a squad , no matter which league we're in next season , if we are still playing Norwood - he's yesterday's hero but no longer viable.
Archer has probably realised he's back at Villa next season so his motivation is limited.

You'd think we might have learned our lesson after Brewster !

Bang on again Deadbat. Can't see what's all the fuss is about him. Ordinary at best..

Robinson was head and shoulders lower than Hawkins but was the only one available to mark him. He was great otherwise. We so need to get our Aerial defence sorted this Window, goalie , defender or both.
