Sunderland RCA are very pleased to announce the signing of Chris Armstrong. Martin Swales has jumped at the chance to bring in the vastly experienced ex-professional footballer at Reading, Sheffield United, Oldham and Bury.

He started his career at Bury, playing 33 games and scoring 1 goal before being transferred to Oldham Athletic where he played a further 75 games, he was signed by Sheffield United and made his debut in the first game of the 2003–04 season.

Chris then suffered a serious injury which limited him to just 13 games in his first season with the Blades and ruled him out for the whole of 2004–05. After a brief spell at Blackpool to improve his match fitness earlier in the season, he was a regular starter over the next two seasons before a suffering a number of injuries which kept him sidelined

Chris then moved to Reading and made his debut for the Royals in the 4–2 home win over Crystal Palace on 30 August 2008. Since then, he has become a first team regular and scored his first league goal for Reading against Watford on 9 January 2009. He was voted Player of the Season for the 2008/09 season with 80% of the votes.

Chris announced his retirement from the professional game on 8 March 2011 and revealed that he had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in December 2009.

Currently, Chris is looking to get back into football as a coach but is willing to pull on his boots to help SRCA in any way he can.

I was wondering how Chris was doing and I managed to find this article from January.

Great to see him back in Football despite his illness, I wish he was still playing for us.

Good luck to the lad he fully deserves it.

Always had a soft spot for Stretch and I couldn't believe after the heartache he suffered through injury at our place that he has then had to deal with his illness. The manner to which he didn't want to collect a paycheque to retire and instead try regain his fitness, really did make me like the guy. Stay strong Chris, I really wish him the best of luck.

Once a blade, always a blade!

For a short lad he could jump as well. Did he not fill in at CB once or twice (when Morgs decided that issues had to be settled, for example?)

Good luck Stretch.

If ever a moment in football best described a player; on his debut (forgot who it was against) and within his first five minutes he ran full pelt to the byline to close down a player who had a few yards on him to deliver a free cross and went straight through the ball, man and smashed himself straight into the advertisement boards at the BL end. Straight up off the ground and carried on. Brilliant player, brilliant attitude and wish him well whatever he does.

One of my mates went to school with him. Apparently he's a thoroughly nice guy.

he also fell out with Warnock over the last goal vs Villa in the Premier League season and says James Beattie's party trick is fitting inside a washing machine.

True story.

I struggle to think of many better left backs in my time watching United. Best of luck to him.

Excellent. Absolutely marvellous. I remember seeing him when he was really suffering from his illness, he could barely move. Remarkable recovery. Go on Chris lad

Good on him. I re-watched the 1-0 Premier League win against Arsenal recently, and Armstrong was exceptionally good in that game. I'd always remembered him purely as a battler, but had forgotten quite how good a footballer he was.

My wife has Multiple Sclerosis and there has been big news in sheffield today. Her specialist Prof. Sharrak has made a breakthrough in treatment. Using good stored stem cells from the patient he uses chemotherapy to kill their immune system then puts the good stored cells back and it grows a new immune system!

See 10 o'clock news tonight. Women goes from wheelchair to chasing her daughter down the hospital corridor.

Chris is probabley Young enough to benefit from treatment in next few years.
