Scoring four in the league

Strangely 85 and 86 wasn't a great season either
We started off slow but had that purple patch in Oct-Nov which took us to 2nd. We then promptly lost 4 in a row in Dec, followed by indifferent form which led to Porterfields sacking in March after we lost 5-2 at home to Norwich.

I believe we were 6th at the time and Portefield quite validly pointed out we were in Division 4 when he took over, so being on the fringe of the Division 2 promotion race after 4 and a bit years wasn't that bad.

We ended up 7th , which was our highest position since relegation from Division 1 in 1976.

Was the last time we won 4-0 against Fulham, when they'd already been promoted as champions?

If so, what was the last time we won 4-0 against a team that was actually trying.

Against Wimbledon in February 2017?

I reckon the last 4 games of 2016-17

Port Vale A 3-0
Bradford H 3-0
MK Don's A 3-0
Chesterfield H 3-2
What makes that run all the more impressive back in 2017 is we were already up by then and the players were regularly going out for drinks.

We were a bit ridiculously better than the rest of the league at that time.

Not sure that's true. From memory we were keeping it professional up till the Chesterfield game. They were bottom and already relegated. We were top and already Champions and we made it a close game. But the win did, eventually, get us 100 points.

If it was Wimbledon in 2017, I've just watched the highlights and don't remember a thing about the game - but someone in the comments pointed out it was James Hanson's debut, and he got a goal and an assist.

We signed him after we lost at home to Fleetwood 2-0 and didn't get a look in all game.

Hanson gave us the "over" option and we didn't lose another game all season. Maybe some parallels (though obviously at a different level) with Bamford.

I was wondering earlier if I could remember us ever being so good and so bad, in the same seaon, as we've been this time around. The spell in that 85-86 was fabulous, champagne football. The 3-0 away at Portsmouth was the pinnacle. They were top of the league at he time.

I guess the Bassett, top flight houdini seasons would also be a candidate, particularly the first one.

Portsmouth had won 8 out of 8 home games without conceding a goal!

When Porterfield was our manager we improved our league position pretty significantly in every season he was in charge.

As you say, we were on the fringe of the promotion places when he left, which was significantly better than battling relegation the season before.

If the playoffs had been in place we would have been in promotion contention, but finishing sixth meant your season might be over by March and fans got frustrated.

Up to Christmas we were fantastic then Dads Army just ran out of steam . Went to Pompey for that game to ⚔️

We started well, beating unbeaten in the first 4, but then lost 4-0 at eventual champions Norwich. We then only 1 out of the next 6 before winning 1-0 at Grimsby, then hitting that purple patch. After beating Portsmouth our record was:

P18 W9 D6 L3 pts 33

It was downhill from there...

2nd tier I think oct-nov 85-86

Barnsley H 3-1
Bradford A 4-1
Hull H 3-1
Oldham A 5-1

We then scored 3 in the next 2 games but one was a draw

Blackburn H 3-3
Portsmouth A 3-0

I still get annoyed when i see mention of that 3-3 draw against Blackburn at the Lane (played in thick fog). Steve Wigley had scored that wonder goal where he took it round all the Blackburn players, down the back of Bramall Lane, down to London Road, then round all the shoppers on the moor, before back on the pitch and then rolling it in the net.

In the last minute, John Burridge then decided to allow a soft as shit shot roll up to him, before picking it up and chucking it over his own shoulder to allow them to grab an undeserved draw. Miffed, doesnt even come into it. I should perhaps let it go after 40 years, but feck me it was annoying.

Generally speaking, i liked JB as a Blades keeper (though he was crap with high balls in the box) but i do look back now and wonder if he had a bet on the draw... it was almost too obvious a feck up.

For some strange reason I can remember a lot matches from that season when it was hardly a classic ?

You're in good company, I've heard my Dad moan about that one more than once decades after the event.

You're misremembering that a bit. It was about 15 mins from the end and it was a speculative shot from ex Wednesday player John Lowey from about 35 yards. It came to Burridge about shoulder level and it slipped through his hands and into the net.

As I recall, it was a wet and windy day and that probably had a lot to do with it. A bad mistake, yes, but the badness has grown on you over 40 years :-)
