Why does Ramsdale do his wanky little jump before diving? Seems to wrong foot him every time and he dives backwards into the net. Any GKs out there please tell me there’s some method behind it

It's the correct technique, he's just not very good at it.
The idea is that it gives you momentum that a standing start would not, more spring in the tip toes enabling you to dive more quickly.

His trigger movement seems to take him away from the ball e.g the Man City goal.

I also don’t like his positioning on set pieces. First goal today case in point.

You aim vaguely for the corner and it’s in.

A very poor signing, who I suspect will not be first choice in a years time.

I’m a gk coach at step 4 non league and use to play step 3 non legaue up until two year ago.

It acts as a trigger movement like triggers when batting in cricket. Watch a lot of goalkeepers around the world and you will see it. from mind, De Gea and Neuer have a big trigger jump.

I try and stop the lads I coach having a huge one, just need a small set and ready. Not a big bound and set. Just gets your feet ready to spring and helps you not have planted weight on the balls of your feet and helps the springing motion.

Well you could do worse than learn from the likes of De Gea and Neuer!

Not in favour of it myself. I was always coached to concentrate my balance more towards my toes and I found that helped my spring.

Ramsdale needs resting, he’s panicking more and more each game. He is scared to death to make any decision and his confidence is taking a hit every week. Wilder has to see it, it’s time to try one of the other keepers as we can’t be any worse than we are.
I've said this on other threads, he needs dropping for his own good. If we've bought him for the future then we need to protect him for now and get him out of the firing line.

I'm yet to see one good performance in 20 games. He's a bag of nerves and can't catch a ball.

Poor old Egan has got zero confidence in Ramsdale
In every game, you can see Ramsdale call for the ball and move towards it but a defender will clear instead when he could have left it. It happened 2 or 3 times today.

The defence do not trust him at all.

I am certain of this because I play in goal and my defence don’t trust me so I know this behaviour when I see it...

Think it’s just how the positions has evolved. We got told this was an “optimum” move on my coaching course and was encouraged to coach this method

For me it was always getting the footwork right in order to be set before making a save.

Ramsdale does neither. His footwork is all over the place and his arms are never set they’re always flapping about everywhere.

Not a fan of how he dives from a standing start either it means he has to dive upwards to get down which means he’s getting nowhere near shots that should be pretty routine.

For me goalkeeping is a lot about anticipation. I’ve not played to any great level but I have done a lot of specialised training when I was younger. Any one can makes saves but being able to get into the right positions makes it a hell of a lot easier. For as long as I can remember it was drilled into me that I could see everything on the field and should have bred that into my defenders with confidence.

Ramsdale isn’t displaying many of these qualities at all atm, unfortunately.

Then again I have said before he’s clearly lacking confidence and so are his defenders in him.

ive always been a rammy fan but he needs taking out now his confidence is shot to pieces give fodderingham or verrips a go

How has focus turned to bashing Rammer's?

I accept he was a little bit all over shop but I don't think he did anything to warrant a slaughtering today.
Just them two off top of my head. But you can see in these videos they have a jump to set them save

50secs onwards you can see a conscious effort the jump set catch and save from neuer and the other goalie in fact from 1:30min he’s working on the set technique from the floor,

After that display the excuse of “he needs a clean sheet to give him confidence“ followed by a mistimed looping kick straight to the edge of his own D after 50 seconds makes me smell BS. I mentioned that it wasn’t just Bogle at fault for the first and sure if he gets his head on that it never goes towards the goal. But watching it back there is a movement that Ramsdale makes towards the ball, before realising he will not be able to effect the flight ultimately leaving him back peddling with his arms out stretched and in no mans land. If he doesn’t come off his line and trust his defender to make contact he saves it.

His general decision making and positional play is not that of someone who costs over 15 million.
