Premier league: keep our fans in for the 2nd half by changing the points system

So I was having a few nasty flashbacks to some of those early early 1st half mass exodus from games last year and started thinking.. could anything be done to prevent that from happening if we go up again? This idea came to me and I may as well float it, though obviously it's not going to actually happen.

There's nothing worse than a game that feels done and dusted by half time, crap for the trailing team and it's not even that much fun for the winning team fans watching their team go through the motions in the 2nd half after going 3 up in the 1st half. How could the points allocation of football be tweaked to keep fans as entertained and engaged for as much of the 90 minutes as possible?

Obviously everyone hates change so I'll be pleasantly surprised if even one person admits this idea has some merit:
We do away with the basic 3pts for a win, 1pt for a draw 0 pts for a loss system and replace it with something new and a touch more complicated.

In this new version you accumulate points both in the 1st half and 2nd half. By the end of the game you could get 5 or 6 or 7 points for winning depending on the manner of victory, 2 points for drawing, and either 1, 0 or even -1 pts for losing depending on the manner of loss.

Win the 1st half: +2pts
Win the 2nd half: +2pts
Match Winner: +3 pts
Draw the 1st half: +1pts
Draw the 2nd half: +1pts
Overall Tie: 0 pts
Lose 1st half: 0 pts
Lose 2nd half: 0 pts
Overall Loser: -1 pts

So you could be losing the first half 4-0, but if you manage to win the second half 1-0 then you still manage to claim 1pt.
In this scenario the winner of the game would pick up 5pts. (2pts from winning the 1st half + 3 bonus points for winning the game).

Losing both halves results in -1pt (0 1st half + 0 2nd half -1 for losing the game). In which case the winner takes 7pts. (2pts 1st half + 2pts 2nd half, + 3pts for winning the game).
Drawing 1st half and winning 2nd half would earn you 6pts. (1pt+2pts+3pts). Losing 1st half and drawing 2nd half results in 0 pts (0+1pt-

This version of points allocation would ensure it's always worth watching the 2nd half and have something to play for, even if it's just to get 0pts instead of -1pt.
It also means that the team winning 4-0 at half time still has an incentive to attack in the 2nd half rather than simply park the bus.

Does anyone else here get weird ideas like this??? 🤣
I still fail to see how you get 1 point as described in the first sentence if U lose first half 4-0 it's ,0 points if U win second half 1-0 U get 2 points yet U state U would get 1 point how does this work in that scenario? I've just noticed the overall loser -1 point so I understand it now

Did the Yanks put you up to this?!

I presume their would also be points for the quality of the cheerleaders dancing, how many cardboard clackers or giant pointy sponge fingers are waved at once and for the volume of the organ music played every time the ball goes out of play or the game is stopped for an injury……..or you could just go and watch (insert any random American sport here) 😡

I don't think this is it, for one key issue. A team could, theoretically, set up to absolutely batter the opposition in the first half, attain an unassailable lead, switch off for the 2nd half, and earn 5 points (Win 1st half/Overall match winner). While the opponent in that match has to work their backsides off in the first half, only to get slapped around, then scramble their way to a slender win in the 2nd half, and they only get 1 point, while arguably having put in much more effort across the match than the "winning" side.
Whilst I would never want to see the suggested system implemented as I think it's ridiculous....

Just to play devil's advocate, why would the first team not try and also win the 2nd half for an extra 2 points? Their rivals will be going for maximum points in their games so why would they slack off and accept 5 points when they could have 7?

Only when I've had a pipe full of that exotic baccy😁.
Nothing wrong with innovation.👍

Not so much devils advocate more common sense😄

Hmmm, imagine trying to work out what you need to do on the final day to stay up! Hans Segars would be all over the place.

My revolutionary idea to try and inject a bit of competition into the Premier League is simple: promoted sides are immune from relegation for a season, to enable them to consolidate. So it’s the three worst established sides who go down. But get this: the relegated sides aren’t able to be promoted first time round, encouraging a healthy churn of clubs into the top flight, plus generating income for the Championship as “big” teams are forced to wallow in the second tier for at least a couple of seasons.

I can see literally no flaws in this plan, other than it being the only way Wednesday could feasibly expect to get to the Premier League again.

If pigs ever got onto pl, it would be 3000 points for a 0-0

I wouldn't go that far, esp denying being promoted again.. that could financially cripple clubs. Maybe just give newly promoted teams a bonus 5 or 6pts at the start of the season? That would lead to some nail biting finishes!

I'd prefer to adopt the NHL system. If a game ends as a draw then they play one extra period of overtime. If a team scores during that period then the game ends and they get the 3 points. The other team still gets a point for taking it to overtime. It then goes to penalties if no one scores in overtime with the same points awarded when someone wins. Even then they play the overtime with less players to make it easier to score, so in football this could be reduced to one 15 minute period of 8 aside.

Good effort typing all that out. It's a really bad idea, but good effort... 😁

Easy. Lose the first half 1-0 so oppo gets some points to overtake 3rd place. Then win second half 2-0 to take the 5 points to go up champions.
I think.

Yeah it' was more about the in game experience than trying to change the league positions too much.
Cheerleaders firing t shirts into the crowd and a jumbotron with a kiss cam where you have to kiss your next door neighbour in the 2nd half would sort it.

I seriously believe your following the wrong sport.
Have you tried Shinty, maybe Tiddly Winks or that old perennial, a good shag, does it for me, sure you'd find it helps, clear your head.

He’s a pipe smoker?

Not for me.

But for a long time I have advocated a 3 “point” carding system as 2 yellows in the one game (often with at least 1 of them being soft) is not grounds for a dismissal. IMO.
