A few names here who I think could be good signings for us, and it wouldn't surprise me if many of these are also on Wilder's list.

Add your own suggestions/possible targets to the thread.

* Appear to have 6 months left on contract

Defenders/wing backs:

Byron Webster (CB) - Already a known target, very solid L1 centre half who is apparently keen to join us, Millwall have had time to line up replacements.

*Craig Morgan (CB) - Another previous target, another experienced CB who'd be ideal in the middle of our back three. Been back in Wigan's team recently but might still be available.

Kevin Long (CB) - We were linked with him too. Did well in L1 with Barnsley last season. Knows Lafferty from Burnley, will be available.

*Aaron Pierre (CB) - Athletic young left sided CB at Wycombe. Not quite what we need most but could be worth signing for what would be a reduced fee.

Tendayi Darikwa (RWB) - Nowhere near Burnley's team. Will be on a decent wage, but maybe we could get him on loan. He's been in this area and in L1 previously with Chesterfield. Good athlete who'd give us a real boost down the right hand side.

*David Wotherspoon (RWB/RM/CM) - St Johnstone utility player with good individual ability, we were linked when he was at Hibs. Scored plenty last season, has a good delivery on him and takes set pieces. RWB in our team would suit him.

*Conor McLaughlin (RWB) - We were linked in the summer. He impressed for NI at the Euros and can also play in midfield. Likely target with 6 months left on his contract.

Paul Caddis (RWB) - Out of favour at Birmingham, whether that'll change now after Rowett's inexplicable sacking I don't know. Proven RWB, would improve us.

George Baldock (RWB) - Looked good against us, good on the ball and quick. Wilder said as much but also criticised his play acting.

*Joe Bunney (LWB) - Converted by Keith Hill from striker to LB/LWB, like a reverse Matt Done! So could also give us another option up front. We've been linked, maybe there's something in it.

Midfielders:

*Yaser Kasim (CM) - Classy midfielder who'd be great competition for Fleck and Coutts. Low fee possible. One who could possibly step up to the Championship.

*Louis Thompson (CM) Young Norwich midfielder who's done well in L1 with Swindon, and captained them. Looks like a good all rounder.

*Jamie Allen (CM) - 21 years old, Rochdale's captain and has played a lot of games for them in recent years. Quite highly rated, could be worth a bid.

Elliott Bennett (RWB/RM) - Not a regular at Blackburn, but is a proven wide player who can cross a ball. Decent athlete and a well balanced player. Would be excellent for us at RWB.

Emyr Huws (CM/AMC) - We seem quite strongly linked, will obviously be available. Left footed playmaker who can score goals. Warnock could do us a favour.

*Graham Carey (AMC/LM) - Probably the best player in L2 for the last two seasons. Scores, assists, takes set pieces, has a great left foot. Would be quality competition for Duffy. 6 months on contract but could still be hard to sign.

*Ben Reeves (AMC) - Been a good player for MK Dons for a while in the number 10 position. Decent ball carrier with end product. Good left foot. Would be quite hard to sign though I'd imagine.

Martin Samuelsen (AMC/LW) - Extremely skillful player. Not sure West Ham would loan us anybody though. Possible replacement for Chapman but would expect to start regularly.

*Lloyd Isgrove (RM/LM/AMC) - Southampton winger who was at Barnsley last season. Tricky, tidy and intelligent player. Another possible replacement for Chapman.

Forwards:

Ched Evans - We should sign him if at all possible, as a priority. Could be incredible value.

Omar Bogle - Surely out of reach now but we've been interested for a while and could try our best to get him.

*Jon Obika - Good all round forward, athletic, skillful, a good provider and can score himself.

John Akinde - Powerful forward with a great scoring record in recent years.

Eoin Doyle - Not a regular for Preston, done well in L1 previously and doesn't seem to have deteriorated.

*Conor McAleny - Did well for Wigan on loan, scored a good goal against us. Can also play wide. Has been at Everton a long time so they must see something in him.

James Vaughan - Quality L1 striker if he stays fit.

*Tom Elliott - Target man at Wimbledon. Looks like a handful, and has scored a few. Could be a bargain if we want that sort of option.

Martyn Waghorn - Looks likely to leave Rangers. Left footed, versatile and hardworking. You won't find a more direct upgrade on Done. Not sure he'd be prolific either though.

"...James Vaughan - Quality L1 striker if he stays fit...."

I was actually going to start a thread about him earlier today, 4th best scorer in our League and in a team that is hovering above the drop zone.......

would only take out of them
emyr huws
jon obika (always liked him)
byron webster (would be good and would weaken milwall)
another one i would add to the list is luke perry (striker at cambridge, scored quite a lot of goals for them in last few weeks.

Kasim would be a great buy too, though not sure he would want to come and play second fiddle to Coutts & Fleck.

Kasim is quality. Surprised he's still at Swindon.

What about someone from Bolton? Be reyt funny to take Clough or Spearing etc.

Gary Madine is looking quality lately. Fuckin hate him too

Any more for any more !

As has been said elsewhere, a cheeky bid for a couple of Bolton's and Scunny's better players could help to upset the apple cart, but I draw the line at that Twat Madine!!!!

Cameron McGeehan at Luton could be a good goal scoring midfield option which being honest we don't truly have, though the price would be £500k at least.

Only seen him once and from regulars it was far from his best game, but he was pacey and linked up well with the strikers and with a 1 in 3 goal ratio he is very promising. I'm aware that Wilder was due to watch Luton not long since, and while I've no idea who was on his radar I wouldn't be surprised if it was this fella.

Would've thought Webster will probably be the target if EEL is recalled as he seems the most direct replacement.

Morgan is a good shout as he would provide that experience and leadership in the middle of the 2 younger CB's especially if JW is going to pick up niggles all season. We don't look half as solid without him there.

I'm not sure we'll see any CM's arrive as Basham can fill in there if anything happens to either Fleck or Coutts.

Replacement needed for Chapman as we don't really have any other game changers on the bench.

Also as much as an upgrade on Done ie someone who does the same work as him but scores as well would be great we've all seen what happened when he was dropped recently. With Bolton and Scunny looking as strong as they are i would be mindful of dropping points trying other strikers.

Wilder will know all about McGeehan from L2 and I'm pretty sure he'll like him. He's an all rounder and a regular goalscorer. In addition to that he's got a good attitude - he made sure he went and got regular first team football when he could've easily stayed in the U21s at Norwich. Clearly cares about playing football more than anything else. That also means he'd be hard to sign though, because he wouldn't go anywhere he wasn't going to play regularly. And I think he has Championship interest. And Norwich have a big sell on clause which will inflate the fee. It does look like he's out of contract though, surprisingly.

Think this article says a fair bit about him.

A really good, comprehensive and thought provoking list Ricky.

From those you mention, my personal choices, based on who I feel would improve the team/squad most and are most likely to be within Utd's reach (i.e. not Champ bound), would be Bunney, Webster, Hughes (loan) and Evans. I'd also add Ariyibi to the list who I feel would definitely be an upgrade on Freeman (& Brayford), although he may well have admirers in the Champ (e.g. Brentford).

It will be interesting to see how much is made available from the Board and how many deals Bettis, Schieber and Mitchell can get over the line.

Jan will also be a good opportunity to try to shift a number who are unlikely to be close to the first team inc. Long, Wilson, Reed and McNulty (if he's not going to stay at Bradford). I'd also release Brown and be tempted to replace Lafferty who hasn't convinced me he's good enough yet.

Bradley Dack still at Gillingham...

Very doubtful Utd would be willing/able to pay his asking price (£2m the last I heard). Whilst he's undoubtedly a talent, I doubt he fits CW's requirement for hardworking players willing to high-press teams.

S64 also makes a very good point so it's a no from me as well!

While I think he would be out of reach (too much left on his contract, from memory) Marcus Maddison at Peterborough has a good blend of goals and assists.

Byron Webster if EEL returns to Wolves, Ched or Matty Taylor for more competition up top & somebody with skill & pace, someone like Ariyibi or Ismail from Bury.

I was talking to a Gillingham fan the other week and he was of the opinion that Dack's stock had fallen and he had started to believe the hype. He felt they would be lucky to get anywhere near a million for him

I would like us to go after Aaron Pierre if we don't get EEL. In fact, even if we do we need another centre half as Jake Wright won't go on forever as good as he has been and Pierre is very highly rated down there. Made the team of the season last season and wouldn't cost more than a few hundred grand, you would imagine.

As for Dack, I think its a touch of what happened to us with Michael Brown after his amazing season and then no move. He went for £750,000 the following January having looked a shadow of himself , in comparison to his penultimate season.

I would go for Big Dave from S6 . Not everybody cup of tea , but could do a job at BDTBL. Many a true word .

I'd rather Clarke to be honest and Nuihu is still featuring for them lot, so I doubt he would be allowed to leave. He also can't finish, even with his head he is wasteful. Its a no from me. Would rather us sign Ched every day of the week.

As others have hinted, we need another CB in addition to EEL (or whoever replaces him). We need to have one eye on next season and JW is not a Championship player. Interesting, incidentally that Byron Webster isn't in the Millwall squad at the moment. Injured?

Freeman is a revelation this season. He's as good an athlete as any of those suggested as upgrades upon him. I think he could even cope at the next level. No change required there.

Definitely need another striker to compete with Sharp, Clarke and Lavery. The latter is going to play an important part from now on.

Agree, in fact I always thought Freeman was unfairly singled out in the past as well, always seemed a decent player to me, but I guess we all view things differently. Along with Billy and the midfield three, Freeman would be one of the first names on the team sheet for me.

Hi there,

This is my first post after reading the forum for a while. I think we could do a lot worse than having a look at Matt Smith from Fulham. Seems to be crowded out by the likes of Chris Martin, Lucas Piazon etc there and has a track record of delivering at this level. We seem to put a lot of crosses into the box with very little end product. This guy is an absolute beast in the air and I feel he would get on the end of a lot. Also played with Billy at Leeds so will know each others games pretty well.

I for one, as the oracle of footballing wisdom that I am, have been championing his signing for some time.

Bloody hell, 6ft 6 tall, he would not even have to jump! Just stand in the box, watch the ball come in, stick his head forward!

I used to play with him at Manchester Uni..I'm 6"5 and used to play in goal...he is literally the best header of a ball i've ever seen. He could outjump me easily (admittedly not hard). He is useful on the deck and has real intelligence. I don't think he'll be on extortionate amounts of money either. Worth a shout IMO.
