Given the fact I usually live 7,000 miles form S2 it’s fair to say my attendance has had to drop to part time level. I was probably around a 30 game per season guy despite living in London. But Bryan Robson’s tenure coincided with a job opportunity in the Far East and the lure of Bramall Lane was sufficiently weakened to make the move.

It was with great delight that in a mini trip home I’ve managed to attend a few matches and indoctrinate my 13 year old daughter to United.

She always liked Billy Sharp when we watched United on tv but she hadn’t seen them in the flesh. QPR at home hardly hooked he in what was a frustrating 0-0 draw. Her interest was peaked at the weekend as, like many, we watched ITV worh my Dad and cousin and saw us easily beat our rivals.

So I asked if she fancied watching a mid week game under the lights and she gave the nod.

So hot chocolate in hand we took our seats. The dozy devil managed to leave her coat in the car and the chap next to use was quick to offer her his coat. A £270 Stone Island one to be fair to him. My daughter was trying to explain to me she was tapping her feet at the time rather than shivering but within ten minutes she was grateful of the gesture; a nice introduction to the warm heartedness of Sheffield folk.

She has her first chance to jump up for a life goal in person when Sydie finally took the monkey off his back.

Half time came and a change of costs saw her take my jacket me warm myself with the hot chocolate which was, I assume 10% chocolate, 90% molten lava.

Plenty to keep warm as United turned the screw. Another great header from the excellent Tanganga and Bamford made his mark after a first half effort which looked like a golfer who’d chosen the wrong club.

Some eminently sensible subs allowed Hamer and Burrows to enter the fray. Hamer then with a wonderful hit that we were right behind in the BLUT; it’s really an excellent view up there. That’s twice I’ve sat there in a fortnight having only sat there once in 40+ years.

Futher rotation had seen Riedewald, Cannon and Seriki rested and useful minutes given to Soumaré, Ings and McGuinness.

Ings once more was unlucky not to get off the mark. He’s a clever player. Hope for his sake he notches soon.

All in all, despite a slightly disjointed start, it was almost a perfect follow up to Sunday.

We can go to Leicester with some hope that the worst is behind us and whilst we take one game at a time, you could feel the belief growing into the team already.

My daughter is now asking me when the next match is so we can squeeze some more in before we head back in December.

Mission accomplished on more than one front today!

Feeble excuse. Very poor. You need to have a long hard look at yourself, young man... 😏

Daughters are a horrendous expense Champers. I still suffer from one who suddenly took an interest in’t Blades late on at 15. You just wait till she starts on with the request for Singapore/CathayPacific/Emirates Business Class return for a midweek game. It all starts with “Dad, can I just………

Absolutely awesome. So glad the team delivered for you both.

The BLUT is a great place for observing patterns of play I find.Great for young uns if they want to understand the game and see how teams counter each other.
We ought to give our fans choice of a season ticket up there.
My grandad had one in the previous version and it left it's mark on me.
Great to hear she's keen to be a Blade Champers🙏

What age is a good age to introduce a nipper to Bramall Lane? I'll be at the game on the 20th Dec.

My daughter is 4, but given we live on a sparsely populated Scottish island, she doesn't know what crowds are, she doesn't like loud noises, and I highly doubt she would sit through two hours without moaning at me.

Plus, she only likes us when we're wearing the purple kit

I love reading stuff like this. Thanks for sharing!

Whereabouts are you guys living, BTW?
Cheers mate. We’re usually found in Singapore mate. You do miss weird stuff like mint aeros, monster munch crisps, and cold weather not to mention trips to the Lane. It was certainly a rude awakening the first week we got back here when we went from 30 degrees to minus figures!

I first took my lad when he was 4 - it was bloody nightmare when he needed the bog and we were sat on the Kop and he pissed himself on the trek up hill and down dale to get to them, luckily it was the home cup game against Brighton a couple of years ago so it was quiet but I'm not sure a 3rd round Cup tie is worth the trip from Scotland!

All about getting them accustomed to it as best you can, he used to moan at me about people shouting and making too much noise but I took him to Wembley and he loved it and has been to ice hockey and rugby since.

Maybe try a panto out or something like that and see how she goes on.

Fantastic! A life of misery and disappointment (in a purely footballing sense) is now assured. Your job as a Blades Dad has started, but it won’t be complete until your daughter has witnessed (in person) a relegation day, a lost play off final, a lost FA cup semi. I completed that with my 17 year old in May.

My daughters first game at the age of 4 was port Vale away. I had 2 hours of when is mister blobby coming back on.
Even though she is now 33 and done well for herself I always tell her my proudest moment was at the age of 5 she shouted offside and a section of john street started singing na na she's a blade.

I reckon if you already know she doesn't like loud noises, its probably best to wait. My eldest is the same and I just can imagine a goal going in and roar of the crowd making her cry her eyes out whilst I just want to be jumping around.

I took mine to a womens game, that was a really good experience for them and (I think) it has worked in terms of getting them involved with the club.

Also cheaper tickets mean if she gets bored, don't feel quite so bad about just leaving.

First time I took my daughter around 20 odd years ago aged about 7 she said she didn’t want to go again as it was too loud. ‘That’s the end of that’ I thought. Roll on ten years or so and she became addicted in league 1. Last year she didn’t renew her season ticket due to work but even at 29 she still goes when she can including trying to add to the 40 odd away grounds she’s been to. What I will say is enjoy the experience because I loved taking her and still do. Have you thought about the fluffy ear defenders plenty of young kids wear?

t's not just the noise, I just think that may people would freak her out.

I’d say 7 or 8 at the earliest. Before that, it will annoy both of you, as others have pointed out. If you’re desperate before that, you could try a pre-season friendly, where you won’t be so bothered if you have to keep going to the toilet or leave early. Better to wait a bit and let her enjoy it properly on her own terms.

He’s really going to thank you for that post in a few years! 🤣

United women playing on the 21st Dec with not nearly so many people. Tickets are on a deal at the minute too so worth having a look
