Just having a neb at When Saturday Comes and noticed this article from a Forest fan written prior to their derby last night with Notts County... speaking about their almost friendly rivalry with their city neighbours but more fractious relationship with other clubs - us among them.

Obviously there's the animosity due to the whole Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire mining thing but why name us and not Wednesday? Is it because we've played them more?

Article is here anyway: http://www.wsc.co.uk/content/view/7483/38/

...From a Forest perspective, despite literally being our closest rivals, County are probably fourth or fifth down on the list of enemies. Derby are at the top, then there’s Leicester, because they seem to dislike us so much, then Sheffield United because of a few very spicy encounters in the late 1990s and early 2000s....

>Is it because we've played them more?
probably 'cos we hammered them in 'that' playoff semi?

Forest have been so far in advance of County for so long that I don't think the rivalry is there. It's a bit like us and Rotherham.

The last time we played Forest I heard a kid, who could only have been about six years old, shouting "Scab!" whilst his dad looked on with pride.

The kid could not have had a clue about the Miners' Strike, so why do we perpetuate such nonsense?

I blame the parents...

I have a couple of mates that are Forest season ticket holders and to be honest on the whole they don't really class us as rivals either. Obviously Derby and Leicester are their main hates while they have a strange, almost ambivalent relationship with Notts County. Odd as it sounds I think Notts County used to be classed as the "County" side where as Forest are the "City" side.

It does wind them up seriously if you refer to them as Notts Forest :D

They insist on Nottingham Forest, Notts County is the name for the others. If you must abbreviate then Nottm Forest.

I work in Nottingham, and with quite a few staunch Forest fans and their big, and maybe only rivals are Derby County.

The one thing i don't like about the whole Sheffield/Nottinghamshire thing, is the use of the word Scabs when describing the Forest fans. There was still quite a lot of NUM members in the Nottinghamshire area during the miners strike, and most of the Forests i work with find it as an insult, as they are the sort of blokes who wouldn't cross a picket a line, and would be more than likely be the ones manning the picket lines.

With regards the Forest fans, when i talk football with them, a lot of them have a lot of respect for Sheffield United due to the games we had, and the fact that whenever the clubs meet each other it is usually a good atmosphere and both teams are usually up for it.

I'll be honest i never used to like or respect for Forest, but having worked with a lot of their fan, as a club i have a lot of respect for them, as they are a proper club, with proper supporters.

Thats because the City Ground is actually over the bridge in West Bridgford and comes under Rushcliffe Borough Council whereas Meadow Lane is on the Nottingham side of the river and is within Nottingham City Council boundaries

Thats a bit odd, as a lot of the people i work with call Nottingham Forest 'Forest' and Notts County as 'Notts'. Not sure why but it strikes me as being a bit odd.

I hate Leeds far more than I hate Wednesday; I don't even 'hate' wednesday that much.

Yep, that's what they called em when I lived in the third bit of Nottingham belonging to Gedling Borough Council.

Nottingham really is a confused city

I blame the parents...[/QUOTE.] Yes and that Hitler had some good ideas ,a scab is a scab for life and his kids are the kids of a scab

I hate Leeds far more than I hate Wednesday;

Same here. I wonder if being away from the day to day rivalry doesnt have something to do with that? I imagine Id feel differently if Id gone to school with a load of smug Grunters*.

I think many Blades who have lived outside the area for a while don't feel the same hatred of the filth as those of us who have to mingle with them daily and read/hear their delusional bile in t'local media. It's understandable.

I lived in Nottingham for a time and went to both clubs' home games on odd occasions and would agree that there no real mutual rivalry. County fans hate Forest but accept that is not mutual: Derby are the no. 1 enemy for Forest, who tend to behave in a rather patronising fashion towards County more than anything else.

Erm I have heard you describe Forest as scabs many a time.

I think there is rivalry and hate. Personally I'd say that Wednesday falls into a rivalry camp where as I have more hate towards the teams like Cardiff and Newcastle who would come to the Lane with that "do you know who we are Ref, you don't need to discapline us - we can get away with anything" attitude.

Leeds too would fall into this category for me, but only just - as I have family who are from Leeds.

As for Nottingham Forest, I think of them as rivals and the games are usually competative. But in terms of nasty fans and intimidation I'd say Cardiff, Wolves and Millwall all have something about them that effects an atmosphere inside and outside the ground IMHO. Barnsley fans who even now leave the Lane talking about Thatcher do make me chuckle too!

Mate of mine who's a Forest fan laughs at the suggestion of County being their rivals, they have a pre-season 'friendly' against them almost every year. Derby on the other hand...

I like to see Forest as rivals, probably because of recent games (particularly THAT play-off)
