Is it just me thats worried about the following things said after the match at mansfield?

"We got what it says on the tin - a very competative workout against decent opposition. It is far better to have meaningful features such as this rather than thumping far inferior opposition about 10 - 0."

Decent opposition no disrespect to mansfield town, but come on i wouldnt call a non league club decent opposition. We should be looking to dominate teams like this even in friendly's. There is no excuse!
Plus dont come witht this thumping far inferior teams 10-0 i cant remember the last time we gave a team a good beating. We'd be lucky to get 10 past middlewood rovers under 10s.

I havent come on to be a blackwell knocker, but that comment has left me woundering what goes through the blokes head.
I was going to go yesterday but had other things come up, plus £12 to go watch a superstar team like mansfield, i personally thought was a bit steep!
I dont expect for the manager to come out and slate his players, but at least he could have done was come out and said i expect more from my players and it wasnt good enough, because it really isnt.
Come on blackwell we are not F***ing stupid so dont come out with comments like that!

It's a pre-season friendly, and the first one as well. It's all about getting the lads fit for the season. Let's give them a couple of matches to find the rythm. When playing with 2 teams, one for each half, and a couple of youngsters in the mix, the result is not what matters most. A few years back the Norwegian champion lost all their pre-season friendlies, but when the league started they had eliminated mistakes and found the rythm they were looking for.

He's just being honest.
A game against Mansfield with our jumble sale set of nomarks is a tough game for us.
It won't be long before we're being urged for patience to let the new players settle in or for mention of use of the loan window.

In our promotion season, weren't we losing to what were more or less Cornish pub teams? Thean the season started and we won 10 out of the first 11 matches.

the result does bother me yes because i think we should be making teams like mansfield (even in friendlys) look like what they are, non league clubs!
But what worries me more is the spin and bullsh*t that blackwell comes out with, yesterday shouldnt have been a test at all it should have been a warm up game where our players should be showing us what they have got to offer for the new season. These mansfield players are playing for next to nothing, not 5 - 10k a week at least. Yet there making us look amateur and then blackwell comes out and makes it sound like we have played barcelona.
no we havent Sheffield united played mansfield town a non league club with players that play infront of a couple of hundered people a week.
like i have said it does bother me but i dont want him out you have got to give him a chance in the league games, but just come out and say it like it is, it wasnt good enough, it wasnt fair to the fans who payed £12 a ticket plus petrol and other cost, and we didnt play a big club ffs!

It was completely fair, we got what we turned up for, a typical pre-season game!

The results mean nothing, it's the other benefits such as trying things/players out and gaining fitness in a competitive situation.

Beating every side put in front of us in recent years has done little to effect our league form.

well iv never gone to a match with expectations of united not winning and im sorry if i expect players (that will be expected to make us have a good go at promotion) to beat a set of non league players.

also i dont earn a great wage so sorry if expect a bit more for the money i spend, if i had gone yesterday which i was until i had family matters to sort i wouldnt be happy with spending £12 and not even seeing us score a goal! thats not taking into account food, drink, petrol etc.

Then it's probably a good job you didn't go, as you would have felt a bit short changed.

Sadly, with football, you pay to watch 90 minutes of happenings, not guarenteed goals/wins.

I'm not having a go at you in the slightest, I'm just saying, if you expect us to batter any team "below" us and put together instantly accomplished performances with half a team full of unknowns that haven't played together before, then I'd definately hold off from pre-season friendlies as you are likely to feel short changed!

i get where you coming from, but where not talking about a team thats below us in our league or even the football league, it was Mansfield town and im sorry unknows or not the players on that field yesterday should be good enough to get a result!

"Blackwell quote's! "

Why do people put apostrophes into plural words? Drives me mad.

It's not exactly rocket science.

[If in doubt, leave it out!]

Probably best you don't go to pre-season friendlies at all. I stopped years ago. The result means nothing (quite rightly), its all about the players getting a bit of match time under their belt and trying out a few new players.
For the fans it should be about seeing mates you've not seen for a couple of months, having a few pints, a bit of banter and a match you can enjoy because it doesn't matter whether we win or lose.
Newcastle lost 6-1 to Leyton Orient last season. Didn't do them any harm.

I think referring to Mansfield as "a non league club with players that play infront of a couple of hundered people a week" is a bit steep. Their average attendance last season was 3206, 4th in the league.

Friendlies are just an opportunity to give the players a bit of a run out before the serious stuff starts in August. They mean very little result wise, although it's always better to win of course. It's a chance to try out new players and new partnerships. The team in the 2nd half were completely different to the one in the 1st (apart from one player) and none of them were the side that will run out against Cardiff in a few weeks time.

Don;t get too downhearted, but don;t get too excited either. What matters is where we are at the end of the season, not at the end of the friendlies.

I can see why some people were annoyed and worried after the Mansfield game yes it was the first friendly but we should be able to turn out a side to beat them or at least score a goal. I went to watch united against sheffield fc in a friendly last season we won 4-3 and sheffield fc were the better side, people said after that its just a friendly then look at the season we had last year. Still waiting for that game where we outplay a team for 90 minutes. It took us 45 league games to get going last season hope its not the same this.

The season we got promoted people said exactly the same stuff about that pre-season.

I'm more concerned about our recruitment efforts than our style on the pitch just now...

We toured China during that pre-season. Warnock sulked about missing out on Cornwall.
